WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has been forced to play defense in states he led comfortably months ago, and on Thursday he set his sights on Ohio. The visit was an attempt to reframe the centerpiece of his reelection pitch. At Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland, the president delivered a short speech promoting his reelection campaign and highlighting his administration's work in the state. Watch his remarks below:Trump promoted the economic prosperity that much of the nation enjoyed before the coronavirus pandemic, and tried to make the case that he's best suited to rebuild a crippled economy. However, Trump's handling of the pandemic has weakened his reelection bid and he's having to spend time and resources in a state he won easily in 2016, but now could be in danger of slipping away.Shortly before the speech, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine's office announced that the Republican leader had tested positive for the coronavirus.DeWine's office said Thursday he took the test as part of standard protocol before meeting Trump. He had planned to join the president on a visit to the Whirlpool Corp. plant in northwest Ohio. The governor's office said DeWine has no symptoms but is returning to Columbus. His office said he and his wife, Fran DeWine, will both be tested there. DeWine then plans to quarantine at his home in Cedarville for 14 days.Lt. Gov. Jon Husted tested negative. 1402

WASHINGTON — The federal government is outlining a sweeping plan to make COVID-19 vaccines available for free to all Americans, but polls show a strong undercurrent of skepticism across the country. In a report Wednesday to Congress and an accompanying “playbook” for states and localities, federal health agencies and the Defense Department are sketching out complex plans for a vaccination campaign to begin gradually in January or later this year, eventually ramping up to reach any American who wants a shot. According to The Associated Press, facets of the playbook include:Most COVID-19 vaccines will require two shots to be taken three to four weeks apart. Those who receive these vaccines will need to receive doses made by the same drugmaker.Early in the vaccination campaign, supplies will be limited and will be reserved for health care and other essential workers, as well as vulnerable groups. Later phases of the campaign would expand distribution to the entire country. The vaccine will be free to those who receive it, thanks to funding allocated by Congress and the Trump administration.States and local communities will handle distributing the vaccine, and must submit plans to the federal government in about a month's time. The vaccination campaign faces an uphill battle from a skeptical public. An AP poll taken in May found only about half said they would get a COVID-19 vaccine. Experts say at least 70% of Americans need to be vaccinated or have immunity from a previous contraction in order to protect the country from the virus. 1562

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nearly 1.2 million laid-off Americans applied for state unemployment benefits last week, evidence that the coronavirus keeps forcing companies to slash jobs just as a critical 0 weekly federal jobless payment has expired. The new jobless claims were down by 249,000 from the previous week after rising for two straight weeks. The Labor Department’s report marked the 20th straight week that at least 1 million people have sought jobless aid. Before the pandemic hit hard in March, the number of Americans seeking unemployment checks had never surpassed 700,000 in a week, not even during the Great Recession of 2007-2009. On Friday, the government is expected to report a sizable job gain for July — 1.6 million. Yet so deeply did employers slash payrolls after the pandemic paralyzed the economy in March that even July’s expected gain would mean that barely 40% of the jobs lost to the coronavirus have been recovered. All told, 16.1 million people are collecting traditional unemployment benefits from their state. 1044

WASHINGTON (AP) — A new plan from Senate Republicans to award businesses, schools, and universities sweeping exemptions from lawsuits arising from inadequate coronavirus safeguards is putting Republicans and Democrats at loggerheads. The liability proposal promises to shield employers that negligently expose customers and workers to the coronavirus, limiting their legal exposure. That's according to a draft of the plan obtained by The Associated Press. Supporters say the proposal protects businesses and other employers who adhere to public-health guidelines in good faith. Opponents say it will permit wrongdoing to go unpunished. Lawmakers will consider the liability plan as they negotiate another coronavirus relief bill. 738

VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A backyard workshop in Vista caught fire Sunday afternoon, according to Vista Fire officials. Neighbors said they saw thick black smoke towering into the sky and heard almost a dozen explosions.Neighbor John Ploetz said it sounded, "like a bomb, people up the street heard it.""It takes a minute you know, your brain goes oh it's probably fine, or he's welding you know and then I see there's flames, and no firemen here, and the fence is on fire, I better call 9-1-1," Ploetz said he grabbed his garden hose and worked to contain the fire. He wet down nearby foliage and put out small spot fires on the outside of the fence.Fire officials said the fire started around 12:32 p.m. and arrived at the home in the 1000 block of Ora Avo Drive in minutes. Ploetz said what he did was something anyone would do and he was concerned the fire would spread to other homes nearby. He was shocked when a pine tree burned up in seconds, "it just whoosh! Went up like a torch, it was loud, that was before the firemen got here."The workshop contained propane tanks, and tools for metal art that the homeowner creates as a hobby. The family was at church when the fire started and were thankful no one was hurt. Among the valuables they lost were three boats and a motor home.Firefighters are still investigating the cause. 1340
