SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Another migrant caravan has reportedly formed and is making its way through Mexico, according to Pedro Rios, the director of the American Friends Service Committee. Rios said the group has more than 2,600 people and is picking up more along the way. Like past caravans, it is fleeing violence from countries of violence, and Rios believes many will likely try to reach the U.S. border to make an asylum plea. “It includes not only Central Americans from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua, but also Cubans and people from Venezuela and various African countries,” Rios said. “There is definitely a lot of families, in fact, they’re moving at the pace of families.” Rios said networks of humanitarian and human rights groups are watching the caravan. The group entered Southern Mexico and is headed towards Mexico City. From there, the caravan could decided to head up towards the Tijuana, San Diego portion of the border, or head towards Texas. 10News reached out Customs and Border Protection officials after hours Tuesday, asking if they are aware of the caravan and what preparations they are taking.  Las Vegas is getting set to host the first major event since the 1 October shooting.The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and Half Marathon has 40,000 runners registered for Sunday's races.As one of the rare events that shuts down the Las Vegas Strip, security concerns are heightened this year in light of the recent tragedy."Up until the shooting I honestly didn't even think about security as an issue and as soon as that happened, I was a little nervous," said Tom Sullivan, who will be running his first marathon.Captain Andy Walsh with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is in charge of security this year.He says marathon safety really changed after the Boston Marathon bombing in 2014, and 1 October changed it again."We've added some counter-sniper surveillance posts along the route," Walsh said. "We're going to have coverage from our helicopter unit."He added there will be 350 officers on the ground plus several large vehicles like dump trucks and buses to act as makeshift barriers.Some runners say crossing the finish line has become even more imperative now than ever."Just because this may be harder or scarier, it's not going to stop me," Sullivan said.Esther Reincke is dedicating her run to Cameron Robinson, who died in October's shooting.Robinson was her co-worker and running buddy."I can run now and Cameron can't," Reincke said. "That's really moving for me, to have somebody that was so young and so full of life and really just getting his life going."Before the race Sunday, 58 white cross memorials will be moved from the 'Welcome to Las Vegas' sign to a museum.If you are heading down to the marathon, there will be some road closures to keep in mind. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Candidates, who are looking to unseat Congressman Duncan Hunter, are feeling emboldened as his trial grows near. This week, the Congressman’s wife took a plea deal with prosecutors, in which she has agreed to testify against her husband in the trial scheduled for Sept. 16. Several candidates had already made plans to run in 2020 against before prosecutors flipped his wife, and they are now watching to see what unfolds in court. Many of the candidates have begun fundraising efforts, and some say donations to their campaign have ramped up in the past few days. Many currently vying for the District 50 seat are Republicans within Hunter’s party, like El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells who ran against Hunter in 2018. “I think my chances are now even better, I lot of people know me more,” Wells said. “A lot of people, they wanted to vote for me last time but felt conflicted about the Duncan Hunter situation.” Temecula council member Matt Rahn, who is also eyeing Hunter’s seat, expects to gain some of his followers as the trial goes on. “I expect to see some change in the folks that are showing interest as we see this case evolve and unfold but right now, we have a solid base,” Rahn said. A conviction won’t remove Hunter from office. It will take a two-thirds House vote to do that. However, if he survives the trial, there's likely going to be some political fallout. That gives Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar confidence he can turn the district blue. “I think people are going to be willing to put country over party and look past the 'D' next to my name. No one has invested more in the running of this race to represent everybody, than our campaign,” Campa-Najjar said. 10News reached out to Republican Larry Wilske.
