RMH Franchise Holdings, a company that operates a number of Applebee's restaurants, announced this week that customers who used credit cards at some locations may have been subject to a data breach. "Upon learning of a potential incident, RMH promptly launched an investigation and obtained the help of leading cyber security forensics firms," the company said in a statement. "Based on the experts’ investigation, RMH believes that unauthorized software placed on the point-of-sale system at certain RMH-owned and -operated Applebee’s restaurants was designed to capture payment card information and may have affected a limited number of purchases made at those locations."The company said that customers’ names, credit or debit card numbers, expiration dates and card verification codes were subject to the breach. Customers who used Applebee's tabletop payment system, or its online ordering system were not subject to the breach.RMH said that customers should closely monitor their payment card statements, and check for any unauthorized transactions. If customers notice any unauthorized transactions, they should contact their bank.RMH said that it learned of the incident on February 13, and has since contacted law enforcement. "RMH is continuing to closely monitor its systems and review its security measures to help prevent something like this from happening again," the company said. The company did not say why it waited three weeks before notifying the public. Many of the affected transactions took place from December 6 through January 2. Ronald “Khalis” Bell, a co-founder and singer of the group Kool & the Gang, has died. He was 68. Publicist Sujata Murthy says Bell died Wednesday morning at his home in the U.S. Virgin Islands with his wife by his side. The cause of death has not been released. Kool & the Gang grew from jazz roots in the 1960s to become one of the major groups of the 1970s, blending jazz, funk, R&B and pop. After a brief downturn, the group enjoyed a return to stardom in the ’80s. The group won a Grammy in 1978 for their work on the soundtrack for “Saturday Night Fever.”In addition to vocals, Bell also played the sax for the band. ROCHESTER HILLS, Michigan — A Michigan man is accused of trying to kill a teen after the boy allegedly knocked on his door for directions.Jeff Zeigler, 53, a former Detroit firefighter, is charged with assault with intent to murder over the incident.Lee Kolozsvary, a long-time friend of Zeigler's says he's blown away by the allegations and thinks he was just trying to scare away the teen at the door.During a hearing on Friday, Zeigler said the public isn't hearing the whole store.Brennan Walker, 14, got lost on his way to school without a phone after missing the bus."I guess I put my hand up, I don't really remember, and I started to run," Walker said. "I looked back behind me and I saw him aiming at me and I turned back. I turned back and I heard the gunshot."Walker's family said the thought he was trying to break in. It was all caught on security video.Kolozsvary says he doesn't think Zeigler had any intent to kill."The Jeff Zeigler I know, he's a good guy," Kolozsvary said. RICHMOND, Va. — A Virginia judge has dissolved one injunction but imposed another preventing Virginia's governor from removing an enormous statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. The new 90-day injunction bars the statue’s removal from Richmond's Monument Avenue while claims in a lawsuit filed by a group of property owners are litigated. Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring has moved to dismiss the case, but the judge says the property owners have standing and could succeed on at least one of their claims. Gov. RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — Police say a man who was suspected of burglarizing a vehicle was fatally hit by another car as he fled the Southern California scene. The 35-year-old man allegedly stole property from a car in Riverside, California, around 9:30 p.m. Thursday. The man's name has not been released. Authorities say the vehicle’s owner confronted the man, who ran away while discarding the items from the car. As he fled, the man tripped and fell into the path of a 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander. Police say the Outlander struck the man, who later died at a hospital. The Outlander’s driver was not injured and is cooperating with police. 648
