SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Tuesday were working to determine what led to the death of an inmate at the San Diego Central Jail. Deputies conducting a security check at the Front Street detention center found 26-year-old Ivan Ortiz of San Ysidro unconscious in his cell about 3:45 p.m. Monday, according to sheriff's officials. ``Deputies and medical staff performed lifesaving measures until paramedics arrived and transported Ortiz to the hospital,'' Lt. Michael Blevins said. Physicians pronounced Ortiz dead about 4 1/2 hours later. Ortiz had been arrested by San Diego police last June on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and felony vandalism. A criminal complaint alleges that he attacked two people last June 6 with a skateboard, and attempted to kill one of the victims, though specific details on the alleged attack were unavailable. He also faced two counts of assault with a deadly weapon -- a skateboard -- as well as three counts of felony vandalism regarding alleged incidents on May 10 and June 9, and a misdemeanor count of resisting arrest. At the time of his death, he was being housed alone in a psychiatric observation cell. The county Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of Ortiz's death. Duncan Hunter -- to illegally spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign funds for personal purposes, was sentenced Monday to eight months of home confinement, slated to begin immediately, and three years probation.The former East County congressman's wife, who also acted as his campaign manager during much of the time the pair improperly spent campaign funds on personal expenditures, pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge more than a year ago.Duncan Hunter pleaded guilty about six months later, then resigned from Congress the following month. He was sentenced in March to 11 months in federal prison, but has yet to serve any of his term as the COVID-19 pandemic led to a postponement of his self-surrender date. He's not expected to report to prison until possibly as late as January.Margaret Hunter's attorneys argued for an out-of-custody sentence involving home confinement and prosecutors agreed, citing her agreement to cooperate with investigators and the manner in which prosecutors say her husband directed blame at her when the allegations became public.Prosecutors did seek to have her home confinement delayed until January, as they stated it would be more punitive at that time, with the COVID- 19 pandemic currently keeping the majority of the general public confined to their homes.However, U.S. District Judge Thomas Whelan opted to begin her term immediately.Margaret Hunter made a brief, tearful statement to the court prior to sentencing, saying "I continue to take full responsibility. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities reached out to the public Wednesday for help identifying a man who entered the women's locker room at a Hillcrest hospital and prevented a woman from leaving the restroom after she rejected his advances.The suspect entered the women's locker room at the UC San Diego Clinical Training Facility at 210 Dickenson St. shortly before 11:15 a.m. on Aug. 20, according to San Diego police.A 30-year-old woman was using the restroom inside the locker room when the man walked inside, prevented her from leaving, then asked her, "Don't you want this?" while gesturing to his body, police said. The man then left the restroom, but held onto the outside doorknob to keep the victim from locking the door.He then walked back inside the restroom and blocked her from leaving four more times before she was able to lock herself inside the locker room and wait until he left.Once the victim heard a co-worker in the hallway, she left the locker room and went outside the building to get help, but she saw the man near another building and she ran away before calling 911.The suspect was described as a 6-foot white man with a thin build, unshaven face and short, dark-colored hair with a gray patch near his right temple. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced Thursday a dozen San Diego Public Libraries would reopen for the first time since mid-March, when they were shuttered as part of a state-wide shutdown order."Our libraries offer San Diegans a treasure trove of resources, whether its access to health information, distance learning, job searching or even just a book to pass the time, and we need them now more than ever," Faulconer said. "We're reopening our libraries with health and safety as the top priority while also expanding digital access to give residents more opportunities as we get through this pandemic together."The library locations to resume in-person services include Central, Carmel Valley, Point Loma, Mission Valley, Rancho Bernardo, Malcolm X/Valencia Park, Mira Mesa, Logan Heights, San Ysidro, La Jolla, Mission Hills-Hillcrest and College-Rolando.The libraries will open at 25% capacity starting Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The facilities will close for cleaning from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. daily and frequently touched areas will be cleaned hourly and after each usage. Everyone will be required to wear face coverings, have their temperature taken and practice physical distancing when possible."Our libraries have been closed since March 13 and, although we have added pickup service and virtual programming, there is no substitute for welcoming patrons into our buildings," said Library Director Misty Jones. "While we are offering limited services when we reopen, our staff will be working diligently to expand services as quickly and safely as possible."According to the library, in order to protect the health and safety of staff and guests some services may be limited or modified by staff, including time limits for computer use.
