BATON ROUGE, La. — Louisiana officials have announced two deaths from Hurricane Delta.Gov. John Bel Edwards said Sunday an 86-year-old man from St. Martin Parish died in a fire that started after he refueled a power generator in a shed. The governor said it didn't appear that the man had let the generator cool down before refueling it.Louisiana officials are also attributing the death of a 70-year-old woman to the hurricane. State officials said the Iberia Parish woman died in a fire caused by a natural gas leak.Earlier Sunday, officials in Florida said a 19-year-old tourist from Illinois drowned after being caught in a rip current unleashed by the remnants of Delta in the Gulf Coast.Delta made landfall Friday evening in southwest Louisiana as a Category 2 hurricane and then began weakening quickly over land. It came weeks after Hurricane Laura battered the same region.Laura claimed 32 lives, though only seven of the deaths came the day that the hurricane struck. Many others were caused by carbon monoxide poisoning from generators.As of Sunday, utility crews in Louisiana are scrambling to restore power and residents in the besieged southwest part of the state are vowing to rebuild in the wake of Delta. 1229

BELTRAMI COUNTY, Minn. – A man who was hunting in northwest Minnesota was shot and killed by another hunter last week.The Beltrami County Sheriff’s Office says 28-year-old Lukas R. Dudley was shot by 33-year-old Rain Stately last Wednesday and it appeared to be an accident.The men were reportedly not hunting together.Around Dusk, Stately told authorities that he saw movement of what he thought was a deer and then fired one round from his rifle.“When he discovered Dudley, he immediately called 911 and is cooperating with the investigation,” the sheriff’s office said.The sheriff’s office says Dudley was not wearing the typical blaze orange or other high-visibility clothing.Dudley was transported to a medical examiner’s office for an autopsy. Officials haven’t said where the bullet struck him or at what range.The incident is being investigated by the sheriff’s office, Red Lake Tribal Police Department, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Division of Enforcement and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. 1027

Three days a week, the unit travels to different farms in the north Denver area."Without us, a lot of these folks wouldn’t have the opportunities to see anybody who’s medical. And also, because we go to them, they don’t have to miss work," said Salazar.The mobile unit provides a place for the migrant workers to get screened for diabetes, high or low blood pressure, get lab work done, and even see a medical provider for free through a federal grant."If one of their workers gets sick, it’s going to spread super quick, because they work in such close contact. And if they’re out, we’re not going to have any food," said Gonzalez."I don’t think most people realize that agriculture is the backbone of this country," said Salazar. (AP) — A Tennessee school district has issued an apology for a social studies assignment that asked students to pretend to be slave-owners and brainstorm expectations for their slaves.The Tennessean reported Thursday that Williamson County Schools and Sunset Middle School apologized for the assignment, saying it was inappropriate. The homework also assigned other tasks including the creation of a political cartoon depicting immigrant labor in the U.S. and writing a public service announcement about the hazards of living in urban areas.The two teachers who assigned the homework also apologized, saying in a statement that the assignment has been pulled and won't be graded.The Tennessee Department of Education says the middle school is 70 percent white. 785

BORREGO SPRINGS, Calif. (KGTV) - California State Parks are preparing for wildflower blooms across the state. The unpredictable and rare occurrences attract thousands of people to the parks. Some of the most beautiful blooms take place in desert landscapes. These rare blooms occur when precipitation levels in the areas are high, combined with years-long drought that eliminate grasses and weeds that take up nutrients. These conditions cause wildflowers to thrive. McCamish says during the 2017 'super bloom' word of the beauty spread fast on social media, drawing in 6,000 to 7,000 cars a day.He says the rush of visitors overwhelmed the small town of Borrego Springs but that this year they're more prepared. Restaurants are planning to offer to-go meals and rangers will set up pop-up visitor centers to spread out where visitors go.McCamish recommends people check out other parts of the 700,000-acre region, including Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area.And if you plan to spend the night figure out lodging ahead of time, whether that be a hotel or camping.In addition to the flowers, visitors can enjoy nature on a bike.
