NAIROBI, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- The East Africa Community (EAC) and the Chinese government held talks on Wednesday to explore new areas of cooperation and boost trade between both sides.A statement from the EAC Secretariat said China's Ministry of Commerce Director Department of West Asian and African Affairs Chai Zhijing held discussions with Secretary General of the East African Community Juma Mwapachu on bilateral cooperation. "The Chinese delegation were at the EAC Headquarters to explore areas of cooperation specifically trade and investment opportunities in areas such as agriculture, animal-husbandry, production and processing of mineral and other natural resources, manufacturing, commerce and logistics, and tourism," the statement said.It noted that the delegation wants to know how China could support and facilitate cross-border infrastructure projects such as transport, communication and power.The Chinese and EAC officials also discussed cooperation in human resource development and training.Speaking during the meeting, Mwapachu said the visit by the director will open further the cooperation space between China and the EAC.He said the prevalence of Chinese firms in the region was very high in the construction industry and some other infrastructural developments.He noted that Chinese companies were involved in the construction of the EAC Arusha-Namanga-Athi River Road projectThe EAC secretary general said the regional economic bloc, which comprises Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi, was truly looking forward to forging a lasting relationship with China.Chai said China has very good economic and cultural relations with all the five partner states of the East African Community and that all the five states were enjoying economic stability.He said EAC had a reputable framework for integration and development for the region, adding that "these form the solid basis for establishing cooperation with the People's Republic of China."The two sides agreed to come up with a concrete framework for engaging each other in the identified areas of cooperation, within one month.

NAIROBI, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Although exact details surrounding the situation are not known at this time, there are indications that the fishing vessel TAI JUAN 227 from China's Taiwan has been released from pirate control, the EU anti piracy mission said on Friday.The vessel, which had a crew of 28 at the time of the attack, was pirated on May 6, 2010 while operating 700 Nm North East of Seychelles.EU Naval Force spokesman Paddy O'Kennedy said in a statement that although direct contact with the crew has not been possible, the vessel's owners apparently received a call from the master stating that they had been released but that they did not know why.According to the EU naval force, the crew were provided with fresh food and water by a U.S. warship after the release. The vessel is currently heading away from Somalia.The naval spokesman also said that there is confusion surrounding the details of the release as, until three days ago, the FV TAI YUAN 227 was suspected as being used as a pirate mothership.The Gulf of Aden, a body of water between Somalia and Yemen, is the main sea route between Europe and Asia.Tankers carrying Middle East oil through the Suez Canal must pass first through the Gulf of Aden. BEIJING, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture on Wednesday urged more measures be taken to minimize the impact of a drought due to the possibility that the winter drought may continue into spring.The country's winter wheat producing regions have suffered severe drought since October last year, and the possibility of spring drought is surfacing, Minister of Agriculture Han Changfu said in a statement posted on the ministry's website.Spring drought following the winter one will be a significant threat to summer grain production, he said.As of Wednesday, the drought had affected about 115.95 million mu (7.73 million hectares) of winter wheat in the country's eight key producing provinces, which account for 42.4 percent of the total winter wheat growing areas in the regions, the statement said.China's main wheat growing regions include the provinces of Shandong, Henan, Hubei, Anhui, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu and Jiangsu.Han urged agricultural authorities to be "fully aware of the extreme significance" of a summer harvest this year and strengthen their efforts to assure a successful harvest.Summer grain and oil production is crucial to easing inflation pressures and stabilizing grain output for the entire year, he said.
