On Monday, electors gathered to formally affirm that President-elect Joe Biden was indeed the victor of the 2020 Presidential Election.During his Electoral College victory speech Monday night in Wilmington, Delaware, Biden spoke about how all Americans have the right to have their vote counted."In America, politicians don't take power," Biden said during his speech. "People grant power to them. The flame of democracy was lit in this nation a long time ago. And we now know nothing, not even a pandemic or an abuse of power, can extinguish that flame."He also praised election officials, who Biden said endured threats of violence and verbal abuse."One of the extraordinary things we saw this year was that everyday Americans, our friends and our neighbors, often volunteers, Democrats, Republicans, Independents, demonstrating absolute courage, they showed a deep and unwavering faith in and a commitment to the law," Biden said. Voting took place throughout the country at various times Monday. Vermont was the first state to cast electoral votes when submitted its three votes for Biden. Tennessee followed shortly after by submitting its 11 votes for Trump.As of 5:30 p.m. ET, 534 out of the 538 Electoral Votes had been cast. Biden is expected to get 306 votes to Trump's 232 based on the results of the presidential election.Hawaii is the last state to cast their Electoral College votes, at 7 p.m. ET. Its 4 votes are expected to go to Biden. The Electoral College votes are formally counted during a joint session of Congress on January 6. Typically, the Electoral College vote is little more than a rubber stamp approval of the November election. Brian Kemp, a Republican, to appoint a special session of the state legislator in the hopes of appointing new Electoral College voters — and threatening not to campaign for two Republican Senators that are up for re-election in January. On October 11, people around the world recognize International Day of the Girl. The Girl Scouts of America are celebrating with this year's National Gold Award Girl Scouts. These ten girls are making big waves across the country."For my Gold Award, I developed an oral healthcare model with three foundational pillars; education, prevention and treatment targeting oral healthcare inequalities in low income communities in Georgia and the Bhalswa Slums District in India," said Siya K., one of the ten girls awarded the prestigious National Gold Award from the Girl Scouts of America. She's educated 5,000 families across five states on dental health and distributed 130,000 dental supplies in Georgia and India. She was motivated to research preventative measures for oral cancer after she lost her grandmother to the disease several years ago."My health model has been embraced by dental offices, state dental associations, national mobile programs and schools in two countries. And to kind of further the reach of Help a Child Smile, I created a non-profit called Mila Foundation to kind of support the oral healthcare services provided by Help a Child Smile," said Siya K.This year's National Gold Award Girl Scouts have done everything from create theater access for children with disabilities to engineer an insulin calculator app. Julia T. lobbied for menstrual equity in her home state of Colorado."Definitely, it began within my own high school where I saw a lot of girls struggling to handle their menstrual cycles with dignity and efficiency in the learning environment. Because of varying incomes in our school and also the lack of accessibility, it made it so that girls had a hard time being able to talk about such private matters with their teachers. So, they would have to leave school and miss class," said Julia T.Julia was working with her local legislator to expand access to menstrual products in schools. The bill went to the House Committee for Education before the pandemic. She hopes to bring it back before legislators in the future. "What I love about the Gold Award is it's really a culmination of the Girl Scout experience, because at every level girls are taught to take agency and action on issues they care about. With the Gold Award, it's the highest award you can earn in Girl Scouts," said Kelly Parisi, the VP of Executive and Brand Communications at the Girl Scouts of the USA. Parisi says Gold Award Girl Scouts are tasked with developing long standing change for an issue they care about.Each council across the country submits three of their most exceptional Gold Award Girl Scouts and a panel chooses the top ten. "We are so proud of these ten National Gold Award Girl Scouts but we are equally as proud of thousands of girls across the country who earned their Gold Award and are looking to take action on issues in their community they care about," said Parisi.Julia and Siya hope their achievements inspire other girls across the country to work hard and recognize the impact they can have on the world. "The biggest thing I would say is dream big. Don't think that your issue is too big to solve. Just focus on taking small steps at a time. Don't be afraid in reaching out to people and connecting with people because people are more than willing to help," said Siya."I believe policy makers want to hear from you on the issues that affect you and your demographic so just taking advantage of being a youth and having that sort of power where people want to hear your voice on how matters affect you and just be incredibly persistent in the face of opposition," said Julia.As part of earning a National Gold Award, these ten girl scouts will also receive tens of thousands of dollars in college scholarship money. 3767

OAKLAND, Tenn. – A dog that recently turned 20 years old is believed to be the oldest living golden retriever in the world.The retriever, named August or “Augie,” lives in Oakland, Tennessee, with her owners, Jennifer and Steve Hetterscheidt.The Hetterscheidts adopted Augie when she was 14 from the Golden Retriever Rescue Southern Nevada, which Jennifer co-founded before retiring and moving to Tennessee.On April 24, the family celebrated Augie’s 20th birthday, a major milestone, because experts say the average golden retriever lives to be about 10 to 12 years old.They went all out for the celebration, giving Augie a special carrot cake and having a banner made to wish her a happy birthday. She was also surrounded by the family’s three other retrievers, whose ages range between 7 and 10.As Augie got older, Jennifer told the Today Show that she did a little research to see what the age was of the oldest golden retriever. She came across the GoldenHeart Golden Retriever Rescue’s website, which said the oldest was believed to be 19 years old. Jennifer then contacted the rescue to share Augie’s story.On June 20, the Maryland-based rescue announced that “Augie is the oldest golden retriever in history!” 1224

Nostalgia lovers can kindly rewind to a time when Blockbuster Video reigned supreme.On Tuesday, the once defunct Blockbuster Video Twitter account came out of a six-year hibernation to announce that the last remaining Blockbuster in Oregon can be rented through Airbnb. The store will be split into three units, with each one selling for per night, but the catch is it’s only open to residents of Deschutes County, Oregon, where the final Blockbuster Video remains.Blockbuster will provide snacks, soft drinks and pizza with the units. The units will also have access to a huge collection of Blockbuster’s stock.The units are available for up to four people, but can only be rented for one night per family.Following three nights of stays, the Oregon Blockbuster will allow visitors to see the units during regular business hours for a limited time.The Bend, Oregon, Blockbuster became the final location open of the mega video rental chain in 2018 after a pair of Alaska locations closed. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Heavy rains and slick roads may have contributed to a fatal motorcycle crash in Oceanside.A 22-year-old man riding a Yamaha motorcycle on northbound Interstate 5 just south of State Route 76 crashed just after 10 p.m. Friday, just as lightning, thunder, and heavy rain pounded the area, according to California Highway Patrol.The man was transitioning from NB I-5 to the SR-76 off-ramp when he veered off the side of the road and up a dirt embankment.
