New spikes in COVID-19 cases have reinforced the importance of basic disinfecting and cleaning our homes to stop the novel coronavirus spread. But how do we know that the cleaners we have are effective in killing COVID-19 and other viruses?"One of the things that's important to know: Is there is a lot of good evidence that the coronavirus is one of the easiest types to kill?" said Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi Associate Professor of Chemistry Dr. Patrick Larkin.Yes, he said. He believes most household cleaners will destroy the virus. He said the best chemicals to use for disinfecting are, bleach, ammonia, and alcohol. However, he does warn that precautions be taken with alcohol concentrations."For example with isopropyl alcohol, you need at least a 50 percent solution; and ethanol [or ethyl] alcohol, you want at least 60 percent," he said. But, take note -- there also are guidelines for how you should clean, so it can be the most effective."CDC guidelines say you should clean the surface with soap and water first, and then apply your sanitizing or disinfectant solution," said retired Certified Industrial Hygienist Tom Samson. "Leave it on for at least one minute, and then you can rinse it off."Samson said not all household cleaners are the same, and do not have the same contact-surface time that is required. He recommends reading the labels of the cleaner you intend to use.Larkin and Samson said it is easy to make your own cleaners at home. However, be cautious about mixing chemicals, and be aware what you are cleaning with."The chemistry of mixing a chlorine-based cleaner with an ammonia-based cleaner can be deadly to those in the immediate area," said Samson. "The reaction of these two cleaners is to release chlorine products into the surrounding environment, in some cases, enough to cause severe injury or death. People need to know to get out of the area if this reaction happens and take their kids and pets with them!"Samson notes the Environmental Protection Agency also has a list of cleaners that will kill the novel coronavirus. This story originally reported by Chelsea Torres on kristv.com. 2149
Neighbors in a Florida neighborhood couldn't believe that random strangers were lining up on their street in the middle of the night for some beer. This past week, Angry Chair Brewing in Seminole Heights, Florida was been participating in Tampa Bay Beer Week and released a special barrel-aged Imperial German Chocolate Cupcake Stout for the event. For the past few days, neighbors have told Scripps station WFTS in Tampa that people began lining up in the middle of the night to guarantee they’d get their hands on a bottle.Ryan Dowdle, owner of Angry Chair, took to Facebook, posting:“We ABSOLUTELY NEED to get the bodies out of this neighborhood now.” He went on with a hashtag that said #dontparkonfern 748
NORFOLK, Va. - Heading into Election Day, one poll had Joe Biden up five in Florida. He lost.Another had him up double digits in Wisconsin. He narrowly won the state.Just like in 2016, the polling leading up to the election is facing criticism. "The pollsters got it knowingly wrong. They got it knowingly wrong. We had polls that were so ridiculous, and everyone knew it," President Trump said Thursday night. In Virginia, Christopher Newport University's Wason Center for Public Policy was pretty close to predicting the results. A poll in late October said Biden was up by 12 in Virginia with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4. Biden is currently up 9.43%."It's pretty clear many polls were off, so I'd say broadly speaking this is a challenge with estimating what the true electorate is going to be for pollsters," said Dr. Rebecca Bromley-Trujillo, Research Director at the Wason Center.Part of the challenge is the uniqueness of President Trump. "We have our likely voter models. We have our expectation about who is going to turn out to vote," Bromley-Trujillo said. "Certainly, President Trump has been a unique candidate who has brought out different types of people at higher numbers than is typical."So, what needs to be fixed? Dr. Eric Claville, the Director of the Center for African American Public Policy at Norfolk State University, says more nuance is needed. He feels pollsters should concentrate on issues to help forecast why people vote a certain way."I think the polls have to ask themselves: What is it that really drives individuals to vote one way or another?" Claville said.Reporters and campaigns could also provide more context, the experts said. "It would be better to present the margin of error. It would be better to say, 'If the electorate shifted this way, this is what it would look like,' so people understand this is what we expected based on past elections," said Bromley- Trujillo.During this current election, it's clear it's a lot closer in key states than many polls had it with ballots still being counted. This story was first reported by Brendan Ponton at WTKR in Norfolk, Virginia. 2138
