SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Convoy Street already seems like its own neighborhood to many, always bustling with locals at its numerous Asian restaurants and shops.Thursday, community business leaders continued their efforts to put Convoy Street firmly on San Diego's map with a live mural painting art show.The mural, created by local artist Espa?a Garcia Feucht, covers the side of Cross Street Chicken and Beer and was painted live in tandem with Taiko drummers playing and other artists showcasing their work outside the restaurant. District 6 Councilmember Chris Cate was also in attendance to herald in the new neighborhood feature.RELATED: 10 must-eat restaurants on San Diego's Convoy StreetTommy Nguyen, owner of Cross Street, said the mural is just the first step in local efforts to get Convoy Street its own neighborhood sign, like ones currently over the Gaslamp Quarter and University Heights."Knowing that it'll take some time for the physical arch to go up, we decided to take matters into our own hands and put up a 'Welcome to Convoy' arch ourselves on our mural wall," Nguyen said. "I truly believe that Convoy is big enough to have it's own neighborhood arch."The mural features a rooster holding a beer (a tip of the hat to the region's craft beer scene and the restaurant the mural sits on) with the phrase "made in San Diego" underneath. I want people to recognize this mural eventually and say, 'oh yeah, that’s in Kearny Mesa.'"Our hope is to raise awareness enough for [people] who are not familiar with Kearny Mesa/Convoy to come to this area and explore for themselves." 2028

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Around the world in eight and a half years, one couple returns to San Diego after almost a decade of sailing. Neal Schneider and his wife Ruth left San Diego on their 48-foot sailboat in December 2010. Schneider tells 10News, “I felt like there was an invisible hand grabbing the front of my shirt saying come on you got to do this.” He initially thought it would take them four years to circumnavigate. 38 countries and 49,000 miles later, they ended up taking a little longer. Their path took them to Mexico, French Polynesia, Tonga, New Zealand, Fiji, Thailand, and Africa and beyond. In fact, they decided to spend one whole year living in Thailand. During their adventures there were times where they flew back to the United States. Two of their children got married and they attended the weddings. As the couple prepares for the final leg of their trip, Schneider says, “we are very excited on the verge of being emotional”. An eye-opening experience for the Schneiders, “what a fabulous world this is, but I’ll tell you, I think one of our favorite places in all the places is San Diego.” They are expected to arrive Tuesday evening and dock at San Diego Yacht Club. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - County health officials are encouraging local women to get vaccinated for "whooping cough" amid a possible epidemic.The county says pertussis, commonly known as "whooping cough," could turn into a possible local epidemic based on historical patterns."It’s critical for pregnant women and people who come into close contact with young infants to get vaccinated," Wilma Wooten, County public health officer, said. "Newborns are very susceptible to whooping cough because they are too young to be fully vaccinated. It is vital for pregnant women to be vaccinated in the third trimester to give protection to their unborn infants."So far in 2018, there have been 56 confirmed cases of pertussis.RELATED: This app says it can help you stay flu-freeLast year, San Diego County recorded at least 1,154 cases, the highest of any county in California. Wooten said the high numbers were partially attributed to reporting methods."Pertussis activity in our region appears to higher than the rest of the state, but much of this is due to the excellent detection and reporting of this potentially deadly disease by San Diego pediatricians and family physicians," Wooten said.Pertussis is a cyclical disease that peaks every three to five years, according to health officials. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Authorities are searching for a person suspected of starting a trash can fire that scorched the side of a Normal Heights home early Thursday morning.At around 2 a.m., San Diego Fire-Rescue crews were called to the 3300 block of Meade Avenue in response to a trash can on fire next to a house.Some residents told ABC 10News they heard noises at the trash cans and the saw a fire begin to ignite.Screams from residents apparently scared off a person believed to have sparked the blaze.As fire crews arrived, flames from the trash can burned the side of one house. The fire was quickly knocked down before it could engulf the entire home.ABC 10News learned one person was displaced due to the fire; no injuries were reported.A description of the person suspected of starting the fire was not immediately available.Arson investigators are involved in the fire probe. 889

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Car owners at a senior community in University City woke up to a messy surprise Tuesday morning. Louise, who asked 10news not to identity her, went to her SUV which was parked on Kantor Street, and her heart sank."I walked to my car and saw that the window had been burst.  It was terrifying," said Louise.Glass was everywhere and inside her vehicle was another mess.  Her glove compartment had been tossed, her insurance and registration scattered.  Nothing was missing, but Louise is nervous."Very afraid of the personal information now they know what address I'm actually at," said Louise.It appears someone took a bat or something like that to bash the window, before unlocking their passenger door.  Louise is not the only victim.  Nearby there were more vehicles hit, some 14 in all.  The windows on those vehicles were also shattered.  Some items were stolen and the repairs will cost hundreds of dollars for each incident."A lot of people on fixed incomes.
