(KGTV) -- Neighbors in an Escondido neighborhood are worried after they say dozens of tires were slashed overnight Saturday.The incidents reportedly happened on 4th Avenue and 2nd Avenue between Date and Elm Streets.Residents on 4th Avenue reported waking up Sunday morning to find that at least 11 vehicles had their tires slashed.Similarly, residents on 2nd avenue reported that nearly 30 vehicles had slashed tires.Police said they have been made aware of the incidents but it’s unclear if they have a suspect or will be investigating.Imagine waking up and finding your tires slashed, then finding out it happened to DOZENS more on your block. Experts say the United States is going through a maternity and child health crisis.“We know that every 12 hours, around the clock, a mother dies as a consequence of childbirth, and if you are a Black woman, those numbers are three-fold higher,” said Dr. Rahul Gupta, Chief Medical and Health Officer at the March of Dimes. “If you're an American Alaskan woman, its two and a half times higher.”The March of Dimes is highlighting the areas of the country that are considered maternity care deserts, meaning places where there are no hospitals providing obstetric care.They say a third of counties are affected and it’s not just a rural American problem. It’s urban counties too.Dr. Rahul Gupta touched on some of the consequences, such as mothers dying unnecessarily, 22,000 infants dying before their first birthday, and the pre-term birth rate rising for a fifth year in a row.The numbers and problems are amplified in maternity care deserts, which have a higher poverty rate and lower household income. That’s something that's escalated during the pandemic.“The COVID-19 pandemic has unveiled the underlying challenges as well as ugliness within our systems of care as well as communities in terms of institutional racism and bias as well as the socioeconomic conditions that lead to some of these outcomes,” said Gupta.A report touches on many different policy-based solutions that could improve access to maternity care, including expanding access to Medicaid for new moms from 60 days to 1 year after childbirth, allowing better access to midwives, reimbursement for doula care, and expansion of telehealth services. 1629

Farm life is not easy, but sometimes that life picks you.“When we were little boys, I think it was my dad pushing us out the door all the time,” said orchard owner Curtis Rowley, with a laugh. “As you get older, it gets it your blood and you seem to stay around.”Rowley is a fourth-generation farmer in rural Utah.“Here on the side of us, we have a tart cherry orchard,” Rowley said, motioning with his hand. “We also have a gala block of apples.”However, Rowley’s specialty is peaches.“I know when they are perfect, not by color, not but size, but when I cut them open and smell them,” he said.Knowledge passed down through his family taught him how to dodge the always humming farm equipment. He knows what to do when mother nature turns on the AC. Unfortunately, there are some things that even a seasoned farming family cannot plan for.“We were still pruning when the COVID-19 pandemic hit,” Rowley said.Like many in this business, Rowley relies on outside help for planting, pruning and harvesting. He uses the H-2A government program that allows U.S. employers to bring foreign nationals in to fill temporary agricultural jobs.“As they shut down the Mexico border at the end of March, our guys happened to be right there at the time,” he explained.Rowley said luckily, the group got through, but now, it is the harvest and it’s all hands on deck.He is feeling the pinch.“It’s really tight,” Rowley said. “I won’t tell you it’s perfect.”The window for picking does not stay open for long.“We have somewhere between three and maybe four days if we’re lucky,” he said.Rowley said he has tried other options, like offering jobs to people furloughed or laid off.“They’ll come and help for a bit, but as soon as their jobs open back up, they leave and that’s understandable,” he said.The timing of the harvest also coincides with schools starting.“To hire high school kids to pick apples is just not going to happen,” he said.Rowley said they will squeeze through the fall harvest, but others will not be as lucky.“There’s a lot of people still looking for help,” he said.As for the future, this farmer said his family will remain planted, ready to weather whatever storm comes their way.“We’re planning on being here farming and continuing to grow this fruit,” he said. 2278

FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) -- A tortoise is recovering after falling 10 feet from a wall Sunday, cracking its shell.The tortoise was found by a good Samaritan after falling from a 10-foot wall while being chased by a dog, according to the County News Center.The 70-pound tortoise was taken to a veterinary hospital where animal services were called.Officials say that’s when they learned it would cost several thousand dollars to fix the 35 to 40-year-old tortoise.“We have a donor-driven Spirit fund that we can use for severe medical cases such as this one,” said County Animal Services Director Dan DeSousa. “This tortoise will get the extensive, aggressive care and long-term observation that he needs to regain his health and hopefully live to a great, old age.”The tortoise underwent surgery Tuesday, where veterinarians put screws into the shell then used ties on the screws to hold the broken pieces together.Veterinarians then used the same paste material that dentures are made from to seal the cracks.For more information or to donate to the Spirit fund, click here. 1098
