Gavin Newsom ordered thousands more body bags for distribution to morgues in three counties, including San Diego, state health authorities reported a new high for coronavirus-related deaths and cases.California recorded 53,711 new COVID-19 cases and 293 additional deaths on Wednesday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- At least five food handlers have tested positive for COVID-19 -- four restaurant employees and one grocery store employee, according to San Diego County health officials.County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said Sunday that the grocery store alerted county officials and followed sanitation protocols before reopening the store.Fletcher also stressed that there is no evidence of COVID-19 association with food, citing the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.MORE: SAN DIEGO COUNTY COVID-19 TRACKER"If you have a sick worker, they must stay home," Fletcher said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A former gang member who turned his life around in stunning fashion just got accepted to four different universities, including UC Berkeley and UC San Diego. 10News first met Apollo in 2010, as he and several others went to court to get off a gang injunction list for an Oceanside street gang.  An injunction prevents gang members from doing activities in certain areas, like associating with each other.  At that time, Apollo told us he had been out of the gang for several years after four years inside as a teenager."What hurt the most is hurting my mother... You want to amount to something, so (when i decided to get out) I'm trying to do this for her," said Apollo.Apollo was removed from the list about a year later, which is a rare feat. Among the requirements: written explanations, background checks, and approval from prosecutors and a judge.Since then, he has gone on to Palomar College, earned awards at speech and debate competitions, and at the age of 30, he just got accepted to four schools, including UC Berkeley and UCSD.  He's leaning towards Berkeley, though he isn't sure he can pay for it.  He's hoping to have a career in communications or social welfare so that he can help his community."Sometimes I can't believe it and sometimes I feel I should be doing more.  You want to leave something for them to look at, to hopefully inspire them to do more and succeed," said Apollo. 1473

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - 10News sat down exclusively with Father Joe Carroll to talk about his legacy and fight against homelessness.He got involved with the homeless in San Diego in 1982. "The bishop called me in his office told me, the next day he's going to appoint me head of St. Vincent de Paul and my job was to build a shelter."Immediately assigned as the guy to find a solution to the problem, "When I first started, I'd be writing letters, 'please help me, please help me' and I'd get stacks back, 'no, no, no'."Despite dealing with rejection and other challenges early on, Father Joe has remained committed to fighting homelessness for decades. As Father Joe says, "the rest is history."He remembers ten years ago when he first recognized the problem of homelessness was growing. "We ignored it and we ignored it and had all these crazy ideas which I still think they have, so, I still think it's not reachable for a few more decades."Father Joe may be retired but he's still involved weekly in the fight against homelessness.As he watches the City of San Diego continue to try and solve the problems, he tells 10News, "housing is not the answer to homelessness."He says, instead, the answer is rehabilitation.After decades of fighting homelessness, Father Joe says the answers come from the individuals themselves, "slowly but surely I learned you had to talk to the homeless first to know what you're doing."While he's more removed from Father Joe's Villages since retirement, he still talks with the homeless community daily."Everyday I get out of here, I shake hands with people who are success stories, and that's what makes me want to do more." 1663

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A group of friends from Del Norte High School in 4S Ranch have turned their summer boredom into a way to help others.Andrew Zhang, Jerry Wu, Nick Genovese and Rishi Peddakama are 3D printing face shields and donating them to local hospitals."I guess we were all just kind of feeling like restless and we needed to do something during this like difficult time," Zhang says on why he and his friends decided to start making PPE from scratch.The boys have turned their summertime hobby into a new non-profit, Shield Our Health Heroes. Their website has a place for donations, and all of the money goes towards materials for more face shields.So far, they've raised enough money to donate 750 face shields to 10 local hospitals."We've been told multiple times that our shields fit better and are better quality than a lot of the shields that they're getting," says Genovese."I really think we are making an impact in our community," adds WU. "Our products are actually really helping these health care workers who need these."The four friends each brought their unique talents to the group effort. Andrew came up with the idea and has spearheaded the project. Rishi built the website and set up the donation PayPal account. Jerry does all of the social media and advertising. Nick contacts the hotels and sets up the deliveries."We try to make it hassle free for them," says Peddakama."We just really want to give back during this time," says Zhang.
