SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Father Joe’s Villages will be making changes to how they serve their annual Thanksgiving meal due to the pandemic.Deacon Jim Vargas says the meals will be prepared ‘to go’ and given to people outdoors in their courtyard. As a result, they plan on needing fewer volunteers this year. Those that will be there to give out the meals will be wearing masks and practicing social distancing.Vargas says there is greater food insecurity in the community this year because of the pandemic. As a result, they are preparing more food.“We typically serve about 700 or so. We’re prepared to serve close to a thousand this year because we know there’s an increased need,” Vargas said.Anyone receiving a meal will also receive a backpack that comes with a face covering, hand sanitizer, and hygiene kits.The pandemic is also impacting their annual 5K, which is held at Balboa Park on Thanksgiving Day. This year, the event will be virtual, and Vargas says registration for the event is down. That concerns Vargas because it is their second-largest fundraiser for the year, which brings in about 0,000 for food services. 1135

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of families of babies once cared for in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Sharp Mary Birch were reunited with their medical teams on Saturday.Sharp Mary Birch hosted its annual NICU Little Graduates Reunion at NTC Park at Liberty Station. The hospital holds the event each fall. The event is an opportunity for past NICU families to reunite with the doctors, nurses and team members who cared for them during their stay and celebrate their child’s health.Aldy and Alan Serrano went with their son, Xander. Xander weighed just 14 ounces when he was born in 2016. Xander spent nearly four months in the NICU at Sharp Mary Birch. Besides seeing doctors and nurses, the Serrano's are thankful to be reunited with other families who also had children in the NICU during that time."When you're going through it, it's very difficult to explain to other people how you're feeling and whats actually happening. It's nice to have somebody to relate to," Aldy said.They have made relationships that will last a lifetime."We have several friends we met during our NICU stay that are now like family," Aldy said. "The challenges in the NICU don't stop in the NICU. As they grow up, there are so many other things that can happen that they can relate to."Xander is now an active happy and healthy toddler. He will be two at the end of the month.The reunion event also had a bounce house, bubble station, music, costumed Storm Troopers and games for all ages to enjoy. Sharp Mary Birch offers a full range of maternity, neonatal, and women’s surgical services, and delivers more than 9,000 babies annually. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Family members are mourning the COVID-related death of an Olympic gold medalist and lifelong San Diegan.More than 4 decades ago, Arnie Robinson Jr. stood at the top of the Olympic podium."He was always so driven and so focused," said Arnie Robinson Jr.'s son, PaulPaul says his father first started feeling sick in mid-November."Labored breathing, coughing," said Paul.Robinson Jr. tested positive for coronavirus but after a week and a half, he started feeling better. A week later, on December 2, he was with a caregiver at this Skyline Hills home."Out of the blue, he struggled to take breaths," said Paul.That day, Robinson Jr. passed away at his home at the age of 72."You’re just in a state of shock and disbelief over how it happened," said Paul.It was disbelief and grief over a father and local sports legend.A high school track star at Morse High, Robinson Jr. went to San Diego Mesa College and San Diego State University, before winning a bronze medal in the long jump at the 1972 Olympics and a gold medal at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal."I think that’s one of the things that drove him. Wanting to achieve something really, really big ... setting it out there and making it happen," said Paul.That commitment was his calling card. He served in the Army and later, worked a track coach at Mesa College for three decades.In 2004, he was diagnosed with brain cancer, a grade 4 glioblastoma and given six months to live. He went through several round of chemo and radiation."After some research, a complete 180 on his diet. Looking back on it now, he saw it as another challenge," said Paul.Some 16 years later, he was in remission when he tested positive for COVID-19. Paul believes he contracted it from one of his caregivers, who also tested positive.His message to others: wear masks and take every precaution."Respect COVID for what it is. Once COVID comes and closes in, there’s nothing you can do," said Paul.Robinson Jr.'s family has started a Gofundme campaign in hopes of seeding projects related to youth sports. 2061

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dramatic dash camera video shows the moment two cars sped along San Diego’s State Route 94, leading one of the drivers to lose control and crash. The race happened Thursday just after 8 a.m. near the College Grove avenue exit of westbound SR-94. Video shows two sedans, an Audi and a BMW, drive up fast behind the witness' vehicle and pass him, before the BMW crashes into an unsuspecting driver.“Just a complete surprise,” said a witness who shared his video with 10News and requested to remain anonymous. The witness was taking his mother to the doctor when the sedans approached him from behind. “I just see them come out of nowhere and spin out, and runs into the back of the car,” said the witness. “In real time, I didn’t even see the other car.” “My first thought was, he was running from the cops,” the witness told 10News. The witness said the BMW driver involved in the crash stopped to check on the innocent victim, then went back across the road. No one was injured in the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP is investigating what officers say is possibly a racing crash. No arrests have been made. “Ain’t no real reason to go that fast with that many people on the road,” the witness said. “He completely totaled the back of that guy’s car and there could have been a kid back there.” 1348
