Koontz said she flew to San Diego the morning after the accident and visited her son at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest.“It was really comforting because there was like eight Marines there in uniform. They stood there all night. They never leave him alone,” she said.Samuel Koontz posted on Facebook he has second and third-degree burns to his face but won’t have permanent scars.He wrote the vehicle, also called a Track, “Exploded and the track caught fire, me and my squad exited out multiple ways some being injured more than others. Me and some of my squad mates got out and went back to pull the rest of our brothers out that couldn’t do it for themselves for various reasons.”He also asks people to pray for the Marines still hospitalized and some badly injured.“it’s just kind of a traumatic thing I think when you go through something like that,” J.R. Koontz said. “I believe they put all the guys that were hurt in the accident in the wounded warrior battalion so that gives them time to go over what happened."The Marine Corps is not paying the flights and hotel stays for the families visiting the injured Marines. OMAHA, Nebraska — The family of Nikko Jenkins wants answers as to why he was able to swallow a set of keys over the weekend while in prison.Sophia Jenkins, Nikko’s older sister, tells KMTV television station in Nebraska that she went to visit him at the NDCS Prison in Lincoln on Sunday but was not allowed to because he had swallowed a set of at least seven handcuff keys. He reportedly was strapped to a bed when he obtained the object before ingesting them.The NE Dept. of Corrections says Jenkins, a Douglas Co. safe keeper, was involved in misconduct resulting in injury. He was by the NDCS medical staff and did not require outside medical care.This is one of a handful of bizarre instances where the convicted killer has mutilated or harmed himself while at the prison. In the last year, Jenkins has cut his face, tongue, and mutilated his genitals several times with razors and other items. A badge was obtained off of a guard’s uniform to cut his genitals. "It really did it was disturbing, it was heartbreaking, it was unbelievable. I couldn't even imagine like really he swallowed some keys let alone seven keys? I don't even know how that happened,” Sophia said. "He's mentally deteriorating, my brother, and I feel that the mental health professionals are lacking with showing no compassion for their patients."He is currently confined 23 hours a day and is under constant surveillance, though his competency is still in question. He was ordered to go to the Lincoln Regional Center, the state’s only mental hospital, in August 2014 but they refused to take him because of safety reasons. LRC doctors have also concluded on multiple occasions that Jenkins is faking mental illness, while his defense team’s doctors have said he suffers from schizoaffective/bipolar disorder.LB 424 was a special investigation initiated by the NE Judiciary Committee to look into the handling of Jenkins before he was released from prison in August 2013.  Shortly after he was let out, Jenkins murdered Jorge Ruiz, Juan Pena, Curtis Bradford, and Andrea Kruger.The Nebraska Department of Corrections & Director Scott Frakes declined multiple interview requests by KMTV this week.State Senator Ernie Chambers says Frakes should resign because nothing has been improved and he’s overwhelmed with the job."But an individual who has been found to have mental problems of various kinds continues to engage in self mutilation in several instances it's done with equipment or material which belongs to a staff member out there or a guard. It looks to me like this is a scheme which is designed to result in that kind of activity.  When it happens this many times it establishes a pattern and any competent director of a department would never let it happen but the fact that it continues to happen. "He's (Jenkins) in a very narrow, restricted, supposedly always under surveillance location and these things continue to happen,” Senator Chambers described.In a written statement the NDCS said, “NDCS reviews incidents such as this to determine if policies and procedures are appropriate or need to be changed. Our goal is to provide a safe environment for NDCS staff and inmates.  We are committed to providing the best possible care and program opportunities for all inmates.”Jenkins is still awaiting a death penalty hearing.  A date has not been set. 3448

Not just because it can help slow the spread of the virus, but can also help you get to where you need to be, and it’s a trend that could continue to grow.“If you don’t have that test, you may not be able to allowed to enter the country or state, be forced into quarantine, or even be fined a fee both for testing and for non-compliance for the requirements,” said Dr. Kelly Cawcutt, Assistant Professor of Medicine & Infectious Diseases of the University of Nebraska Medical Center.It’s becoming more common to have paperwork proving you’ve had a negative COVID-19 test just days before your arrival to a destination overseas, and states could soon follow suit.“Several states are starting to ask for very similar requests where you’ve had a negative COVID test within the last 3-5 days, or you’ve been in a full quarantine either on arrival, or you pay for a test on arrival,” said Cawcutt.Proving you’ve tested negative can help slow the spread, including in areas that can’t afford to pay the price of an outbreak.“Some of the areas that for vacation, maybe smaller areas, and they may not have a health care system that can maintain an outbreak brought in by travelers,” said Cawcutt.So if you’re traveling, whether for work or vacation, it’s essential to lookup that pandemic related information before you even reach that spot.“Really vetting out what you’re doing, where you’re going, and what the requirements are both for travel but also for the actual location you’re planning to attend could be things to think about and plan ahead for in ways that we haven’t routinely had to plan,” said Cawcutt.“I would look to see if there are a lot of cases in that area and really reevaluate whether you want to go or not, if you don’t have to go and there is a lot of coronavirus things spread there, I would seriously reconsider it,” said Anne O’Keefe, Senior Epidemiologist with the Douglas County Health Department.It’s also critical to remember that getting test results back can take a few days, so planning ahead is crucial in fighting against this deadly pandemic.“You don’t want to go somewhere and make other people you’re visiting, whether its family, your co-workers, or business colleagues. OAKLAND, Calif. (KGTV) -- A young child apparently shot himself in the head at a home in Oakland Wednesday, multiple media outlets reported. The shooting, which happened on Ritchie Street, appeared to be an accident, police said. The boy was taken to the hospital in critical condition, KGO reported.Police told KGO at least one adult was inside the home at the time. Helicopter video from the scene showed several cars parked on the property and a barbecue grill on the driveway.The home is near a recreation center and baseball field.There were no immediate reports of an arrest.10News is monitoring breaking developments. 632
