SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Eight new cases of hepatitis A were reported throughout the county over the last week, according to the San Diego County Health Department. In total, 544 cases of hepatitis A have been reported throughout San Diego County. The new numbers come after the Board of Supervisors Monday extended the state of emergency amid the hep A outbreak.  RELATED: Board of Supervisors extends state of emergency for hepatitis A outbreakSince the outbreak began, 20 people have died from the infection. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - HazMat teams responded to a fire station in North Park after a suspicious package was found outside the station, according to a San Diego Fire-Rescue official.Fire crews found the package by Station 14's front door around 3:20 p.m. Sunday when they returned from a call.Fire officials told 10News the package was a taped-up cardboard box with writing on it that made it appear dangerous. Some of the words were misspelled.The hazmat and bomb personnel set up a perimeter around the station, blocking off 32nd Street and Lincoln Avenue by about a block in each direction.The bomb squad x-rayed the package, determined that it was not dangerous, and reopened the street around 5:45 p.m.The package was filled with aluminum flux and trash, according to a tweet from San Diego Fire-Rescue.At about 3p on Sunday someone left this box at SDFD North Park station on 32nd St. The bomb team was called to ID the contents - aluminum flux and some trash. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Driving in San Diego is starting to look like Los Angeles - or worse.For many San Diegans, the morning and afternoon commutes are more congested than the year before.Equinox Project, a research group, reported that San Diego drivers spent more than 19 hours stuck in traffic last year. The statistic is 30 minutes higher than 2016.“San Diego traffic wasn't even a thought back in the day,” said commuter Omid Sabet.San Diegans traveled 29 freeway miles per day in 2017, more than any other major county in California. By comparison, Los Angeles drivers traveled only 23 highway miles.“People want to buy houses, rent houses, but they’re getting pushed farther and farther away,” said Mikaela Bolling with Equinox Project.The number of solo drivers dropped half a percent in 2017.“It’s a small decrease but it’s good news that more people are carpooling, biking or walking to work,” Bolling said.Few San Diegans are using public transit or bike lanes but Bolling believes that could change.“There are more bike lanes being put in, so more people may be biking to work. Also, walkable neighborhoods, more people may be living closer to where they work.”  1189

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Health providers in San Diego County will start receiving new training this week to better spot signs of domestic violence strangulation.Health professionals at all of the county's major health providers will take part in new training Wednesday, San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan said. Additionally, thousands of posters that read, "Only you decide what goes on your neck," will go up in clinics, urging victims to report strangulation.The ,000 campaign, called San Diego County Health CARES, was announced during Domestic Violence Awareness month. It is the latest effort to address strangulation crimes in San Diego County, which has seen prosecutions of strangulation-related felonies jump four-fold in the last six years."This initiative is another big step in fighting domestic violence," Stephan said. "We know that victims are often reluctant to report to police but will trust their healthcare provider, so this is an opportunity for early detection and intervention that could save lives."Over the last 22 years, strangulation accounted for 13 percent of domestic violence homicides in San Diego County, she said.In 2017, police agencies in San Diego County agreed to adopt a new protocol for responding to suspected strangulation cases in which officers now refer victims to forensic nurses for evaluation. The protocol is the first of its kind in California and among the first in the country, said Palomar Forensic Health Services director Michelle Shores.The change has had a significant impact on prosecutions, Stephan said. In 2015, there were 66 prosecutions for strangulation. In 2018, the number jumped to more than 250.In more than half of strangulation cases, there are no marks or physical signs of injury on the victim's neck, making detection more difficult, said San Diego County Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jennifer Tuteur. That makes it even more important that doctors know what kind of questions to ask patients and what other symptoms to identify.Symptoms of strangulation may include vision and hearing loss, lapses in memory, pain while swallowing, and vocal changes, Shores said. 2163

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — For more than three hours, two women were trapped inside a downtown San Diego elevator.Fire crews were called to the Copley Symphony Hall at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday after the elevator stopped as it took the women to the 34th floor.A Battalion Chief said the women felt a jolt and the elevator's lights flicker before it came to a stop.Rescuers were able to reach the women at about 11 p.m., more than three hours later. Until then, the women Facetimed a friend to stay calm, but a friend was worried they would run out of air or suffer from heat related injuries."Once I learned that they pried the doors open because it was so hot in there, what else could I do but just wait?" Kalani Creutzberg said. "It turned into a waiting game. And I'm just very very fortunate that there's a happy ending to this."Both women were taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out. While they were shaken up and nervous, neither appeared to have any serious injuries. 982
