Under current NCAA bylaws, student athletes are not allowed to earn money off their likenesses, but legislation in California is at odds with the NCAA's bylaws. On Monday, the California House unanimously (73-0 margin) passed a bill that bars student athletes from being prohibited from making money off their likeness. A version of the bill had previously passed the state's Senate, but will need to go back to the Senate to approve some changes to the legislation.The bill would allow student athletes to earn money off endorsements, autograph sessions and public appearances. The bill would not require colleges to pay athletes. Complicating matters for the NCAA, the legislation would prohibit the NCAA from banning teams in California from participating in intercollegiate competitions. That point could force the NCAA to either make dramatic changes to its bylaws or take the state of California to court. The legislation would be effective as of Jan. 1, 2023. The NCAA said today in a statement, "The NCAA Board of Governors has monitored SB 206 as it has moved through the California legislative process. As we evaluate our next steps, we remain focused on providing opportunities and a level playing field for the nearly half a million student-athletes nationwide.”In May, the NCAA announced the formation of a working group of college administrators. Their goal is to examine how to respond to legislation like the one put forth by California. Ohio State Director of Athletics Gene Smith said that the NCAA is not interested in having colleges directly paying student athletes. “While the formation of this group is an important step to confirming what we believe as an association, the group’s work will not result in paying students as employees,” Smith said. “That structure is contrary to the NCAA’s educational mission and will not be a part of this discussion.” The working group said in May it would provide an update in August, but so far, has not provided an update. After the formation of the working group, the NCAA sent a letter to California lawmakers requesting for them to postpone consideration of the legislation, ABC News reported. "When contrasted with current NCAA rules, as drafted the bill threatens to alter materially the principles of intercollegiate athletics and create local differences that would make it impossible to host fair national championships," NCAA President Mark Emmert wrote. "As a result, it likely would have a negative impact on the exact student-athletes it intends to assist."While Emmert and others are staunchly against paying athletes, college athletics is flushed with money, and its practitioners are handsomely compensated. In 2016, the NCAA and CBS came to an .8 billion, eight-year extension to air the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. "We harvest the icicles on site, and they are carefully plucked placed on top of the towers upside down,” Nelson says. “The artificial rain at night helps it grow and increase until it becomes a thick wall of ice, and they create arches, caverns and tunnels." It takes about a month to build on this acre lot. "I really love to see how excited people get," Nelson says. The magic of the ice castle can’t last forever. Two weeks after being grounded by the FAA, a Boeing 737 Max airplane en route from Orlando, Florida, to Victorville, California, had to return to Orlando International Airport to make an emergency landing Tuesday afternoon, the Associated Press reported. The jet, which was being shuttled to California for storage, only had two pilots on board. The jet belongs to Southwest Airlines, according to the AP.The Boeing 737 Max was grounded by US officials two weeks ago following the second deadly crash involving the series of planes. The AP reported that the emergency was not related to a glitch in the anti-stall software, which investigators believe caused the two previous planes to crash. On March 13, the FAA released a statement that said, "The grounding (of Boeing 737 Max planes) will remain in effect pending further investigation, including examination of information from the aircraft’s flight data recorders and cockpit voice recorders. An FAA team is in Ethiopia assisting the NTSB as parties to the investigation of the Flight 302 accident. The agency will continue to investigate." 1108

Two men were attacked by sharks off the eastern coast of Florida.The incidents occurred within an hour of one another, 100 miles apart.The first attack took place around 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday near Jacksonville Beach Pier, according to a witness. RJ Berger said he and his friend Frank O'Rourke were surfing together when a shark knocked O'Rourke off of his board and into the water.The four-foot shark then bit O'Rourke on the arm, Berger said.The two men managed to catch waves back to shore, where a lifeguard treated O'Rourke for his injuries.Instead of heading straight to the hospital, the two men decided to go to a bar, Berger said, where the shark attack earned the pair lots of free drinks."Everyone's like, 'you got bit by a shark, I'll buy you all the drinks you want,'" Berger told CNN.O'Rourke is a professional surfer and eager to get back out in water. He planned to see a doctor on Sunday and could probably use a stitch or two, Berger said.Bitten while boogie boardingThe second attack happened around 4:30 p.m. ET at New Smyrna Beach, about 100 miles south of the first. An 49-year-old man was bitten in the leg while boogie boarding, Volusia County Beach Safety said in a statement.The man was treated on the scene for lacerations to his right thigh, the statement said. He then drove himself to Bert Fish Medical Center for additional treatment.Berger say the shark that bit O'Rouke and believes it was a blacktip shark.
