Customers are flocking to buy ammunition before a new California gun law goes into effect. It’s called the “1 million round month.” Just a few hours after opening its doors, Poway Weapons and Gear Range sold half of their 1.2 million rounds of ammo. “Today is a direct reflection of the law,” says Danielle Rudolph, Director of Sales at Poway Weapons and Gear Range. “People are trying to stock up and save up now that way they don’t have to worry about it next year.” The new law starting in July says in addition to a gun permit, gun owners will have to pass another background check to buy ammunition. Retailers will then have to log the amount of ammo gun owners purchase in a database. The records will be sent to the Department of Justice. When asked about the store’s large sale, Ron Marcus with the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence said in part: “The bottom line is regardless of how people try to prepare themselves before the law goes into effect, majority of Californians voted on Prop. 63 that put these laws into effect."Store owners say they will order more ammunition for customers to purchase at a reduced price. Thursday's line-up included video presentations by anime superhouse, Crunchyroll, zoom-style discussions with artists and producers, as well as a read-through and Q&A sessions with the star-studded cast of the Star Trek Universe. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Jalen McDaniels, San Diego State University basketball's sophomore forward, was accused of filming consensual sex acts with a classmate in 2016 without her knowledge and sharing it with friends, according to a civil lawsuit filed Wednesday in Washington.The civil suit alleges McDaniels recorded the intimate moments with an 18-year-old female student while they were both seniors at Federal Way High School near Tacoma, Wash.The lawsuit goes on to say while McDaniels later told the plaintiff about the unauthorized recordings and that he had shared it with his friends, she learned from other students that the video became widely circulated. When she confronted McDaniels, he explained he had gotten away with a similar incident involving another female student, according to the lawsuit.The plaintiff's attorney, Joan Mell, who filed the suit, wrote her client has suffered from several self-destructive behaviors as a result, including attempting suicide.SDSU is accused of wrongdoing in the lawsuit as well.Mell alleges in the lawsuit that SDSU was contacted by Washington police to provide them with McDaniels' phone number, but failed to do so. The suit says SDSU, instead, alerted former basketball coach Steve Fisher, who secured McDaniels a lawyer, and McDaniels refused to cooperate.The suit goes on to allege McDaniels' refusal to cooperate and, "that others concealed his wrongdoing prevented prompt criminal investigation and referral to the prosecutor's office for timely filing of criminal charges under Washington’s criminal offense of distribution of intimate images."In a statement, SDSU said there would be "no change in [McDaniels'] status at the university" at this time, after an investigation by Washington authorities resulted in no charges before McDaniels' enrollment at the school: 1837

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It’s one of the few drugs shown to help fight the novel coronavirus, and a large federal study on remdesivir just entered a new phase.Previous research sponsored by the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Disease showed remdesivir shortened recovery time in hospitalized COVID-19 patients on average from 15 days to 11 days.Now scientists and doctors are racing to find the perfect cocktail against COVD-19 by blending remdesivir with other drugs.California-based Gilead Sciences originally developed the drug to fight Ebola, but remdesivir was never approved. Gilead Sciences has offices in Oceanside.The drug works by interrupting the virus’ ability to replicate.“Remdesivir acts by shutting down virus production,” said Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease expert at University of California San Francisco. “It just forces the virus to stop making virus children.”Dr. Chin-Hong is studying remdesivir as part of the NIAID research.The problem is that stopping the virus from replicating isn’t enough for some severely ill patients. They suffer from a second problem: massive inflammation from the immune system’s war with the virus.That’s why scientists are trying a cocktail approach.“You have the virus to take care of, but you also have the body's response to the virus, which is inflammation, that you also have to take care of,” said Dr. Chin-Hong.Researchers started testing the first drug cocktail in May, using an arthritis drug called baricitinib that tames inflammation.But as the data on that part of the study gets crunched, researchers began testing the second cocktail this month, a combination of remdesivir and interferon beta.“Interferon beta is something we produce naturally to fight viruses,” said Dr. Chin-Hong. He said studies have shown people who don’t produce enough interferon beta struggle to fight off the virus.Researchers selected interferon beta after two small studies showed promising results against the coronavirus.Interferon beta can both reduce inflammation and kill viruses, so doctors are hoping it will be a potent one-two punch with remdesivir.Dr. Chin-Hong said he and other researchers started administering the new cocktail this month.Some patients will receive the cocktail, some will receive a placebo, and some will get remdesivir only. This kind of clinical trial is called an adaptive trial, which the FDA started encouraging in 2004. After each phase, the winning drug or cocktail will be tested against a new challenger.Dr. Chin-Hong said the eventual cocktail may include three or more drugs, similar to HIV medication. 2617

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Investors are watching carefully to see if interest rates keep dropping, or if they may eventually dip below zero in the United States.Recently, former Chairman of the Federal Reserve Alan Greenspan said it's a possibility, as rates have remained historically low for the past few years.In San Diego, the results of a negative interest rate would be good news for some and bad news for others."Low rates are a double-edged sword," says Dennis Brewster of SagePoint Financial. "If you're a borrower, if you're looking to buy a house today, mortgage rates have never been lower. But if you're a saver and you have money in the bank or in a CD, your rates are pretty poor."Brewster says the interest rate tends to drop when growth in the US is slow, both for the population and the Gross Domestic Product. He says that's what's happening now, as the baby boomer generation is getting older and later generations have fewer children. Brewster says slower population growth leads to slower economic growth because there are fewer people in the workforce, which means company production is down, and so is spending. He says that is happening despite record low unemployment.As for negative interest, Brewster says the average San Diego shouldn't worry since it's unlikely to happen."I wouldn't change your long term plans," he says.
