SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nine drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol during a downtown San Diego checkpoint Friday night.The checkpoint was set up on the 1400 block of G Street between 11 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday.Throughout the course of the night, police checked more than 1,100 vehicles. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Parts of Balboa Park reopened Friday after the COVID-19 pandemic forced closures in March.Park officials said the following areas would reopen: Central Mesa (El Prado, Plaza de Panama, Cabrillo Bridge, Pan American Plaza), all parking lots, Prado Restaurant, Tea Pavilion, and Visitors Center.Tim Lu and his daughter Matilda have been looking forward to a bike ride at the park for a long time.They live nearby and drove by regularly ever since the park closed. Week after week, all they saw were empty streets and sidewalks.When they got the news that parts of Balboa Park were going to reopen, Lu wanted to make sure they were there for the first day. And he wasn’t alone, as others showed up equally as happy to see the park reopen.Sarah Beckman, director of the Balboa Park Conservancy, said, “This is part of people’s daily routines. This is a neighborhood park. It’s also a global destination but our friends have been missing this for a long time now.”While at the park or the trails, San Diego County and city health orders are still in effect. They have signs posted around the property to remind you. But trying to improve the home you live in can become a budget-busting nightmare.According to a new survey from the Freedom Debt Relief, 69 percent of homeowners plan to renovate within the next five years. But 60 percent of people surveyed say they can't afford needed upgrades.That's why 73 percent of the respondents plan to finance their renovation plans."People want to stay in their homes," says Michael Micheletti, the Communications Director for Freedom Debt Relief. "Once it becomes your house, it becomes your home. So, perhaps people are willing to take on more debt to stay in those communities and those school districts they've become accustomed to."Micheletti says most of the people who plan to renovation will spend either more than ,000 or between ,000 and ,000. With that much money at stake, it's important to know what projects are worth the cost."There's give and take" says Gregg Cantor, the CEO of construction company Murray Lampert. "You have to prioritize what's most important."According to the survey, the most popular upgrades are also the most expensive.
