SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County Crime Stoppers and investigators from the North Coastal Sheriff's Station are looking for a woman, possibly pregnant, accused of using counterfeit bills at several businesses in North County.According to investigators, on April 14, 2018, a woman used a counterfeit 0 bill at Yogurt 101 located at 152 N. Highway 101 in Solana Beach.Investigators said on April 19, 2018, the same female suspect used another counterfeit 0 bill at Sun Splash located at 2673 Via De La Valle in Del Mar. They also said the woman is believed to have used a counterfeit 0 bill at a business in Carlsbad.The suspect is described as a 25 to 35-year-old Hispanic woman who stands between 5’4” and 5’6” tall. She has long, dark wavy hair and a tattoo on the right side of her upper chest. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Each year thousands of people in San Diego County face eviction from the place they call home. With rising rents and mortgage rates increasing, experts say that trend is about to get worse.“On November 5 my family and I are going to be homeless because it’s very hard to find places,” said Margot Velez.Velez is being evicted from her apartment, the complex she’s called home for nearly a decade. There’s a dispute about whether or not she’s paid the rent.RELATED: San Diego rents will continue to rise, according to USC rental forecastVelez said she’s up-to-date. She explained the owners of the complex claim she’s about ,000 behind, which is about three months rent.Team 10 investigator Adam Racusin asked Velez if there’s a possibility she ends up on the street.“Yeah, a real possibility,” she said.RELATED: More space for your money: Top neighborhoodsVelez is just one of the thousands in San Diego County facing an eviction.According to San Diego County Court records, there were more than 9,000 unlawful detainer cases filed last fiscal year. Those are eviction lawsuits.A report by the group Tenants Together, a statewide organization for tenants’ rights, stated landlords file an average of 166,337 eviction lawsuits annually in California, with a total of 499,010 households facing eviction in the three-year period. An estimated 1.5 million Californians faced court evictions over the last three years.RELATED:?Developer plans 300 new apartments in Otay Ranch"Evictions are on the [rise] in San Diego, and it's largely because there's just a depletion of rental stock,” said attorney Christian Curry with the Tenants Legal Center, a San Diego Law Firm. “Really, what it is is they get behind on their rent, and by the time they come to us usually they have the money to pay, but the landlord just won’t take it anymore."Curry said rents are going up and many people can't keep up, but in San Diego County, there are laws to help protect renters.The Tenants’ Right to Know regulations has a section that outlines termination of tenancy guidelines.RELATED: Housing swaps offer vacation savingsAccording to the regulations, a residential tenancy of more than two years duration shall not be terminated, nor shall its renewal be refused unless for things such as nonpayment of rent, the landlord intends to withdraw all rental units in all buildings or structures on a parcel of land from the rental market or the owner of blood relative plans to occupy the rental unit as their principal residence.If you’ve broken the rules and you haven’t been in your home for more than two years and you're facing eviction, there is a process for removal. According to Curry’s website, “After receiving an UNLAWFUL DETAINER [sic], the tenant/occupant must respond timely or lose the case. If you are personally served, you have only five calendar days to respond. If someone is served for you, you may have an additional 10 days. Weekends are counted but the last day to respond cannot land on a weekend (or holiday). If it does, the 'last day' carries over to the next business day. There are many defenses which can be raised.”Curry said tenants should know their rights and try to talk with the landlord ahead of time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivors live with an invisible injury, and its effects can be debilitating."I was not happy with myself, I was unhealthy, I was seeking all sorts of excitement and danger, I was drinking a whole heck of a lot, very angered, always in pain, migraines, physically and emotionally drained, unhealthy in so many ways," said Jimmy Works, a retired Marine Corps veteran.While his last deployment was in 2010, Works was only diagnosed with TBI this year despite suffering multiple head injuries in combat."It's part of life, it's a new reality," said Works. Works and other TBI survivors are now finding healing through LoveYourBrain Yoga, an evidence-based program now in dozens of states. "What's unique about the LoveYourBrain series is it's specifically for survivors of traumatic brain injuries and their caregivers," said Nancine Decherd, a facilitator for the program. