SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An El Cajon mother is searching for clues after her teenage son was brutally beaten and mugged in the East Village.Two Tuesdays ago, Sarah Swift-Farrow got the call every mother dreads. Her 19-year-old son, Titan Mellor, was in the ER and hurt badly."My heart dropped ... just a hopeless feeling," said Swift-Farrow.She believes around 2 p.m., her son, a Grossmont College student, was headed to the Family Health Centers clinic in the East Village, applying for some sort of state assistance, when it happened. Swift-Farrow learned details from the paramedics' report."He was attacked from behind by a group of people, hit in the back of the head with a glass bottle. He fell to the ground, was repeatedly punched, and lost consciousness. Then he was kicked in the face for an unknown duration of time," said Swift-Farrow.Swift-Farrow says the attackers took his keys, phone, and wallet, charging thousands of dollars in purchases on his credit cards during the next few days. As for Mellor, he suffered a concussion and a host of severe injuries."Multiple fractures in his eye socket, his nose, above the mouth, behind his ear and in the back of his head," said Swift-Farrow.She says his road to recovery won't be an easy one. His memory of the attack remains hazy."He remembers a group of six to eight males yelling at him, and then getting hit from behind," said Swift-Farrow.Swift-Farrow is making a plea for tips to help police fill in the missing details."They need to be caught because my son deserves justice, and I don’t want this to happen to anyone else," said Swift-Farrow.She says the first charge on the stolen credit card was at the nearby MTS stop. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A unique way to watch movies outdoors is coming to San Diego's waters.Floating Cinema is coming to San Diego on Sept. 2 - 6, organizers say. Tickets will go on sale here.The cinema will include 12 to 24 mini boats that can hold up to eight people per boat. Tickets will require individuals to purchase the entire boat to make sure groups are seated with friends and family only, and to allow for distancing between boats.Throughout the week, the cinema will screen a mix between golden oldies and new releases that will be announced when tickets go on sale. Popcorn will be offered for free, while other movie snacks and drinks will be made available for purchase.Ticket options and movie screening details will be released closer to the event. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Airports across the nation saw more than 6 million travelers Thanksgiving weekend, concerning medical professionals.Dr. Davey Smith, Chief of Infectious Diseases at UC San Diego, is worried those who gathered with people outside their household will contract the coronavirus."The infection will go on to spread to their household members, other people they work with, etc., so we'll see more cases on top of more cases," Smith said.San Diego has been in the middle of a surge, with climbing coronavirus cases steeper than we saw in July. Smith said Thanksgiving gatherings could bring a spike on top of it all."It gets actually a little bit worse, so heading into Christmas, we can start seeing our cases rise, and Christmas is an even longer holiday with more opportunities for gathering and if they're not going to be socially distancing I can just see how this piles on," Smith said.Just up the freeway, Los Angeles will see more restrictions Monday, limiting retail capacities, closing playgrounds and prohibiting any gatherings with those outside your household."They might be telling us what's going to happen to us soon. I hope that's not the case, but I do worry they are the canary in the coal mine," he said.The density of cases makes it even more important to take precautions like wearing a mask, washing your hands and keeping your distance. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Amid rising health care costs, some San Diegans are turning to telehealth appointments. On a Monday afternoon, young Josephine sits in an exam room. She's come down with cold-like symptoms after recovering from enlarged tonsils. So her mom, Josie Ruiz, brought her to their neighborhood clinic, La Maestra Community Health Center in City Heights. For this appointment, one doctor is waiting in the exam room, and another is on a computer screen.Dr. Anthony Magit is an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist and pediatrician at Rady Children's Hospital. As he watches from his office, the clinic's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Javier Rodriguez, conducts an exam. Cameras and camera-equipped scopes feed real-time data to the specialist, who then asks questions. The exam is part of La Maestra's telehealth program, which offers virtual appointments to underserved patients."Before telehealth, my previous appointments ... some of them I had to cancel or reschedule," said Ruiz.Ruiz is a single mom who works full time."This is great because in my case I don't have to request a day off to take her to the hospital, which I can't afford to do," said Ruiz.Most of the patients at this clinic don't own cars. For them, getting to Rady Children's Hospital means hours on buses, which can lead to major issues related to work and child care.Six years ago, doctors at the clinic discovered many referrals to Rady Children's Hospital weren't showing up. That has changed. No-show rates went from about 50% to 13% within two years. Across the county, other hospitals are tuning in to telemedicine, from home appointments for rural patients to consultations with specialists across the country.
