SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Millions of Americans are uninsured during the coronavirus pandemic, with more at risk of losing their jobs and in turn losing their healthcare coverage.A 17-year-old boy in Lancaster was reportedly denied treatment at an urgent care clinic there and instead told to go to a hospital. On the way to the hospital, he went into cardiac arrest, according to Mayor R. Rex Parris in a video posted to YouTube.RELATED: Reports of alleged child abuse drop in San Diego since school closuresParris said when the teen got to the hospital he was revived, but died hours later. The teen tested positive for COVID-19, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is still evaluating his case, so he has been removed from the Los Angeles County death toll for now."Once you go into respiratory issues, you have trouble breathing, you're short of breath and you have a fever," said Parris. "That is the time to get medical treatment without delay."RELATED: App helps users locate where essential items are in stockThat is the problem for the millions of uninsured Americans. Although testing for COVID-19 may be free, treatment is not.10News asked health officials at a San Diego County press conference about what's being done to reassure uninsured San Diegans that they won't be turned away like the 17-year-old in Lancaster."In general if individuals do not have insurance, there is the county's phone number, or they can call 211. That's probably the easiest thing to do, is call 211," said San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten.RELATED: Unemployment benefits could take weeksWe asked if someone would be turned away if they tried to get help at an urgent care clinic with COVID-19 symptoms, but did not have insurance."When somebody presents to a specific facility for care and it's not emergent there is usually a process for them to determine whether that is an appropriate place for them to be cared for," explained Dr. Eric McDonald, the Medical Director for the County Epidemiology and Immunization Branch. "For example if it's an insurance related thing and they don't have insurance for that facility, they may be asked to go to another facility, the good news is in San Diego we have a very good mechanism through 211 for individuals who don't have insurance to be able to access clinics where they will be accepted for care."RELATED: California Gov. Newsom says 5 banks to waive mortgage feesRight now Covered California is providing a special enrollment period because of the coronavirus.Uninsured, eligible Californians can apply for free or low cost health insurance coverage through the end of June. You can apply online here. 2679

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hundreds showed up for a prayer vigil Wednesday night, organized by the Broadway Heights Community Council. The Prayer Vigil for Love, Peace and Justice was outdoors on Martin Luther King Jr. Way. A dozen faith leaders participated, each taking a moment to speak to the crowd and then share prayer with the crowd. Organizers say they put this together in response to the racial injustice around the country, mentioning the death of George Floyd and the arrest of Amaurie Johnson at the trolley station in La Mesa. The vigil was peaceful and organizers say that was the goal. Families that attended the event and faith leaders say they are hopeful that coming together will lead to meaningful change and healing. 740

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Less than a week before the election, there are reports of political yard signs being stolen and vandalized, and in some cases, appearing in yards.Sunday night, just before midnight in a cul-de-sac in El Cajon, surveillance video shows a car driving slowly before it stops to let someone out."A shadowy figure, looks young, maybe 10 years old, gets out of the vehicle, runs in, and grabs a political sign," said Brandon Spaulding.Spaulding says the sign being taken belonged to his neighbor and it read "Trump/Pence, Make America Great Again." That same night, Spaulding's sign, which had been vandalized days before, also disappeared. The apparent thieves in the Sunday's thefts: a child and an adult."Very disappointed and frustrated ... being a terrible role model. As parents, you’re supposed to teach children the different between right and wrong. I was always taught to love my country, and part of that is freedom of speech. Respect people's rights to say what they want to say," said Spaulding.Spaulding isn't alone. Local Republican Party officials say they've received more than a 100 reports of stolen Trump signs, a greater number when compared to previous presidential elections. In Coronado, police responded Wednesday to seven homes, where yard signs reading "Racism Lives Here" appeared in front of the homes of Trump supporters who were displaying signs or flags. It isn't just Trump backers being targeted. On the Nextdoor mobile app, ABC 10News found numerous examples of signs supporting presidential challenger Joe Biden stolen.Just south of Balboa Ave., Margo Thomas woke up Wednesday to her Biden/Harris yard sign gone."To me, it just feels like you’re stifling free speech," said Thomas. There is still no mistaking who Thomas is backing. A "California for Biden" sign still stands in her yard.In El Cajon, Spaudling immediately purchased new Trump signs for his yard and for two neighbors.ABC 10News reached out to the local Democratic Party officials for theft numbers and are waiting to hear back.Campaign sign theft does qualify as misdemeanor petty theft, which carries with it a maximum penalty of six months in jail. 2171
