BEIJING, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks last Friday with top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Il in Changchun, capital city of northeast China' s Jilin Province.Kim, general secretary of the Worker' s Party of Korea (WPK) and chairman of the DPRK National Defense Commission, paid an unofficial visit to China from August 26 to 30 at the invitation of Hu, also general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).Hu said that at present, China and the DPRK are increasing vigorous exchange and cooperation in various fields, among various departments and between provinces along the borders. The two sides have maintained close communication and coordination on issues of the Korean Peninsula and the region.Hu said China is ready to work with the DPRK to carefully safeguard and develop friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries.During the talks, Hu put forward three proposals for further strengthening relations between the CPC and the WPK and between the two countries.Firstly, the two sides should maintain high-level contact, which is of great significance to continuously pushing forward the development of the China-DPRK links. Leaders of the two sides should continue to maintain regular communication in various forms.Secondly, the two sides should advance trade and economic cooperation. Expanding and deepening mutually beneficial and win-win trade and economic cooperation is in the basic interests of the two peoples. China is ready to grow trade and economic cooperation on the principles of government guidance with enterprises playing a major role, market operation, and mutual benefits for win-win results.Thirdly, the two sides should strengthen strategic communication. Since the regional and international situation is undergoing profound and complicated changes, prompt, thorough and in-depth communication between China and the DPRK on major issues is of critical importance to effectively maintaining peace and stability in the Northeast Asia region and to promoting common development.

BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said Tuesday that China and Russia should make joint efforts to achieve common development and combat global challenges.While meeting with Chairman of the Russian Federation Council Sergei Mironov in Beijing, Hu urged the two countries to work for the establishment of a more fair and rational international order.Mironov's visit, which ran from Oct. 17 to 19, was another high-level visit on the heels of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's three-day state visit to China last month."China is willing to work with Russia to materialize consensuses and tasks agreed to during high-level visits," said Hu.Mironov on Monday co-chaired with China's top legislator Wu Bangguo the fourth meeting of the cooperation committee between China's National People's Congress and the Russian Federation Council, a regular parliamentary exchange mechanism for the benefit of bilateral ties.Hu said China supports the increasing exchanges between legislative bodies of the two countries, hoping the two sides could help publicize the ideas of generational friendship and reciprocal cooperation, push forward pragmatic cooperation in various fields and cooperation on adjacent regions of both countries.Hu also said the two countries should enhance coordination within multilateral mechanisms in a bid to contribute to improved China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination.Echoing Hu's remarks, Mironov said the sound development of Russia-China ties complies with the mutual interests of both countries, adding that Medvedev's successful visit, during which the two countries signed a package of deals and agreements, would have a positive impact on future bilateral cooperation.The Russian Federation Council will play its due role in facilitating bilateral cooperation in such areas as politics, trade and energy so as to make new contributions to the friendship between the two countries, Mironov said.Premier Wen Jiabao also met with Mironov later on Tuesday, and called on the two governments to fully implement consensuses reached by the two sides, inject new vitality into the two countries' modernization process and maintain world peace and stability."The profound changes of the international situation has not only offered precious opportunities but also brought forward higher request for developing China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination," Wen said. 

BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang Thursday ordered centrally-administered state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to achieve greater development over the next five years.Zhang also required the SOEs to boost efforts to reform while optimizing industrial structures and reinforcing management.He made the remarks during an inspection tour of the China Electronics Technology Group Co., one of the nation's 122 centrally-administered SOEs.Zhang said the centrally-administered SOEs, as the backbone of China's economy, should focus on increasing their competitive edge while developing hi-tech industries and nurturing their own brands with independent intellectual property rights.During the January-to-September period, the combined net profit of China's centrally-administered SOEs totalled 641.65 billion yuan (96.6 billion U.S. dollars), up 55 percent year on year.

HANOI, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday met separately with the prime ministers of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos in Hanoi ahead of a series of summits between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its partners.At the meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Wen hailed Vietnam's preparation for the upcoming meetings, saying that China would join with Vietnam to ensure the success of the meetings at a time of profound changes going on in the international situation.Wen called for proper handling of the issue of South China Sea, saying it is of vital importance to the sound and stable development of China-Vietnam relations.He noted that China and Vietnam have established a negotiation mechanism to solve the issue, and he hoped the two countries would discuss and sign an agreement on basic principles guiding the solution to the issues of the sea as early as possible.Dung agreed with Wen's remarks.Expressing the high importance China placed on the summits, Wen said China would strengthen communication and coordination with Vietnam and work with all sides concerned to push forward East Asian cooperation.Wen said friendship and cooperation have remained the mainstream of China-Vietnam relations since the establishment of the bilateral diplomatic ties 60 years ago. BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong visited Chinese-American Nobel physics laureate Yang Chen-ning at Tsinghua University in Beijing on Friday.Friday is Yang's 88th birthday and Liu extended her congratulations to Yang and praised his years of efforts in promoting China's education.Yang had made important contributions in fostering young Chinese talent and promoting the country's educational development as well as academic exchanges and cooperation between China and the United States.His efforts were even more remarkable after 2003 when he returned and settled in China.Liu discussed with Yang about China's education reform and the Outline of the National Plan for Medium-and Long-term Educational Reform and Development.Education Minister Yuan Guiren accompanied Liu on the visit.
