STOCKHOLM – Greta Thunberg showed support for Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden in a rare political tweet Saturday. The 17-year-old environmental activist wrote that she doesn’t usually engage in party politics, but the upcoming U.S. election “is above and beyond that.”“From a climate perspective it’s very far from enough and many of you of course supported other candidates. But, I mean…you know…damn!” wrote Thunberg. “Just get organized and get everyone to vote #Biden.”In the same tweet, Thunberg shared an editorial piece from Scientific American that says, “choosing Donald Trump for president is choosing fiction over fact – a fatal mistake.” In September, the publication broke with its 175-year tradition of not endorsing presidential candidates and backed Biden.Thunberg has become a face of the movement to combat climate change.Thunberg has also been criticized by Trump in the past. When the activist was named Time’s Person of the Year in 2019, the president mocked her, saying she needed to “work on her anger management problem, then go to a good old-fashioned movie with a friend.”Trump has publicly dismissed the science on climate change. Last month, he said “I don’t think science knows” what it’s talking about regarding global warming and the resulting worsening of wildfires, hurricanes and other natural disasters. 1355

State legislators will vote Monday on an emergency bill to block evictions across California when a moratorium expires on Sept. 1.The bill would extend the moratorium protections for tenants through January 2021, but evictions could resume in February. This bill, called the COVID-19 Tenant Relief Act of 2020, does two major things to protect tenants:1) It converts unpaid rent from March 1 to Aug. 31 to civil debt, meaning a tenant cannot be evicted for nonpayment. Instead, that person can ultimately be taken to small claims court.2) It prevents eviction of tenants who pay at least 25 percent of their rent from Sept. 1. to Jan 31, 2021. If a tenant pays at least 25 percent, the rest would be converted to civil debt. Otherwise, a landlord can begin eviction proceedings Feb. 1, 2021.Governor Gavin Newsom announced he would sign the bill once it reaches his desk. The Southern California Rental Housing Association expressed major concerns about the legislation, saying it does not protect against financial ruin for landlords. In a statement, it said the bill doesn't provide rental income assistance and does not guarantee landlords will ever get the money they are owed. The bill requires a two-thirds vote, and is expected to be taken up in both houses of the state legislature Monday. 1302

Texas Democrat Beto O'Rourke is trailing in the polls in his race to unseat Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, but his effort is raising an unprecedented amount of money.O'Rourke's Senate campaign announced Friday a record-smashing third quarter fundraising haul of .1 million. It's the most ever raised in a quarter by a US Senate campaign.O'Rourke's campaign has obliterated fundraising records throughout the race, even as polls have consistently shown Cruz with a comfortable lead in the high-profile Senate contest. Last quarter, O'Rourke made headlines with what was then a record-breaking haul of .4 million.Cruz's campaign had an impressive third quarter itself, raising in million between July and the end of September. Neither campaign has yet announced their cash-on-hand total at the end of the third quarter, though O'Rourke led Cruz by over million at the end of the second quarter. The O'Rourke campaign, which has rejected PAC money, announced that the .1 million haul was "powered by 802,836 individual contributions," and said that the "majority of the fundraising c[ame] from Texas.""The people of Texas in all 254 counties are proving that when we reject PACs and come together not as Republicans or Democrats but as Texans and Americans, there's no stopping us," O'Rourke said in a statement. "This is a historic campaign of people: all people, all the time, everywhere, every single day -- that's how we're going to win this election and do something incredible for Texas and our country at this critical moment."Even as O'Rourke has enjoyed a fundraising bonanza driven by a series of viral campaign moments and the national media spotlight, the fundamentals of the race continue to favor Cruz. CNN rates the race as lean Republican. No Democrat has won statewide office in Texas since 1994, and a Quinnipiac University poll released this week found Cruz leading O'Rourke by 9 points, 54% to 45%. 1952
