SHANGHAI, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has called for more efforts to promote independent innovation and upgrading of the industrial structure during his inspection tour to Shanghai which ended Sunday.     Hu visited scientific research bases, industrial parks and workshops of enterprises during the four-day tour, making investigations and research on the transformation of the mode of economic growth and work to promote sound and fast economic and social development. PYONGYANG, March 16 (Xinhua) -- Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Premier Kim Yong Il met China's new ambassador, Liu Hongcai, here Tuesday.During the meeting which was also attended by Vice-Premier Ro Tu Chol at the Mansudae Assembly Hall, the DPRK officials said they highly appreciated the relationship between the DPRK and China.Kim warmly welcomed Liu, saying the DPRK and China held a series of activities last year to mark the two countries' year of friendship and the bilateral relationship had witnessed constant achievements in areas of politics, economy and culture, especially in the commercial sector, from the beginning of this year.Kim expressed thanks for the support of the Chinese party, government and people to the DPRK on socialistic construction, saying the DPRK people would never forget it and it was the unswerving stand of the DPRK's party and government to continue consolidating and developing the DPRK-China friendship.Liu said the activities held by China and the DPRK last year to mark the friendship served as a good opportunity for young people in the two countries to exchange views and develop friendship.He said he would make efforts to boost relations between the two countries and expand areas of mutually beneficial cooperation.Liu, who arrived in Pyongyang on March 5, presented his credentials on March 8 to Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly.

NICOSIA, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi expressed his solemn position on the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan here Saturday, urging the U.S. to stop selling weapons to the Chinese province.Yang, who is paying an official visit to Cyprus, said in disregard of strong opposition and repeated protest from China, the U.S. administration flagrantly announced its plan to sell the weapons to Taiwan worth about 6.4 billion dollars.Such a move is gravely against the three joint communiques between China and the United States, especially the "Aug. 17" communique, Yang said, adding that it constitutes crude interference in China's internal affairs, and harms China's national security and peaceful reunification efforts.China firmly opposes such a move which runs counter to the U.S. commitment to support the peaceful growth of the cross-Strait relations, he said.The Chinese foreign minister urged the U.S. side to adopt a serious attitude towards the Chinese position, earnestly respect China's core interests and major concerns, revoke immediately the erroneous decision on the arms sales to Taiwan and stop selling weapons so as not to undermine the China-U.S. relations.Yang Jiechi said China has repeatedly stated its position on the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan. During a recent meeting in London between the foreign ministers of the two countries, the Chinese side again made clear its solemn stand on the issue, urging the U.S. side to fully recognize the gravity of the issue and stop selling weapons to Taiwan, he added.The Obama administration Friday notified the U.S. Congress of the plan to sell the weapons to Taiwan. The arms sales would include 114 Patriot (PAC-3) anti-missile systems, 60 UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters, 12 Harpoon Block II Telemetry missiles, 2 Osprey Class mine hunting ships and a command and control enhancement system, according to a Pentagon website.

  

BEIJING, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leaders joined lawmakers Thursday in discussions on the work report of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee.In the deliberation with lawmakers from northwest China's Qinghai Province, Li Changchun, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said he totally agrees with the report.Li Changchun called on Qinghai authorities to further carry out the Scientific Outlook on Development and explore a new path of scientific and leapfrog development for underdeveloped regions.Li Changchun also told the deputies to step up efforts to promote core socialist values and ethnic unity.Vice Premier Li Keqiang joined the the discussion with lawmakers from Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, in which he underscored the transformation of economic growth pattern.Li Keqiang said the region should improve economic restructuring, reforms and innovation, as the current drive to transform the economic growth pattern offers a new historic opportunity for western regions.Li Keqiang also said he entirely endorses the work report of the NPC Standing Committee.In his discussion with deputies from Jilin Province, He Guoqiang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said the province should take advantage of national policies to boost its own development.When speaking of fighting corruption, He, also head of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the CPC, urged more efforts to address the loudest complaints of the people, expand participation of the public, and strengthening the collection and analysis of online information.
