SINGAPORE, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said on Tuesday that China will become even more important globally and Singapore must find opportunities to ride on China's growth.Speaking at the Business China spring reception on Tuesday night, Goh said that China has over the past year weathered the global economic downturn with exceptional resilience.Despite shrinking external demand and rising unemployment, China's timely and bold policy responses have enabled its economy to grow at a sizzling 8.7 percent last year, he said, adding that China is now reinforcing its role as the engine for growth in Asia, if not the world.Goh said that the city state recognized China's potential early, soon after China began to open up its economy in 1978.Because of the early efforts made by the Singapore government and Singaporeans, China is today the city state's third largest trading partner and top investment destination, Goh said.As for riding on China's growth, Goh said that the Singapore government will help its companies gain an even stronger foothold in China, and continue to catalyze business opportunities in China.The seven provincial-level business councils, as well as other high-level dialogues and platforms, help open opportunities for companies, reinforce the Singapore brand name and increase its mindshare in China, Goh said.

PARIS, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- French President Nicolas Sarkozy met with hundreds of Chinese representatives during a reception at Elysee on Tuesday, the first celebration of Chinese Spring Festival at the presidential palace.At the reception, which aims to co-celebrate the lunar New Year, or Spring Festival, the president greeted happy new year to around 800 Asian attendees, mainly Chinese-French and Chinese visitors living in France.Sarkozy said the relations between France and Asian countries, including China, was becoming closer and closer. BEIJING, March 2 (Xinhua) -- A senior public security official of China on Tuesday urged relevant departments and local authorities to do a good job in ensuring security and maintaining stability as the annual national parliamentary and advisory sessions approach.All local authorities and relevant departments should make further efforts to ensure the meetings of the National People's Congress (NPC) and the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) go on safely and smoothly, Yang Huanning, administrative vice minister of public security, said at a national teleconference."The task of ensuring security and maintaining stability during the two sessions remains onerous" despite previous efforts in this regard, said Yang."We should keep clear-minded and never lower our guard," Yang warned.He urged local officials to do more work in dissolving social conflicts and try to root up troubles that may disturb stability.The vice minister also ordered to minimize the inconvenience that security measures might cause to people's life and work.Incidents that might disturb social stability and threaten security should be handled properly and strictly according to the law, Yang warned.Huang Ming, vice minister of public security, demanded at the same meeting emergencies and breaking events be dealt with promptly and properly.The annual full session of the CPPCC National Committee, the top advisory body, is slated to open Wednesday afternoon, while that of the NPC, the national legislature, is scheduled to open Friday.

UNITED NATIONS, March 18 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday called upon the international community to render more support and provide more assistance to Afghanistan, and voiced its support for a leading coordination role by the United Nations in the reconstruction of the south Asian country.The appeal came as Li Baodong, the permanent Chinese representative to the United Nations, was speaking to a UN Security Council meeting on the current situation of Afghanistan.The international community must keep focused on Afghanistan, which is currently at a key transitional period, and increase support and assistance to enhance Afghan sovereignty and capacity for development, Li said.The international community should also step up the efforts to assist the country in strengthening its military and police forces, promoting the process of national reconciliation in the nation, he said.He said that China supports the leading coordination role played by the United Nations in helping Afghanistan in its reconstruction process.China had actively supported and participated in Afghanistan's peaceful reconstruction, he said, adding that China will continue to provide assistance to Afghanistan within its capacity.China had invited Afghan President Hamid Karzai to visit China on March 21-25, Li said, adding that he is confident that visit will achieve positive results.

This figure, revised up from the previous 755.4 billion U.S. dollars, means China remains the largest overseas holder of U.S. treasury bonds.
