The San Diego County Sheriff's Department takes all allegations of misconduct very seriously.  As a result, an investigation is underway.  Mr. Miller is currently using accumulated leave time until his planned retirement date.  We cannot comment further based on the pending investigation." 686

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — PETA is taking aim at SeaWorld once again, this time hoping to put a stop to the parks' dolphin shows.Officials held a press conference Wednesday to call out the park for what they called "dangerous," "circus-style" dolphins shows. The group argues trainers use dolphins "as surfboards" and have caused "open wounds and extensive scarring" on the animals."SeaWorld ceded to public pressure and said that it would phase out its circus-style orca shows, but dozens of other dolphins are still packed into shallow tanks, forcibly bred, and used as surfboards and launch pads in its shows," Heather Rally, a PETA Foundation veterinarian, said. "PETA is calling on SeaWorld to end these demeaning tricks and stop standing on dolphins' backs and faces."Rally, "Blackfish" director Gabriela Cowperthwaite, and behavioral biologist Dr. Toni Frohoff presented a report Wednesday in regards to their observations at the parks. The three argued that the shows, which are performed at all three of SeaWorld's parks, risk damage to dolphins' lower jaws. The group says this, in turn, can harm joints, strain muscles, and damage the animals' hearing.SeaWorld held its own press conference in response. In a statement, Dr. Hendrik Nollens, vice president of veterinary services at SeaWorld and Busch Gardens parks, called PETA's conference a publicity stunt, adding their paper's claims had no foundation:Their findings are presented in a white paper, which is the equivalent of an online blog, which is not peer-reviewed. They are also presented in a press conference instead of a scientific journal, in the presence of a moviemaker, which should be a red flag to all of us. Make no mistake, at SeaWorld, we are the animal advocates, and the difference is we actually have marine mammal and dolphin expertise; you cannot perform a veterinary exam from the stands.None of these behaviors are a veterinary or animal health concern. We have never diagnosed any injury associated with performing these behaviors, whether during presentations or interactions. If we did, we would have eliminated them by now. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neighbors say overnight surveillance video of a tagger in action is a glimpse of an ongoing, frustrating problem.Near Euclid Avenue and Polk Avenue, there is a church, an elementary school, and a sight Leanne Montano has seen before."Sad they're destroying someone else's property," said Montano.Video shows what unfolded just down the street. Just before 2 a.m., a motion-activated light flashes, but these vandals are undeterred. With another man and a person on a bike nearby, someone in a cap and hoodie casually begins spray painting the back wall of a home. For more than 40 seconds, he tags the wall, before he and his cohorts leave.It appears they weren't done. 10News found similar tags on fences, and garage door after garage door. A block away at Euclid Elementary, there was more graffiti. Montano's place was spared, but her home has been hit several times before. She says tagging - including the school - is a weekly occurrence."Tagging leads to other activities that aren't safe. My concern as a parent and resident is the children's safety and them walking to school, feeling safe. It allows other people to treat our neighborhood like crap. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nearly 140 pounds of liquid methamphetamine and two pounds of heroin were discovered inside a vehicle’s gas tank and spare tire at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry Monday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection says.According to the agency, the drugs were discovered after a detector dog alerted officers to the undercarriage of the vehicle around 4:30 a.m. Monday.Following the alert, officers guided the driver, a 52-year-old woman who is a citizen of Mexico and lawful U.S. resident, to a secure location for inspection.RELATED: Previously-deported sex offender arrested by Border Patrol in San DiegoThat’s when, according to CBP, officers found the drugs hidden inside the gas tank and spare tire.The driver was turned over to agents with Homeland Security Investigations while a 71-year-old female passenger was released.The narcotics are estimated to have a value of 5,000. 901
