SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Students at some private schools in San Diego returned for on-campus learning Tuesday.The Academy of Our Lady of Peace in Normal Heights is one of them. The 138 year-old Catholic, all-girls high school is the oldest in San Diego.Solana Musicant is excited to start her senior year."I think this is kind of the new normal, I think getting used to it now is really good," said Musicant.Head of School Dr. Lauren Lek said they began preparing for this day as soon as the school year ended."It's about layer upon layer of safety," said Lek.Those layers include face mask requirements, social distancing, and temperature checks upon entry."From our plexiglass desk to 6 feet physical distancing to make at all times to only eating outdoors to even our UV lights that are on in our buildings to help make sure all bacteria and viruses are cleaned out before the air comes into the classrooms," said Lek.Lek says the changes cost more than half a million dollars. The twenty-thousand dollar a year tuition and donations paid for the upgrades.It's an investment Musicant appreciates."I learn better in person, having a teacher there than I do virtually."Lek says 15% of the roughly seven-hundred plus students chose to continue learning virtually from home. 1275

San Diego (KGTV)- Small businesses around the county continue to navigate their way through the pandemic. A local Guamanian grill is using a musical twist to highlight their food, to bring in business.SMACK'N Guamanian Grill offers authentic Chamorro food. Chamorro is the native culture of the Mariana Islands region, including Guam.“All the recipes are authentic and passed down through generations,” says owner Christian Graham.The 24-year-old owner says opening the restaurant was a way to showcase his culture, which is not highly represented in San Diego.“I wanted to highlight what my grandmother, what my family has brought to the Chamorro food, the Chamorro community,” says Graham.When the pandemic hit, the newly opened SMACK'N Guamanian Grill had just opened six months prior.“Sales have dropped quite a bit between 30 to 50 percent,” says Graham. “We ended up losing about 20 percent of our staff members due to the pandemic because of their reduced hours.”As a young owner, Graham decided he needed a new, creative way to bring in business. He created a music video for the Guamanian Grill.“Just something different that restaurants haven’t done in the past.”The video, which launched a little over a week ago, already has hundreds of views on YouTube. Graham says business has increased by nearly 30 percent.He encourages other businesses to think outside of the box to develop ideas that will keep customers talking. Or, in his case, “rapping.” 1468

San Diego (KGTV)- In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, hundreds are giving back in the best way they can. This morning volunteers rolled up their sleeves to clean up Balboa Park. 14-year-old Maya Hundley spent the morning planting flowers with her family at the MLK Day of Service Interfaith Project. "I think it's important any day to help out, especially today," says Hundley. "Instead of being lazy or taking it as an extra day off, you can use that time to make a difference in the world." More than 300 volunteers spent the morning cleaning up Balboa Park. "People are doing anything from planting trees and flowers to raking leaves and hauling brush," says Melissa Spence with First United Methodist Church of San Diego. The city's parks and recreation department was on hand, showing volunteers which areas needed the most care. The MLK Day of Service Interfaith Project includes Christians, Jews, Muslims, and Unitarians working together. This is the 11th year the group has come together for the event. "As people of different faiths, we recognize that God gave us this earth we're being called to care for it in the best way that we can," says Spence. Volunteers say they believe this work would have made Dr. King proud."We all look so different, but we're all helping for a common cause," says Hundley. 1330

OhmConnect is a free service helping residents earn cash and save energy.“We’ve seen people’s energy bills increase typically from 10 to 15 percent,” says Curtis Tongue, Co-Founder of OhmConnect.With more energy use, the county has been no stranger to rolling blackouts. OhmConnect is hoping to change that.“Instead of powering up some additional power plant, after the sun sets, alternatively, you can just get people to save energy,” says Tongue.The free service pays users every week to save money.“We will send you a text message and ask you to power down for about an hour, and if you do, you get paid.”A new incentive program for users already has some people cashing in from a prize pool. San Diego, Calif. (KGTV) - California is the biggest prizes in the 2020 primary and the remaining Democratic presidential candidates are making a final push to turn out voters in San Diego. Much of their final efforts is focused on getting supporters in the South Bay."We're putting people out in their own neighborhoods, talking to neighbors they already know, making sure they're filling out their absentee ballots," said Joe Biden campaign staffer Jack Hurley.Biden opened an office in the Eastlake neighborhood of Chula Vista shortly after the Iowa Caucus. While Biden does not have as big a staff or infrastructure as other campaigns, they have seen a boost in volunteers since Biden won the South Carolina primary. "I want to see change and I wanted Joe Biden to be that change, and that means I needed to get to work," said Russell, who walked in to the Biden office Monday to volunteer.Bernie Sanders has a large organization in San Diego, based out of its headquarters in Barrio Logan. Monday, teams worked in shifts to train volunteers to canvass the South Bay, focused particularly on San Ysidro. "Our goal is turning out voters that a lot of them haven't actually voted before. So we're mainly focused on turnout at this point in time," one staffmember told the volunteers."It was tough in the beginning," said Sanders volunteer France Hanna about his first efforts at doorknocking. "But I realize as I share my personal Bernie story with all the doors that I knock on that I have a lot of commonalities with people."The Sanders campaign is particularly working to utilize a relatively new law in California that allows ballot delivery, meaning that campaign volunteers can pick up voters' ballots and deliver them to be counted. Because Sanders emphasizes turnout out non-traditional voters, especially young voters and people of color, ballot delivery could provide a boon, making it easier people who perhaps may not have gone to the polls to cast a ballot.The Mike Bloomberg campaign is also working to reach LatinX voters in the South Bay. "One of the main things we understand about the South Bay is that there is the most potential to turn out voters," said staffer Jesus Cardenas. Bloomberg has teams of volunteers knocking on doors and making calls. "It's going to be a little bit crazy, but it's going to be fun," Cardenas said.
