Some popular pavilions, including the Oil Pavilion and Space Home Pavilion, stopped visitors from queuing up by 4 or 5 p.m. because of the large crowds.Many visitors could only walk around, take pictures outside of pavilions, or have picnics at rest area. Further, all parades were canceled due to the large number of visitors.Zhou Qian and Dai Shishi from Hangzhou described the long queues as "horrible". But Zhou said she had been prepared for the situation as they visited seven pavilions, including the Egyptian and Spanish pavilions.A visitor surnamed Zhang and her daughter, a high school student in Shanghai, entered the site at 11 a.m. but had only visited three pavilions by 6:30 p.m."And all of them are small ones. GUANGZHOU, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- China's first inter-city subway, linking two southern China cities hosting the 2010 Asian Games, started operations Wednesday.The 21-kilometer Guangfo Line connects Guangzhou City with Foshan City, both in the manufacturing hub of the Pearl River Delta region in Guangdong Province.Riders on the subway will find that the travel time between the two cities has been reduced from 90 minutes to 30 minutes, said sources with the subway company Guangzhou Metro.The line has 14 stations and a ride from end to end costs only six yuan (less than one U.S. dollar).Local authorities have been pushing for the increased integration of cities in the Pearl River Delta and consider the operation of the Guangfo Line a big step in that direction.The subway was purposely opened one week prior to the start of the 2010 Asian Games. BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- China launched a large-scale tree-planting program against soil-erosion along the Three-Gorge Dam section of the country's largest Yangtze River Friday, with two launching ceremonies held in Beijing and Chongqing, simultaneously.The program is aimed to raise funds from individual and institutional donors for planting trees on 3.8 million mu (253,333 hectares) on the banks of the Yangtze River in Chongqing.Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), is the honorary chairman of the organizational committee of the program.Vice Premier Hui Liangyu and Chongqing Party chief Bo Xilai attended and addressed the ceremony in Beijing.Hui spoke highly of the tree-planting program, saying that it would be new probe for the bio-environmental protection of major rivers in the country as well as a new, great contribution to the afforestation and protection of the Yangtze River.The vice premier recognized that the Yangtze River is still facing severe bio-environmental deterioration and soil erosion, though notable achievements have been made in the afforestation efforts along the river in the past decades.In his speech, Bo pledged that Chongqing will take three to five years to increase the forest coverage in the dam area to 65 percent, from the present 22.2 percent.
