The frightening comments prompted headlines across the country.Half a year later, it's become the norm.It has now been six weeks since the U.S. has seen a day where local health departments reported less than 100,000 new cases of COVID-19, according to a database kept by Johns Hopkins University.On Nov. 3, more than 125,000 new cases of the virus — at that point, a record-shattering total — were reported across the country. In the 42 days since, the U.S. has recorded at least 100,000 new cases of the virus every single day.Between Nov. 3 and today, the COVID Tracking Project reports that the seven-day rolling average of new cases each day has nearly doubled, rising from about 96,000 a day to nearly 209,000 a day. During that time span, the lowest number of new cases reported came on Nov. 26 — Thanksgiving Day — when local health departments reported about 112,000 new cases throughout the country. That figure proved to be an outlier, most likely due to many health departments choosing not to release data over the holiday.The highest number of new cases reported occurred on Friday when more than 233,000 new cases of COVID-19 were reported around the country.The increase in cases has led to a spike in hospitalizations across the country. The COVID Tracking Project reports that there are currently about 113,000 people across the country fighting COVID-19 in a hospital, an all-time high. Hospitalizations have spiked in every region in the county in the past six weeks, though the Midwest has seen a slight decrease in hospital capacity in recent days. COVID-19 deaths are also currently at an all-time high. In the past six weeks, the seven-day rolling average of deaths linked to the virus reported each day has nearly tripled, rising from 852 a day to nearly 2,500 a day.The U.S. surpassed 300,000 total deaths linked to the virus earlier this week. Parts of an operation linked to Russian military intelligence targeting the US Senate and conservative think tanks were thwarted last week, Microsoft announced early Tuesday.The company said it executed a court order giving it control of six websites created by a group known as Fancy Bear. The group was behind the 2016 hack of the Democratic National Committee and directed by the GRU, the Russian military intelligence unit, according to cybersecurity firms.The websites could have been used to launch cyberattacks on candidates and other political groups ahead of November's elections, the company said.Among the websites a judge in the Eastern District of Virginia granted Microsoft control of were those with domain names designed to resemble sites used by congressional staff. They include "senate.group," and "adfs-senate.email."Other domains were designed to look like they were related to the Hudson Institute, a conservative think tank, and the International Republican Institute, whose board includes six serving senators, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Gen. H.R. McMaster.Microsoft said the domains were "associated with the Russian government and known as Strontium, or alternatively Fancy Bear or APT28." The company said it has no evidence that the domains were used in successful attacks but that it was working with the potential target organizations.Microsoft argued in court that the domains were posing as some of its company's services.Hackers could have used the domains to send emails to Senate staffers or people working for the Hudson Institute or the International Republican Institute in an attempt to trick them into handing over information, like their passwords.This form of attack, known as spearphishing, was successfully used to target Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman John Podesta in 2016.Missouri Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill's staff was similarly targeted by a Russian group last year. McCaskill says the attempt was unsuccessful."Attackers want their attacks to look as realistic as possible and they therefore create websites and URLs that look like sites their targeted victims would expect to receive email from or visit," Microsoft President Brad Smith said in a blog posted to the company's website on Monday night.The news comes less than a week after it emerged that two Democratic congressional primary candidates were hacked earlier this year.The campaigns of Dr. Hans Keirstead and David Min, both of whom lost in California's June primaries, were breached, but the groups responsible for the attacks have not been made public and may not be known.Microsoft said Monday that, in light of the ongoing threats to political groups in the US, it was launching a specialized cybersecurity protection service called AccountGuard.The company says it will offer the service to all candidates and campaign officials, as well as think tanks and political organizations that use Microsoft Office 365, at no additional cost.The initiative is part of Microsoft's Defending Democracy Program, which it launched in April. Police say a man in Australia fought off a deadly snake that was in his vehicle while he drove on a highway.In a press release, police in Queensland, Australia said a 27-year-old Gladstone man identified as "Jimmy" was driving down Dawson Highway back in June at 100 kilometers (62 miles) per hour when he noticed a highly venomous eastern brown snake, which is one of the world's deadliest snakes, near his legs.The incident happened near the town of Calliope.“I’m driving along at 100, and I just started to brake,” Jimmy said in the news release. “…And the more I moved my legs… it just started to wrap around me. Its head just started striking at the (driver’s seat) chair, between my legs.”Jimmy said in the news release that he fought the snake off with his seatbelt and a knife while attempting to stop his car.Police were able to capture the moment on body cameras, which they posted to their Facebook page. 923

(KGTV) - Neighbors report gas thieves are targeting Pacific Beach drivers.Neighbor Jaden Perez said she parked her car around 10 p.m. Monday night and when she came out Tuesday morning around 6:30 a.m. she notices her car wasn't how she left it, "the gas it was left open and then the cap was hanging out and I was like that was kind of weird."When she turned on her car, she noticed the gauge read 1/2 tank instead of the three-quarters she had the night before."It ruined my day and it was something that was petty," she said, frustrated. "I hear about people, their paint getting messed with, them getting broken in, and I'm in a nicer neighborhood and then that happened, I was just really bummed.""I think there's people who are not working period that are trying to just burglarize and steal and get whatever they want," neighbor David Como said. He wants the police to step in and make their presence known. He said for now, neighbors will keep an eye out.Jaden posted on Nextdoor to a roaring response, "I've had a lot of comments on my own post on Nextdoor lots of people saying hey you know this has happened to me too and so I was like, 'Oh my joke is truth!'
