Not since 2005 has the Atlantic basin seen so many storms in a hurricane season. The year 2020 now eclipses the old record, with at least 12 of those storms making landfall this year in the U.S. alone.“Those two years are quite similar. They are anomalies,” said Lewis Link, a professor at the University of Maryland who studies hurricanes.An increasing number of hurricanes are becoming major ones, which means their wind speed falls into a Category 3 hurricane or higher.“Partially, it could be attributed to warming, higher sea surface temperatures, which are the fuel for generating hurricanes,” Link said.It’s not just coastal areas that bear the brunt of concern during hurricanes. More and more often, the effects from these storms may hit the coast first, but they are being felt far more inland and in many more states than ever before.A recent map put together by the National Hurricane Center showed all the counties impacted by hurricanes and tropical storm winds this year. The effects of those storms reached inland states like Arkansas, Tennessee, West Virginia and Vermont.Yet, the effects from these storms go beyond just high winds.“The biggest problem we have is with flooding, is inland flooding,” Link explained. "And some of that is attributed to tropical systems that continue to dump a lot of rain, long after they cross the shoreline.”That’s an issue, he said, because many areas don’t have the infrastructure in place to deal with the heavy, quick downpours that are associated with tropical systems.“Not only are they old, but they’re just not up to the task. That’s a serious problem. How do you change that?” Link said. “We’re not set up well to change our infrastructure based on changing conditions.”It is a change that may have some communities rethinking exactly what it means to be in a hurricane zone.While the official hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, occasionally some tropical storms do develop outside those dates, including some that formed this year in May. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — A body was discovered in a small North County lake while vector control workers sprayed for bugs Thursday.A helicopter pilot was dropping larvicide over the area behind the Vons shopping center at State Route 76 and Frazee Road about 1 p.m. and spotted the body floating on the surface, according to police.The lagoon was inaccessible by foot, said police. Officers deployed a drone to confirm there was a body on the scene.Oceanside Fire Department Lifeguards were called to retrieve the person's remains. Investigators believe he or she may have been in the water for at least two weeks.Oceanside Police responded to the scene and investigated the discovery. The incident is the second discovery of a body in Oceanside Thursday. The skateboarder and Birdhouse Skateboards have teamed with Black Plague Brewing in Oceanside to create the aptly named, "Tony Hawps IPA." The brew is described as smooth beer brewed with Simcoe and Amarillo hops for a piney foundation and dry-hopped with Citra and Centennial hops for an orange aroma with hints of grapefruit."Tony Hawk is such an icon; we wanted to partner with him to create something authentic to connect with skate fans and skateboarders. " says Jordan Hoffart, a pro skateboarder and president of Black Plague Brewing. "The beer needed to be light and crushable after a skate session while also having enough heft to be your go-to when you are ready to party."And now in addition to his legendary career and influential exploits off the half-pipe, Hawk has a beer of his own."Never imagined I’d get to help 'design' a new beer, but my life keeps taking unexpected — and delightful — turns. On Sunday, tension escalated at the US-Mexico border as U.S. officials launched tear gas at a group of migrants rushing the border. Now, thousands of migrants are staying in temporary shelters across the border in Tijuana and Mexicali, hoping to claim asylum in America.For Edwin Hernandez, Carmen Lopez and their two children, it was an unimaginable journey to get to the border.“For us, it's hard,” Hernandez says. “We never thought we'd do this.”The family traveled 2,500 miles by foot from their home in Honduras to the border town of Tijuana.  The family formed a human chain, locking arms, and began their long trek, all in hopes of seeking asylum in the United States. Hernandez says they needed to leave due to escalating problems in their home country.“Problems involving gangs and extortion,” Hernandez explains.Hernandez says he’s already seen two of his own cousins murdered by gangs, and he worries for his two children, ages 7 and 12.“The problem is, I’m just always thinking of the kids,” Hernandez says. “I think to myself, what's the point of doing this? I'm doing this for my two children and for her.”The family wasn’t at the border when tear gas was deployed on migrants trying to cross illegally on Sunday, but they saw the images.“I would not want that to happen to my kids, or to me or to my husband. So, I would rather wait,” says Lopez.They want to make sure they enter legally by asking for asylum at an official checkpoint.Right now, the closest thing they have to an official document is a piece of paper they received from a checkpoint with their places in line.
