SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Rideshare drivers all over California are on strike protesting recent pay cuts by both Uber and Lyft. A small but vocal group of the drivers gathered at the San Diego airport Monday morning, opting to take part in a statewide protest against the companies they say are taking money out of their pockets. Recently, Uber announced it would be cutting drivers wage from 80 cents per mile to 60 cents. Workers say that’s on top of other cuts they’ve dealt with over the years. Drivers who spoke with 10News say other states like New York require companies to pay a minimum rate of more than per hour. Uber and Lyft both issued statements after the protest.Uber said in part, “…we're introducing a new Quest promotion feature, while also changing the per minute, per mile and minimum fare rates. These changes will make rates comparable to where they were in September."Lyft told 10News: "We are always open to conversations around how we can make Lyft better for drivers, but what we hear from the majority is that this is a flexible option that works for them." 1090

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County officials are once again sounding the alarm, asking San Diegans to follow all health guidelines to slow the spread of COVID-19.On Wednesday, local leaders held a press conference to discuss the county's latest numbers and their placement on the state's colored tier system. The county stayed in the red tier, but was dangerously close to slipping into the more restrictive purple tier. In fact, County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten said San Diego County was only two cases away from the purple tier."Yesterday we dodged a bullet. We could not have gotten any closer without tripping into the purple tier," County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said at Wednesday's press conference. "But we don't want to live or die on the tiers by how many tests we've done."The county's unadjusted case rate is 7.7, while the adjusted rate is 7.0. Officials said the county's testing efforts allowed for that adjusted number. The county's health equity metric also improved, going down from 5.7% to 5.5%; the metric looks at the most undeserved, impacted communities.On Wednesday, health officials reported 263 new COVID-19 infections and six additional deaths, raising the region's cumulative totals to 53,263 cases and 863 fatalities.Six new community outbreaks were also reported Wednesday, two in businesses, two in restaurants, one in a restaurant/bar setting and one in a healthcare setting. In the past seven days, 32 community outbreaks were confirmed, well above the trigger of seven or more in a week's time.A community outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households over the past 14 days.Wooten said the best way to keep cases down is to continue following all health guidelines in place, like wearing a mask, staying home if you're sick, social distancing and avoiding indoor gatherings. The county is also looking ahead to Election Day, urging San Diegans to vote via mail-in ballot, but also reassuring in-person voters that it will be safe to cast a ballot. County Registrar of Voters Michael Vu is asking all in-person voters to wear a mask and be patient on Election Day. Vu said all 4,500 election workers will undergo two days of training before the election so they can handle sanitization procedures and how to direct crowds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego is bringing back its Portable Pool program to help teach children water safety skills. The program will officially open at City Heights Recreation Center starting June 17. While pools are installed, the city will provide free, week-long water safety skills classed for children ages 3 through 15. According to the city, the classes can accommodate as many as 100 children per week with six to 10 children in each class. “Drowning is one of the leading causes of death in children ages one to 14 and is the leading cause of accidental injury death for children ages one to four years old,” said Nicole McNeil, Supervising Recreation Specialist for the City’s Aquatics Program. “The City is offering these important free classes to help young children learn basic swimming skills to keep them safe around pools and prevent unnecessary drowning tragedies.”An additional portable pool will be installed at the Robert Egger Sr./South Bay Recreation Center starting July 1. The portable pools will be in place for three weeks before being moved to facilities in Paradise Hills, Linda Vista and Ocean Beach recreational centers. Registration for Portable Pools is on a first-come, first-served basis. To enroll, parents must fill out an ActiveNet form and return it to the recreation center where the portable pool is located. The program was created in 1968 and provides water safety training to children who don’t live near the city’s 13 municipal pools.
