SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s City Council voted 8-1 Monday evening to ease parking requirements for certain housing projects, which they say will make it easier for developers to build new homes. Mayor Kevin Faulconer said Monday that the current parking rules are outdated, but opponents say San Diego isn’t ready for the changes and that the city should focus on improving transportation. The plan gets rid of parking requirements for multi-family units in neighborhoods within half a mile of mass transit. “While it took way too long to get this ordinance approved, I praise my colleagues for finally getting it across the finish line,” said Councilmember Scott Sherman. “This is good news, but our work to fix San Diego’s housing crisis is nowhere near complete. We must continue pushing innovative strategies to improve housing affordability and we can’t wait two years for approval.”Before Monday’s vote, at least one parking spot per unit was required. The new policy gives residents who don’t have a car the option of paying less for housing. Supporters say the move makes it easier for developers to build and help the city reach it’s climate action goals. Those opposed say San Diego doesn’t have the public transportation to support the change. Critics also say roughly 94 percent of San Diego residents own a car. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Unified School District officials confirmed to 10News Thursday that a teacher has been placed on leave while investigators look into accusations that he exposed a sixth-grade class to pornography.Officials said they were first notified Monday after a parent reported the alleged incident happened during a physical education class at Horace Mann Middle School, located at 4345 54th Street in San Diego."San Diego Unified is investigating the incident that allegedly occurred at Mann Middle School. The employee has been placed on leave pending the investigation,” district officials said.The district said it has spoken with at least 10 students regarding the report. There were at least 24 students in the class.District officials and district police are investigating."It's reprehensible," Craig Tinson, whose 12-year-old grandson attends the school, said. "Becuase the students are very impressionable. They're looking for adults to be the leader and unfortunately, it was compromised on this occasion."A parent of one of the students told 10News that her son was in the class when the teacher allegedly showed the students an adult video of a man and woman engaged in sexual activities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some quarantined cruise ship passengers at MCAS Miramar are voicing concerns after two days inside. Steven and Michele Smith were on board the Grand Princess cruise ship, which docked in Oakland Monday after more than 20 passengers tested positive for coronavirus. They were flown to San Diego Wednesday. Nearly 500 passengers are now being quarantined at the base. The Smiths are symptom free but frustrated. They've been in the same clothes since Monday. Their luggage is missing, after a possible mix-up with the baggage of passengers sent to other bases. The Smiths sent 10news photos of a laundry room they're not allowed to use and a lobby full of unclaimed luggage."Ours had a blue tie on it and none of those in the lobby have a blue tie. Somewhere the deck got shuffled and our luggage went wherever," said Steven Smith.They Smiths believe lack of resources and organization are also causing issues. They haven't been tested for coronavirus and have yet to receive a temperature check."Our friends being quarantined at the others bases are getting two temperature checks a day ... It feels like maybe there could be some concern ... they're not keeping up with our health," said Michele Smith.10news reached out to the base and officials at the Department of Health and Human Services about the Smiths' concerns and are waiting to hear back. 1379

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University officials announced Monday plans for healing circles after reports of several people calling out racial slurs toward the Black Resource Center on campus. A racially diverse group of men was in a vehicle Friday when they yelled slurs at the building on Lindo Paseo, a witness told 10News. “SDSU does not tolerate instances of hatred, racism or discrimination,” said university President Adela de la Torre, interim Vice President for Student Affairs Christy Samarkos, and Chief Diversity Officer J. Luke Wood in a statement. “At SDSU, diversity and inclusion are core values we uphold, and the university is deeply committed to supporting a campus climate and environment that is welcoming and safe, no matter a person’s background or experience. We do not accept hate-driven acts.” Campus officials organized three healing circles to be held on campus this week. Counseling and psychological services team members are also available.
