NATIONAL CITY, Calif. (KGTV) - A new public market is the first of several projects that city leaders hope will reinvigorate 8th Street in National City. The Market on 8th will be located on the Northwest corner of 8th and A. It will feature 13 different restaurants and pop-up shops, along with a beer garden.RELATED: Food Hall, Beer Garden proposed for National CityDeveloper Joel Tubao, who grew up in National City, says he hopes it can spur a renaissance in the neighborhood."We want to add to the community," he told 10News. "We want to keep people here in the community and make this a place to gather. So we hope this is going to be a stepping stone for what's soon to come in National City."Just one block away, another big project will help that effort. There is a planned mixed-use condo and retail complex on 8th and B, replacing an abandoned warehouse.RELATED: Little Italy Food Hall considered among 10 best new food halls in U.S.That project will also feature a stand-alone restaurant by well-known San Diego chef Phil Esteban, marking his first solo endeavor.Leej Razalan is helping with that project and also putting a cookbook store in the Market on 8th. He sees the potential of the corridor."You can now mix in live with work with play with walkability with a sense of entertainment at home," Razalan says.RELATED: Carlsbad's long-awaited Windmill Food Hall opens to dinersThat's what the National City Chamber of Commerce has in mind for the area, which they hope will rival 3rd Avenue in Chula Vista or University Avenue in North Park."The future of 8th Street is exciting," says Chamber CEO Jacqueline Reynoso. MONTEREY, Calif. (KGTV) - A California State University, Monterey Bay professor will receive a substantial grant from the Defense Department to find methods to harness fog. The 6,589 gift will fund research on ways to use mesh-based devices to collect water circulating in fog, according to CSUMB. The DoD is interested in the study to collect usable water for drinking or irrigation, which may be useful for military personnel in remote foggy regions. "The presence of fog affects visibility and can impact Army operations,” Julia Barzyk, the program manager for Earth Materials and Processes at the Army Research Office told CSUMB. “We are excited that this award will enable the science needed to mitigate those effects as well as provide opportunities to develop the next generation of scientists." College of Science Professor Dan Fernandez, who has a doctorate in electrical engineering, plans to buy two FM-120 Fog Detectors for his research. There are 106 of the devices in the world, Fernandez reported.“We live in a region where coastal fog is an important aspect of our place. It makes sense that this effort is taking place here and that it can also involve our students who then get to experience the fog both personally, while attending CSUMB, and by participating in state-of-the-art research involving fog,” Fernandez told CSUMB. 1356

Nancy Pelosi's bid to become speaker of the House is becoming more complicated, as 17 Democrats have now signed a letter saying they won't vote for her on the House floor, according to four sources with knowledge of the matter. If these Democrats stick to this pledge, the California Democrat, who is currently the leader of her party in the House, may not have the votes to become speaker. In addition to the 17, five additional Democrats have pledged not to support her on the floor but have yet to sign the letter, one of the sources said. The goal of the Pelosi critics is to force her out of the speaker's race by convincing her she does not have the votes to win. But Pelosi and her allies reject that notion and are confident of their chances, saying she will call their bluff on the floor.Pelosi first needs to win a majority of the House Democrats to win the caucus nomination on November 28. Then, she needs to win a majority of House members who vote for a candidate -- likely 218 -- and can't afford to lose too many Democrats on the floor.Democrats are poised to hold at least 227 seats in the new Congress compared to 200 for Republicans, with eight races still yet to be called by CNN.What's unclear is who will run against Pelosi on the Democratic side. Ohio Reps. Marcia Fudge and Tim Ryan both have told CNN they are not ruling out a bid.Drew Hammill, Pelosi's spokesman, projected confidence that she would get the votes."Leader Pelosi is very confident in her support among Members and Members-elect," Hammill said.A senior Democratic aide said Pelosi would not be deterred."Members on the 'list' are all to the right of Pelosi," the aide emailed. "Pelosi will take this to the floor in January, so she will be calling their bluff." 1758
