For the first time since July, the White House’s coronavirus task force delivered a briefing on Thursday as cases reach record levels throughout the US.President Donald Trump did not participate in Thursday's news briefing. The president has not had any public events this week. The coronavirus task force encouraged Americans to remain vigilant and practice social distancing guidelines as the virus spreads throughout the US.Dr. Anthony Fauci, the federal government’s top infectious disease expert, said that the “cavalry is coming.” He said recent developments of a pair of vaccines showing an effectiveness of 95% should give Americans confidence to get a vaccine once they become available.“The process of the speed did not compromise at all the safety nor did it compromised the scientific integrity,” Fauci said. “It was a reflection of extraordinary scientific advances in these types of vaccines which allowed us to do things in months that actually took years before but I really want to settle that concern that people have about that.”While the tone from the White House coronavirus task force was against lockdowns, states across the country have reimplemented some shutdowns of and limits to businesses. Notably, much of California will go under a curfew nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m."We will be getting vaccine doses to people who are high priority at the end of December," Fauci said. "We aren't talking about shutting down the country. We are talking about locking down. We are talking about simple public health measures that we all talked about mask wearing, distancing, avoiding congregate settings, doing things to the extent that we can outdoors versus indoors and if we do that we'll be able to hold things off until the vaccine comes."Vice President Mike Pence says that the US will have 100 million doses of a vaccine ready to begin distribution as soon as an emergency use authorization is granted. General Gustave Perna, who is leading the government's distribution efforts of a vaccine said that when an emergency use authorization is given, the first doses of a vaccine will be distributed within 24 hours. Pfizer says its vaccine candidate could seek emergency use authorization from the FDA as soon as Friday.Distribution will be a challenge as the leading coronavirus vaccines have to be stored at extremely cold conditions.Perna said that the federal government is working with states on setting up places for a vaccine to be availble. The vaccines can be distributed from hospitals down to a local Walgreens or CVS. "We will distribute the vaccine accordingly," Perna said. "We want the vaccines at the places where the American people are comfortable; at our hospitals, our doctors offices, CVS, Walgreens and the health care facilities, places where people are comfortable going. That's where we started"Thursday’s briefing comes on the same day that the CDC urged Americans not to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday and asked Americans to only celebrate the holiday with those in their household.Earlier this week, task force member Dr. Scott Atlas criticized public health experts for advising Americans not to celebrate Thanksgiving with family. Atlas’ stance is an outlier among experts.On Wednesday, the number of coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic passed 250,000 in the United States. On Wednesday alone, more than 1,800 deaths were reported throughout the US, marking the most in a single day since the spring. 3488

For the third time in three weeks, a major commercial airline flight was diverted mid-air because of a damaged window.The latest incident happened Sunday, when a JetBlue flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Tampa, Florida, was diverted because of damage to the plane's windscreen.The airline said the flight was diverted to Fort Lauderdale out of "an abundance of caution following a report of damage to one of the outer layers of the cockpit windscreen." The plane landed safely and the passengers were accommodated on another aircraft, JetBlue said.That incident comes about three weeks after a?fatal Southwest Airlines flight in which a jet engine failed midair and debris knocked out a cabin window.Jennifer Riordan, a philanthropist and Wells Fargo executive in New Mexico, was partially sucked out of the plane as other passengers struggled to pull her back into her seat. She was later pronounced dead from blunt impact trauma, a spokesman for the Philadelphia Department of Public Health said.Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board who looked into the failure said that one of the engine's 24 fan blades was missing.Despite the mid-air engine failure, Captain Tammie Jo Shults was able to safely pilot the flight in an emergency landing in Philadelphia.On May 2, a Southwest Airlines flight from Chicago to Newark, New Jersey, made an unplanned landing after a window cracked.Flight 957 landed safely at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Cory said. Southwest said the diversion was in response to a reported crack in the outer pane of a multi-pane window.Passenger Linda Holley texted her son Ryan with a picture of a damaged window."Window on plane cracked during flight. Landing in Cleveland to be safe. Everything ok but scary," one of her texts read.In another, she said: "Yes Southwest. Just heard loud noise. Very large crack with piece of window missing at bottom. Four hurricane names have been retired after a devastating 2017 hurricane season. The World Meteorological Organization's Hurricane Committee determined Harvey, Irma, Maria and Nate would be retired from the committee's list of rotating names. The names have been replaced by Harold, Idalia, Margot and Nigel. Names are retired if a hurricane is particularly destructive or costly. Damages from the 2017 hurricane season exceeded 0 billion in the United States alone while several hundred people died throughout the world from hurricanes in 2017, according to WMO. The 2017 hurricane season featured three category 4 hurricanes making landfall, including Harvey, Irma and Maria. Former ESPN president John Skipper says he abruptly resigned from the network late last year because he was being extorted by a cocaine dealer.In an in-depth interview with The Hollywood Report's James Andrew Miller, Skipper recounted his substance abuse issues and the decision to leave the network.Skipper told Miller that he used cocaine intermittently throughout his professional life. He says the habit began before he joined ESPN in 1997, but maintained that his drug use never interfered with his work, outside of "a missed plane and a few canceled morning appointments."Skipper also said he was "unusually clever" in finding ways to buy cocaine so as not to attract attention to himself. That changed in December, when he says someone he had not dealt with before attempted to extort him for purchasing drugs."It turned out I wasn’t careful this time," Skipper told Miller.Skipper immediately informed Disney CEO Bob Iger of the threat."When I discussed it with Bob, he and I agreed that I had placed the company in an untenable position and as a result, I should resign," Skipper told Miller.On Dec. 18, Skipper shocked ESPN employees by announcing his resignation, citing substance abuse issues. Food insecurity has skyrocketed in communities across the country during the pandemic. Rural communities have been hit especially hard. In Louisiana, which the highest-ranked state for food insecurity for children and the fourth-ranked state in food insecurity for seniors, food banks are becoming more important than ever before.For grandmother Mary O'Neal, she's raising her 8-year-old grandson on her own. Without help from her local food bank, she said she doesn't know how they would get by.Her husband passed away a couple of years ago, which cut their fixed income in half. Since then, O'Neal said she's really had to save."I had to pick up, and we had to start doing things different," said O'Neal. That loss was made worse when a tornado ripped through their northeast Louisiana home."I said, 'You know, Lord, you’ve sent me through the biggest storm of my life. This is just another storm. You brought me through the other one, and you’re going to bring me through this one,'" she said.But O'Neal said she never imagined the storm coronavirus would bring right into her kitchen. Food was running short—not only for her, but for her diabetic grandson, so she visited The Care and Hope Ministry, a small church turned community food bank, for some help."For us, it’s more than just than a box of food," said Pam Walker, who runs the food distribution. "It’s relationships, it’s loving on people, it’s hope, hope in a time of despair."Hope is just what O'Neal needed, especially after her grandson's school, and several in the area, stopped sending home-packed lunches while students were doing remote learning."That was all cut out the last of June. They didn’t give any more lunches," said O'Neal. Those programs running dry made mealtime that much tougher on O'Neal and so many others."Our school system is a completely Title 1 school system, so every child in our school system gets free lunch," said Walker.Poverty is high across most of Louisiana and in many rural communities across the country, contributing greatly to food insecurity. 2059
