Dr. Anthony Fauci has accepted an invitation to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Washington Nationals home opener Thursday to start the 2020 MLB season. The start of the season was delayed for over three months to help slow the spread of the coronavirus. Play will get underway Thursday as MLB plans to frequently test its players and staff for the virus in hopes to limit the spread.Dr. Fauci has been seen supporting the Nationals by wearing a face covering with the Nationals' logo to Congressional hearings.“Dr. Fauci has been a true champion for our country during the COVID-19 pandemic and throughout his distinguished career, so it is only fitting that we honor him as we kick off the 2020 season and defend our World Series Championship title,” the Nationals said in a statement. The honor of throwing the ceremonial first pitch before the home opener in Washington used to be a nearly annual invitation bestowed to the sitting president. When the then Washington Senators moved away, presidents continued the Opening Day tradition of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch in ballparks outside of D.C.But that tradition largely eroded during President Barack Obama’s tenure, as he only threw out the opening pitch before one Opening Day game. He also threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the 2009 All-Star Game.President Donald Trump has yet to throw out a ceremonial first pitch as president. He did, however, visit Nationals Park last year during the World Series. There, he infamously received a chorus of boos from fans in one of the most Democratic-dominant cities in the country.Dr. Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has helped the federal government oversee its coronavirus response as a member of the White House’s coronavirus task force.Although Dr. Fauci was once seen frequently alongside Trump at coronavirus news briefings, the two have been rarely seen together in recent months. During an interview with Fox News’ Chris Wallace aired Sunday, Trump called Dr. Fauci “a little bit of an alarmist.” But Trump added that he has a good relationship with Dr. Fauci. 2156

E-cigarette maker Juul Labs says they are planning to make a significant "reduction in force" as it looks to the future. The company announced the move in a statement as it also looks to pull out of some international markets as they "have not provided the kind of return necessary given the cost to continue investing in the market."According to the Wall Street Journal, the company is reportedly looking to lay off about 1,200 employees, nearly half its workforce. Earlier this year, the company laid off 1,000 employees, Forbes reported.Last year, at least four lawsuits were filed against the company claiming its ads were targeting young people. They also stopped selling several flavored products in the United States last year. The company also replaced its CEO last year. The company said they are looking to rebuild trust with its key stakeholders and the public."To better serve our mission, we must prioritize how we use our resources to execute on our long-term, focused approach," the company said in a statement. "This will allow Juul Labs to continue to invest in science and evidence capabilities, access control technologies, and future products in core markets that make up a vast majority of our business. While those investments will not provide short-term revenue, they will help us earn trust and build a company for the long term to advance the potential for harm reduction for adult smokers and combat underage usage." 1446

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- El Cajon city leaders will consider the possibility of a ban on the sale of vaping products at their next meeting in November. Tuesday evening, city council leaders heard from dozens of people for and against the idea; but the issue was not on the agenda.Councilman Gary Kendrick first brought up a city-wide ban in July. Tuesday afternoon, he was joined by school leaders, doctors, health officials, and parents who all believe vaping is an epidemic targeting kids. "These people who are selling vaping devices and vaping liquids to our children are profiting from the suffering of our children," said councilman Kendrick. A member of the Cajon Valley Union School Board said vaping is rampant in children as young as elementary age. "The liquids that are being used our being promoted to our youth , having vaping devices available at a very low cost in our liquor stores or 7/11/'s for approximately a dollar is promoting to our children that they can easily have access to them," said Jill Barto. Joey Johnson works at United Smoke Shop and Vape. He says if it weren't for vaping, he'd still be smoking two packs a day. "It's astonishing how much it’s truly helped me," said Johnson. Johnson believes a ban punishes legitimate businesses and will only create a bigger black market. "Gas stations places like that don’t care, so it’s either that or people on the streets or getting THC cartridges from people on the street who don’t know what they’re doing , they’re adding stuff to it to make it “vapable” or able to smoke and that’s the people that are dying," said Johnson. At least twenty-three people across the country have died from vaping related illnesses. In San Diego County, there have been no deaths, but at least twenty-two people have been sickened. One high school student told the council that vaping is rampant in the school bathrooms."The athletic kids vape, the honors kids vape, the college prep kids vape and their parents vape and at this point, it's sad to say, I think it's become a part of high school culture," said the student. Deborah Kelly told city leaders she was outraged at the failure of government to protect children. "Flavored tobacco products taste like candy, but act as poisons and kids don't smoke marijuana, they vape it," said Kelly. The council decided more research is needed before it takes any action on a possible ban. City leaders did vote to increase suspensions and fines for businesses that sell tobacco products to minors. Under the new rules, fines start at ,500 instead of ,000. If a business has a fourth violation within a five-year period, the retailer is subject to a permanent suspension. 2692
