Over the last week, Arizona's explosion in coronavirus cases has made it the No. 1 global pandemic hot spot.According to the New York Times, Arizona topped the list of states and countries with a high rate of virus spread than any other state or country.The newspaper's research, which ranks countries and states with the most new confirmed coronavirus cases over the past week -- adjusted for population -- lists Arizona No. 1, with about 3,300 cases per 1 million in population. Florida (2,700) and South Carolina (2,300) follow. Bahrain (2,200) is No. 4.In response to the ranking, a spokesperson for Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey Wednesday morning said the New York Times analysis lacks context, citing testing statistics from other countries -- including Brazil.While the testing disparities may explain differences in comparisons to other countries, Arizona is still among the states with the most new cases per capita in the U.S.Here is the full response from Ducey spokesperson Patrick Ptak:Testing - if you aren’t testing, it doesn’t mean you have fewer cases, just that you know less about them.For example, AZ has done 8,615 test per 100K. Brazil has done 1,435.Arizona has been working hard to increase testing, with more on the way.Daily Testing - In fact, Brazil is currently testing 0.025 per 100k people per day. By contrast, yesterday, Arizona reported 12,212 tests (and this was far from our highest day in the past week) which works out to 167 tests per 100K on that one day alone.Positivity rate – both Brazil (33%) and Peru (39.9%) have a higher positivity rate than Arizona. This, in combination with their much lower testing, suggests the outbreaks in these places are much larger than is being reported. PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Within a series of unfinished walls, Tom Stefanko oversees hundreds of construction workers every day, all of them wearing what looks like an old-school pager. Yet, the technology involved is new.“I think it gives workers a little bit of comfort,” Stefanko said.The devices are proximity tracers, designed to make sure workers on construction sites remain socially-distant during these pandemic times.“If I was in contact another person, it would start beeping red,” Stefanko said. “And if I stayed there longer, it progressively beeps louder.”While they alert workers that they’re too close to one another, the proximity tracers also record that data, in case a worker later ends up testing positive for COVID-19.“It provides the ability to have a real-time alerting system and then also be able to go back historically and see who's been in contact with whom to do the contact tracing,” said Robert Costantini, CEO of Triax Technologies.The company began to develop the proximity tracers when the coronavirus outbreak began.“The stakes are really high, if you get it wrong,” Costantini said. “I mean, workers could be infected. You can shut your site down. The cost can be enormous.”The contact tracers, though, cost about a dollar a day, per worker. More than 15,000 of them are now in use on more than 70 construction sites around the country, including the 1 million square foot building that Tom Stefanko and his team are working on in Philadelphia.“We have a thousand tags here on site,” Stefanko said. “Most workers just keep it on their hardhat. That’s how cold liquid nitrogen is when it transforms cereal into "Dragon’s Breath."“The vapor coming out of your mouth is a nice effect," said Ron Daranty, who owns Subzero Nitrogen Ice Cream in Parkland.However, a mom in St. Augustine is warning parents of children with asthma about the fad food after her son experienced health issues from eating Dragon's Breath.“We’ve sold thousands of them since January and we never had any issue," Daranty said.Subzero employees in Parkland have always warned people to be careful with the very cold cup and avoid drinking any excess liquid nitrogen, Daranty said. But now they've added on a new disclaimer."Even though that lady was sharing the article for others that may have respiratory challenges, I thought it was great and we added it to our sign of caution. We also started making people aware of it," he said.The risk of ingesting liquid nitrogen is purely scientific. Chris Pait, of the South Florida Science Center in Palm Beach County, said the extremely cold temperature can give people frostbite in their mouth or lungs."It can evaporate away in your mouth, but if you breathe that cold air in, there’s a chance that it’s cold enough to freeze the water that’s in your lungs," Pait said. "Your lungs are a mucous membrane. They need to be moist to work the way they should, so if you freeze your lungs obviously that isn’t a good thing. That’s going to cause problems. It’s almost like frostbite internally rather than externally."That’s why the science center shows off the power of liquid nitrogen in a controlled demonstration where professionals use gloves and goggles while handling liquid nitrogen. They show children how it can freeze a balloon, send a plug flying off a beaker, and, of course, make ice cream. But they serve that ice cream in a way that's safe. “When we do ice cream, the nitrogen is just there to freeze the liquid into the more solid form so by the time they eat it, the nitrogen is gone, it’s evaporated away," Pait said.Daranty said employees are specially trained on how to handle liquid nitrogen.
