A Detroit nonprofit says it was denied service because of the city it's located in.Franklin Wright Settlement has been in business for more than 134 years on the east side of Detroit, and says a bounce house company would not deliver to the city because of safety issues.Deon Mullen, director of the Franklin Wright Settlement, said he tried to rent a bounce house for an annual event for kids, but says Awesome Bounce in Canton told him no."I was quite surprised," he said.Awesome Bounce sent Mullen an email saying the company does not service Detroit because of employees being robbed and equipment being stolen and damaged in the past. Mullen said he was offended by the email and said not all of Detroit is dangerous. He said he feels the owner's decision is bad business.Mullen said he is most upset at a certain part of the owner's response, where he states he feels sorry for the deserving children who were born into one place and not another. He also doesn't feel that the issue of safety is a valid excuse."It can happen anywhere," Mullen said. A first grader at Latta Elementary School in Ada, Oklahoma was very excited when she realized one of her textbooks appears to have belonged to country singer and "The Voice" judge Blake Shelton.While it may have seemed like a cool coincidence to Marley Parker, her mother and former educator Shelly Bryan Parker had a different take on the 1980 textbook."Marley is EXCITED that her 'new' reader belonged to Blake Shelton, but I am EMBARRASSED!!!! A Canadian judge who wore a "Make America Great Again" baseball cap in his courtroom has been suspended for 30 days without pay.A panel investigated complaints made about Ontario Justice Bernd Zabel stemming from an incident in November of 2016. The panel found that the judge wore the baseball cap into his courtroom, made comments about the U.S. presidential election, and also commented on his political views, as well as those of other judges. The panel also found that when the judge gave a public statement about that day in court, his comments were not consistent with what had happened.The panel hearing was held August 23, and the panel received 81 letters of complaint. Panel members also reviewed a number of other items, including an Agreed Statement of Facts, in which Judge Zabel admitted he "engaged in judicial misconduct." On September 11, 2017, the panel determined there was judicial misconduct, and suspended the judge for 30 days without pay. It's the most serious sanction permitted by law short of removing the judge from office.  1091

A local mom has joined Tennessee lawmakers to back a bill that would require a prescription bottle design change in order to save young lives.Betty Mason of Green Hills, Tennessee lost her daughter, Katy to an opioid overdose in May 2016. "Great IQ, great student, great athlete. She had everything in the world going for her and it...her future was bright and it came to an abrupt halt with this," Mason said.Doctors told Mason that Katy was in the hospital on life support after the apparent overdose.Mason said her daughter started experimenting with prescription drugs after eighth grade with friends.She said for five years her daughter's big smile would fade during her time in and out of three treatment facilities.Mason hoped a state proposed bill, Pilfering Prevention Act, would help curb Tennessee's opioid epidemic.The act would allow prescription bottles for drugs considered severely psychologically or physically addicting to have a 4-number combination lock.Each patient would be assigned a pin number to unlock the container.Dr. Sterling Haring with Vanderbilt University Medical Center contributed to a John Hopkins report which recommended updating prescription packaging. The update would apply to only Schedule II prescriptions, meaning substances that have a high potential for abuse which may lead to severe psychological or physical dependence.Most prescription bottles haven't changed for 50 years."But to me if your boat is sinking, the first step is to plug the hole and then you start bailing the water out.