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A man was arrested last month after allegedly using a body bag and gurney to steal from a deceased man’s home, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.On August 31st, around noon, sheriff’s deputies responded to a welfare check at a Spring Valley home and discovered a 60-year-old man dead inside.They say he died of natural causes and was transported to a mortuary by a contracted independent mortuary service.A couple of days later, the victim’s family reported missing items, including a gun and a safe. They then watched surveillance video from the home and learned it had been burglarized.The alleged burglary happened about 11 hours after deputies responded to the welfare check.In the video provided by the sheriff's department, you see a man, now identified as Sammy Willie Gates, rolling a gurney and body bag out of the house and into a white van.Detectives say the body bag was full of stolen items.Gates is the owner of Mortuary Transportation services, a contracted independent mortuary service; however, deputies say his company was not used to transport the victim’s body earlier.It’s unclear how Gates would have known the home was empty.Detectives from the Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s Station served a search warrant at Gates home in unincorporated El Cajon on September 9th.Inside, they found the victim’s safe and gun, along with 16 more firearms, two additional safes, jewelry, watches, war medals, comic books, thousands of dollars in collectible coins, and multiple personal identifying documents.Detectives also found a gurney and body bag matching the items in the video in Gate’s white utility van.He was arrested and charged with felonies, including Burglary of the First Degree and Receiving Stolen Property.Gates has prior felonies and is due in court for a preliminary hearing in January. 1857

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When a baby is born premature, a family’s world can be turned upside down. November is Prematurity Awareness Month. So, in recognition of that, the March of Dimes donated 50 care packages filled with everything from fuzzy socks to crossword puzzles, and tissues to parents who spend countless hours with their babies in the NICU. "Oh, is that funny?" says mom Vanessa holding her newborn. For a mother, anything her newborn does is a little miracle. "So this is our boy Ezekial,” says Vanessa showing off her little miracle. “He was 3 pounds, 10 ounces." But Ezekial is only one of three miracles. There's also sister Eleana, and little Evelyn. Triplets, three little miracles, born nine weeks premature at Sharp Mary Birch. "I spent three and a half weeks upstairs on the fourth floor, admitted. Um, it was hard,” adds Vanessa holding back tears. “I carried the triplets until 31 weeks and three days, and we've been here ever since, I'm going on about 40 days." Forty days and counting in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital. And Vanessa, with a two year old at home already, is here six to nine hours a day. "I come between 10 and 11, and I'll leave about 5 or 6. It just depends. Sometimes it's just hard to leave," says Vanessa. On this day, the March of Dimes is here delivering care packages. A little comfort for parents trying to navigate the emotional roller coaster of life in the NICU. "It's great, the nurses love our babies, and the doctors are amazing,” says Vanessa. “It's just some days are hard because this is what you come to every day. And every day I just want to hear, 'Your babies are ready to go home.'" That day will come, just like it did for Kristina and Mia. "She was born on July 31st, and she was supposed to be born on November 3rd. She was born 1 pound and 9 ounces," says mother Kristina holding her little Mia tight. Mia was 14 weeks premature. "This kind of puts it into perspective of how small she was,” says Kristina showing a picture on her phone. “That's my husband’s finger, and that's her little hand. Her fingers don't even wrap around the tip of his finger." The difficulty of having to leave your baby in the hospital, and the trust that a parent has to have in the nurses who care for them is overwhelming and at the same time, very comforting. “Yes, it is extremely overwhelming, depressing,” says Kristina. “But you bond with these people here and they become family, they really do. That's why I’m back here today to visit my primary nurse. We will always be grateful for everything they did for us here." Mia was part of a March of Dimes study when she was in the NICU at Sharp Mary Birch. Each year more than 22 thousand babies never make it out of the NICU because of complications with premature birth.
