As Americans slowly return to work, older workers are finding the current economic situation much harder to navigate than their younger counterparts.Many large companies, including the airlines, are offering early retirement packages. For older workers, those buyouts come with uncertainty for their financial future.“These are tough times, especially for older workers,” said Susan Weinstock with the AARP.Weinstock’s concern is older workers are being forced out of work without enough saved for retirement. According to AARP, half of full-time workers experience job loss after the age of 50. It typically takes them double the time to get back into the work force as it does a younger worker, and even if they find a job, they end up making less money.For those over the age of 50 who have suddenly lost their job because of COVID-19, there's also less time to make up retirement savings that were lost.“We know saving through work is the best way to save for retirement, and when you don’t have that option it makes it a lot harder,” Weinstock said.Weinstock's advice if you're over the age of 50 and out of work is to use this time to upscale or re-scale. She suggests finding an online class. Showing employers that you're a lifelong learner can make you more marketable.“We want to make sure older workers are able to recover from this, along with everybody else in the economy,” Weinstock added.For those working from home, Weinstock recommends taking the money you might have spent on commuting and putting it into your retirement account. 1557

An Idaho Falls, Idaho father took to Facebook to write about the daily bullying his son endures. Dan Bezzant's Facebook post has now gone viral after parents everyone began sharing his words. "He's endured horrific surgery and has several more in the coming years. Anyway...I could go on...but please educate your children."Bezzant's son Jackson suffers from a condition called Treacher Collins.  He says his son is teased and called a "monster" everyday.  At the age of 7-years-old he has already talked about suicide with his father.Bezzant told East Idaho News he wanted the post to be shared so other parents would "feel my heartbreak.  673

ARCADIA (CNS) - Horse-racing fans and animal advocates calling for a ban on the sport were expected at Santa Anita Park Saturday for the biggest day of the park's racing calendar, with the million Santa Anita Derby headlining a 7-race schedule amid an ongoing controversy over a recent spike in horse deaths at the famed track.The Santa Anita Derby plays a major role in determining the favorites for next month's Kentucky Derby.Twenty-three horses have died at Santa Anita since Dec. 26, but two- time Triple Crown-winning trainer Bob Baffert told reporters last week that he remains confident about the level of safety at Santa Anita."If I thought there was a danger out there, I wouldn't even (send) my horses out there so I'm feeling good about what's going on here. But I don't want to jinx myself," said Baffert, who noted that he hasn't had any issues with his horses at the track since the racing season began Dec. 26.RELATED: Horse suffers fatal injuries at Santa Anita track, marking 22nd death since December"We've been under this dark cloud so hopefully we can move forward," he said.Baffert is expected to have two of his top 3-year-old colts -- Game Winner and Roadster -- in the Santa Anita Derby.A small group of protesters was already at the track Saturday, hours before the scheduled first post at noon.Heather Wilson told KTLA5, "We are here because we are speaking up for the horses that don't want to be here. Dianne Feinstein, D-California, sent a letter to the CHRB urging it to suspend all racing at Santa Anita "until the cause or causes of these deaths can be fully investigated.""I also ask for more information about what the California Horse Racing Board is doing to both investigate this matter and address some of the concerns that these incidents have rightly raised," Feinstein wrote.The CHRB recently approved proposals to strictly limit the use of anti- inflammatory medications on horses. It also approved a much-discussed 50 percent reduction in the allowable amount of Lasix, a diuretic that helps prevent horses from hemorrhaging. Santa Anita officials had initially proposed a ban on Lasix, but struck a compromise with the Thoroughbred Owners of California and the California Thoroughbred Trainers calling for a 50 percent reduction in allowable dosage.Santa Anita officials previously announced a series of other measures being implemented to help bolster safety of the horses, including:Phasing out the use of whips by jockeys;Complete transparency of all veterinary records;Trainers must apply for permission to work a horse (a timed, high- speed training exercise) at least 48 hours in advance;No therapeutic medications of treatments will be allowed without a qualified veterinary diagnosis from a state licensed veterinarian;Significant and strict out-of-competition testing;Increasing the time required for horses to be on-site prior to a race; andA substantial investment by The Stronach Group in diagnostic equipment to aid in the early detection of pre-existing conditions.Between December and February of the previous year, 10 horses died at Santa Anita, compared with eight in 2016-17 and 14 in 2015-16. The track averaged about 50 deaths per year from 2008-18, according to data from the CHRB.The unusually large amount of rain that has fallen over the Southland last winter has been mentioned as a possible factor in explaining the surge in deaths.Former track superintendent Dennis Moore and Mick Peterson of Racing Services Testing Lab were brought in to conduct a thorough analysis of the main track, and officials repeatedly said they found no problems.Saturday's races also include the 0,000 Santa Anita Handicap. 4974

As many head into a virtual school year, a Southern California charter school is training parents by offering classes on how they can be the best possible teachers this fall.Sage Oak, a public charter that serves eight counties in Southern California offered a no cost "virtual parent workshop" with courses like "what to do when you're teaching but the student isn't learning" and "how to support your struggling reader." Courtney Gibson, who handles marketing and communications for Sage Oak says, “This year with everything being virtual, we saw this a great opportunity to open it to our community for those who are on our waiting list or for those who are just starting distance learning in the fall and want tips and tricks on how to get their day started.”The pandemic has put a lot of focus on students and their schooling needs this fall, but Sage Oak thought, “What about the parents?”“We offer training for our teachers to start the school year and this year our teachers will go hand in hand with parents - so parents will have a role at home teaching their kids and needing strategies to keep them on track as well,” Gibson said.There's organizational tips, planning, and topics surrounding schedule implementation.“An important part of homeschool and learning at home for kids is keeping their routine that they would have in a traditional school,” Gibson said.Hundreds attended the summit, which will soon be posted on the school's website. I have a first grader who’s struggling to read so that session about how to help your struggling reader I’m excited about because I’m tired of the tears and the fights,” Case said.It's not all bad though. Case says she's looking forward to some aspect of school at home."One of the things that has been so great has been the pursuit of the things that interest them,” she said.Sage Oak's enrollment is at capacity due to a state funding cap, but they want parents everywhere to listen, watch and learn as we head into unchartered territory this year.“The fact that they care about the public and they want the public to be able to attend the summit even if they aren’t with the school it really shows the heart sage oak has for all students in education not just the ones bringing them funding,” Case said.And if you want to dive into a new type of education for your student, there's a course on that too. 3335

As of late Friday, more than 8,000 petitioners are calling for Columbus, Ohio’s renaming to Flavortown.“Columbus is an amazing city, but one whose name is tarnished by the very name itself,” the petition reads.“Why not rename the city Flavortown? The new name is twofold,” the petition adds. “For one, it honors Central Ohio's proud heritage as a culinary crossroads and one of the nation's largest test markets for the food industry. Secondly, cheflebrity Guy Fieri was born in Columbus.”Flavortown is Fieri's catchphrase, which he often says on episodes of "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives." Over the years, historians have accused Columbus of participating in slavery, murder and other atrocities against American natives in the 15th century. Despite this, Columbus was long hailed as a hero to the west, with a national holiday bestowed in his honor.“For many people in our community, the statue represents patriarchy, oppression and divisiveness.
