BEIJING, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese leaders including President Hu Jintao on Wednesday watched Peking Opera at the National Center for the Performing Arts in a gala to mark the New Year.     Top legislator Wu Bangguo, top political advisor Jia Qinglin, and other senior leaders including Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang also watched the performance together with nearly 1,000audience.     The programs include excerpts from modern Peking Opera "The Red Lantern" and a series of traditional works such as "Si Lang Tan Mu", or "The fourth son visits his mother". WASHINGTON, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- The military-to-military ties between the United States and China have a vital role to play in the development of an active, cooperative and comprehensive bilateral relationship, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told retired generals from both countries here on Thursday.     In a meeting with participants of an exchange forum between retired generals of the two countries, Clinton said President Barack Obama attaches great importance to the growth of interactions between the two militaries. Exchanges between retired generals of the two militaries, Clinton said, could play an important role in facilitating a healthy development of military-to-military relationship between the United States and China.     Kurt Campbell, assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, said at a separate meeting with the retired generals that the Obama administration fully supports exchanges of this kind and hopes that such interactions could continue on a regular basis.     Through in-depth and extensive dialogues of this kind, Campbell said, the two militaries could increase mutual understanding and trust and promote growth of constructive cooperation between the two sides.     Xiong Guangkai, former vice-chief of general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, is heading the Chinese delegation.

BEIJING, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top political advisor Jia Qinglin attended a symposium here on Wednesday to mark the 60th anniversary of the uprising of two air carriers in Hong Kong in 1949.     On Nov. 9, 1949, a total of 12 aircraft from the carriers flew from Hong Kong to Beijing and Tianjin on the Chinese mainland during the uprising, a move embraced by the New China. Mao Zedong called it "a very patriotic action of great significance."     Du Qinglin, head of the United Front Work Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said the precious spirit of the uprising should be inherited and promoted, to encourage all the Chinese to make unswerving contributions to the rejuvenation of the nation.

SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- President Barack Obama said here Monday that the United States would further expand its youth exchanges with China by dramatically expanding the number of students studying here to 100,000.     Obama said during a dialogue with Chinese students in Shanghai Science and Technology Museum Monday afternoon that young people in China and U.S. are the best ambassadors and that cooperation between the countries should go beyond the governments.     "These exchanges mark a clear commitment to build ties among our people, as surely as you will help us determine the destiny of21st century," he said.     Shanghai was the first leg of Obama's maiden trip to China on Nov. 15-18 since he took office in January.     "I believe strongly that cooperation must grow beyond our government. It must be rooted in our people, in the studies we share, in the business we do, in the knowledge that we gain, and even in the sports we play, and these bridges must be built by men and women just like you, and your counterparts in America," Obama told an audience of about 600 university students in Shanghai.     "I am absolutely confident that America has no better ambassadors to offer than our young people, for they just like you are filled with talent, energy and optimism about the history that is yet to be written.     "So let this be the next step in the steady pursuit of cooperation between our two nations and the world," Obama said.     After delivering the opening remarks, Obama took questions from students as well as the Chinese online community, covering a wide range of topics such as Sino-U.S. cooperation, cross-Strait relations and anti-terrorism in the U.S..     The White House website Sunday posted a notice of Obama's meeting with Chinese youth, saying that holding the event in Shanghai was symbolic as the Shanghai Communiqué was announced here and helped pave the way for normalization and the first 30 years of formal diplomatic relations.     "If there is one thing we can take from today's dialogue, I hope that it is a commitment to continue this dialogue going forward," Obama said in his speech.

BEIJING, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's foreign trade in 2009 dropped 13.9 percent from a year earlier to 2.21 trillion U.S. dollars and its trade surplus last year slid 34.2 percent year on year to 196.1 billion U.S. dollars, according to figures released Sunday by the General Administration of Customs (GAC).     In breakdown, China's exports in 2009 stood at 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars, down 16 percent from in 2008, and imports reached 1.01 trillion U.S. dollars, down 11.2 percent from a year earlier, said the GAC.     In December 2009, monthly trade amounted to 243 billion U.S. dollars, which represented a year-on-year increase of 32.7 percent and a month-to-month rise of 16.7 percent.     Last month, China's exports were worth 130.7 billion U.S. dollars, up 17.7 percent from a year earlier. December's imports hit record monthly high to reach 112.3 billion U.S. dollars, up 55.9 percent from the same period of 2008, according to the GAC.
