OMAHA, Neb. — Authorities in Omaha say two people died and two others are in critical condition after a home explosion and subsequent fire early Tuesday morning.Following the deadly explosion, it was discovered that the homeowner, 74-year-old Theresa Toledo, had filed a petition for a domestic abuse protection order against 27-year-old Alexander Toledo, stating her relationship as his grandmother. Theresa and her daughter, Angela Toledo, both died in the fire that broke out in the 4800 block of South 51st Street. A dog also was found dead at the scene. According to the Omaha World Herald, Alexander and another person who lived in the home suffered critical injuries.Theresa wrote in the petition, "Alex is on meth, mushrooms that I'm aware of, I haven't been able to see my grandchildren since summer because they are afraid of him as he talks to himself and says his stepfather is in his head, which is not true...he has put holes in the basement walls where he stays and you can't even walk in the basement. He has electronics in the walls & ceiling. I'm afraid he will start my house on fire."Toledo also described her grandson's alleged criminal history with narcotics. She concluded the petition by writing, "I need Alex out of my house now before he destroys my house or harms me, the drugs make him crazy."According to Omaha Fire Department Battalion Chief Scott Fitzpatrick, crews arrived on the scene at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, with a second alarm called at 8:23 a.m. The entire block was initially evacuated before authorities determined there was no threat to other residents. The house that exploded is a complete loss and was leveled in the explosion. Some surrounding homes have extensive damage.Neighbors described the scene as horrifying and said it sounded like a bomb went off. "I heard a very loud explosion. It sounded almost like something was bombed and I flew out of the house thinking it was my house and when I got outside I could see the house was on fire and someone was running down the hill and saying to call 911," said Marianne Distefano, a neighbor. When fire rescue arrived at the scene, the house was engulfed in flames. "It was horrible. I mean it was just in flames and after that, smoke, but you could see it was bad. It looked like someone had bombed the house," Distefano said. Distefano saw one neighbor jump to action. Jeff Mell ran towards the flames when he saw what was happening. "I heard something fall, it sounded like something fell on our house, I thought it was a tree or whatever so I came out front angry and I looked down the street and saw flames coming and I automatically just started running," Mell said. He and another neighbor wrapped a man in blankets and helped him to a safer area. Fire investigators are probing the cause of the explosion. "There are so many variables to tell right now, that’s why we have to investigate and kind of piece it together to see exactly what it was that made that house explode. As you can see, the explosion was pretty big," said Fitzpatrick. The fire department said that this will be a lengthy investigation.Read related court documents filed on Monday below. This story was originally published by Alyssa Curtis, Danielle Meadows, Katrina Markel and other staff at KMTV. 3280

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Since 1975, the Oceanside Senior Citizens Association has been serving hot meals to North County seniors in need. Due to financial hardships, that will end after Dec. 28."Our program has skyrocketed, we have a lot of seniors that are below poverty level, they have no family, they have no finances," Executive Director Sylvia Spears said. "Our meal is sometimes the only meal they get for the day and we ask for a donation only, we never turn anybody down if they can’t make a donation."Spears says the program is funded by senior donations, the county, and grants. However, she says senior donations have dropped 75 percent and they now have more clients than ever. Spears says the nonprofit asked the City of Oceanside for help, requesting an additional ,000 a month. The city could only offer half of that."I had to realize that we just couldn’t go on anymore and that’s hard because I know what these meals mean to these seniors," said Spears. Despite the nonprofit shutting down, the city says it’s committed to ensuring there’s no gap in services."Those who’ve been participating in the nutrition program will continue to have access to that here at the Senior Center as well as within their homes if they choose to do so," said Mark Olson, Parks and Recreation Division manager for Oceanside.Olson says they are working closely with the county to bring in another meal provider. 1423

O.J. Simpson was reportedly removed from a Las Vegas casino early Thursday morning for unruly behavior.Simpson's lawyer, Malcolm LaVergne, said the Simpson was banned from The Cosmopolitan hotel, according to The Associated Press. LaVergne said no reason was given for the ban. But LaVergne said that the story about Simpson being drunk at The Cosmopolitan is completely untrue. LaVergne says that Simpson is a social drinker, meaning he usually orders one drink and sips on it while socializing, and that he was at the Cosmopolitan to eat chicken wings. 582

Oklahoma teachers say they have reached their breaking point over pay and school funding and may walk off the job next month.Galvanized by a growing social media campaign, teachers wanted competitive pay to attract and keep teachers in the state. Teachers were hoping for a ,000 raise with House Bill 1033, collectively called the Step Up Oklahoma Plan, which looked to increase the tax on tobacco and gas. However, that bill was voted down in the state House because it didn't get the 75% approval needed to pass, according to Oklahoma Department of Education Superintendent Joy Hofmeister."It was soul-crushing," Hofmeister said.Because of that, and a handful of other failed bills in the last two to three years, teachers are now actively discussing a strike, on the heels of a statewide strike by public teachers in West Virginia."What spurred this momentum was so many teachers across the state are at their wit's end," said Teresa Danks, a third-grade teacher in Tulsa who is also the founder of the nonprofit Begging for Education. "No bills have been passed in favor of teacher pay or funding, the frustration and low morale has continued to grow. We're losing teachers like crazy to other states."One of the authors of HB 1033, Republican Sen. Kim David, did not reply to CNN's request for comment. The legislative assistant for the other author, Republican Rep. Kevin Wallace, said the request for comment was forwarded to the state speaker of the house. The speaker has not replied.Empty promises? 1522
