Dozens of children in South Georgia were potentially exposed to COVID-19 at a Christmas celebration last week after it was later discovered that Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus had tested positive for the virus.Long County, Georgia — a county located about an hour west of Savannah — hosted its annual Christmas parade last Thursday which included a tree lighting and a photo opp with Santa. At the time, Santa and Mrs. Claus were not exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19. However, two days later, both learned they had tested positive for the virus.Both WSAV-TV and WJCL-TV in Savannah both report that as many as 50 children took their photos with Santa last Thursday. It's unclear if either were wearing masks at the time of the photo op.Rob Parker, the Chairman of the Long County Board of Commissioners, says that while the event was not organized by the county, he does not regret that it took place.“While this event was not put on by the City of Ludowici or the Long County Board of Commissioners, it was well attended by our public officials and I believe I speak for the majority of them in saying that we still stand by the decision of the Chamber to move forward with these holiday traditions, and to bring some sense of normalcy to these trying times,” Parker said, according to WSAV.Parker added that Santa and Mrs. Claus would "never knowingly" have participated if they knew they had the virus.“They have both filled these roles for many years, and bringing joy to children during the holidays is one of the most important parts of their lives,” Parker said.The Long County School District has asked that children who may have been exposed to the virus to stay home until after winter break, and has already instituted an option "learn-at-home" option due to the increase in quarantined students. 1810

His view of the police who serve and protect his city is the result of decades of conflict between officers and people of color.“I know that any interaction I have could be the end of my life," he said.Not just in his hometown of Baton Rouge, but across the country.“As a Black man, police scare me. To the point where I don’t want to call them, because even if I call them for an incident I think I am justifiably right in, I’m afraid of what would happen to me," he explained. "If someone else alleges something because of the bias we have built-in and the stereotypes about Black people and particularly about Black men,” said Lewis.That’s something Baton Rouge Police Chief Murphy Paul is trying to change.“There are systems that we talk about that direct us in certain areas, that we need to have those courageous conversations on how could we police better," Chief Paul said.Chief Paul was hired in 2017 in the wake of the Alton Sterling killing. Sterling was selling CDs outside a gas station when a confrontation with two white Baton Rouge police officers led to his death. The incident sparked protests in the city and around the country.While he wants to make sure citizens feel safe when they interact with police officers, the chief has some hurdles to overcome, with one being the makeup of his department.Data from 2013 shows 55 percent of the people who live in Baton Rouge are Black, but Black officers only made up 29 percent of the police force.Researchers from the University of New Mexico found that when government and police diversity match its community, crime rates fall.Chief Paul says the number of Black officers has grown closer to 36 percent now, but the racial disparity is still an issue. One the chief says is much bigger than just skin color.“Our focus is on diversity, and not just diversity in race. We’re speaking on diversity in thought, diversity in religion, we want other minorities. So, we’re focusing on areas in recruiting in that way,” said Chief Paul“Systemic racism and white supremacy isn’t just a white cop with his knee on the neck of a black man," said Edward Goetz. Goetz studies race relations at the University of Minnesota.“It’s the system that creates that cop, it’s the system that tolerates that cop, and it’s the system that allows officers like him to escape punishment," Goetz explained.Almost 2,000 miles away from Baton Rouge, the effects of a mostly-white police force have taken an emotional toll on some of the people who live in Compton, California.“The sentiment was that the police were an occupying force,” said Dr. Keith Claybrook.Dr. Claybrook has lived in Compton his whole life. Now, he teaches African American studies at California State Long Beach.“When you can’t get basic needs met in the community, it’s not your community, When the businesses in the community are not owned by you, it’s not your community. When you do not control the schools in your community, it’s not your community,” said Dr. Claybrook.All these factors create feelings of distrust, and that distrust often gets aimed at the men and women paid to keep order in the community.Chief Paul says has implemented a number of policies to try and rebuild that relationship, including a six-month body camera review of officers if there is a complaint of misconduct, a community board to advise the department, and retraining police academy teachers to include implicit bias training.“So, it’s part of that evolving and listening to the community, listening to their concerns on how we police specifically in communities of color, how we’ve done that over the years, eliciting concerns on how we can be better,” said Chief Paul.But it’s not clear to people like Lewis and Dr. Claybrook if changes like this are enough.“Things have gotten better, then why are we having the same conversations with our children that our parents had with us that they’re parents had with them? But things are getting better?” asked Dr. Claybrook.“It doesn’t matter whether or not you are Alton Sterling at a gas station, whether or not you are Eric Garner outside of a convenience store or you’re Philando Castille, a school employee being responsible and respectable. (KGTV) - Grossmont College is looking to expand a program that offers free textbooks to students.The Open Educational Resources program, or OER, allows students to download digital versions of textbooks for free. College officials say it can save students more than ,000 each semester. In the 2018-19 school year, Grossmont students have already saved nearly .3 million."We realized students were making decisions like, 'Do I want to buy food today or do I want to purchase my textbook?'" says Professor Dave Dillon, who has championed the program at Grossmont.A study in 2013 showed that students spend around ,500 each year on textbooks. That's more than a semester of tuition at Grossmont, which is ,334.Additional studies showed that anywhere from 50-60% of students have decided not to buy a textbook for a class because it's too expensive.Dillon and five other professors started offering courses with the OER textbooks in 2016. Convincing teachers to switch from their traditional books to the OER versions has been a challenge, but Dillon says more come around every year.By 2018, 46 teachers had begun using the books. In the spring of 2019, about 100 teachers are using OER."Those are openly licensed materials that are free for students to use," explains Dillon. He adds that the texts offer the same quality as the books that cost students hundreds of dollars."For me, it was just too much money to pay," says Grossmont 2nd year student Edwin Hernandez. "A lot of times, I'd skip buying the book and just really pay attention as much as I can in class. It barely got me by, but it's still a bigger struggle."Fellow student Carlos Espinoza says he used the money he saved on textbooks to buy his first car. That helped him avoid spending more than two hours each day on the bus or trolley to get to and from campus."It saves me so much time," he says.While the books are digital, students have the option to purchase a printed version of the books for about each. Dillon says he's seen test scores and class completion rates skyrocket since he switched to the free textbooks.Grossmont offers two full Associate's Degree programs using just OER books, Geography and Sociology.But they don't work for every area of study. Many STEM courses have supplemental books that students still have to buy. So do English and Literature classes, where students need to purchase novels which aren't in the public domain.Meanwhile, publishers have begun to fight back. According to Dillon, some are trying to downplay the quality of the OER books. Others have tried to write their own versions. And some companies are switching to a subscription-based model, similar to Netflix, where students pay a yearly or monthly fee to have access to all of the publisher's library.Dillon says he's in favor of anything that can help more students afford college."It solves an equity issue," he says. 2923
