BILOXI, Miss. – In the lobby of one Mississippi hotel, people aren’t the only ones checking in and out – so are the dogs. “They see that cage. They're like, ‘What is it?’” said the hotel’s director of sales, Teresa Johnston. The gazebo-like kennel is the temporary home for Basil, a 6-month-old terrier mix up for adoption from a local shelter and ready for checkout in the hotel’s lobby. “The guest just gives us their room number and the sweet little puppy goes up,” Johnston said. If the guest wants to adopt them, the dog goes home with them upon checkout. It’s part of a partnership between this Home2 Suites hotel near Biloxi, and the Humane Society of South Mississippi. The idea is Johnston’s brainchild. “It's that simple,” she said. “And they've given us the ability to adopt right from the property.” The hotel hosts one shelter dog at a time; all are already spayed and neutered. It’s an out-of-the box effort to try to bring down overcrowding at the local animal shelter. “We have to go out into our community and get a little bit more involved in ways that people wouldn't really associate an animal shelter with,” said Bianca Janik, with the Humane Society of South Mississippi. “And so that's a big part of why this program is so successful, is because they don't expect to see a shelter dog.” Since the program began late last year, more than 30 dogs have been adopted at the hotel by people who fell for those puppy dog eyes. The hotel is seeing an added benefit, too. “A lot of people stay at this hotel because of this program,” Johnston said. “And a lot of people spread the love.” Puppy love, that is.In addition to the hotel in Biloxi, another hotel in Mississippi has also started a similar dog adoption program. 1751

LINWOOD, Kan. – A former animal control officer is fighting with the City of Linwood, Kansas, for a family pet — a pet pot-bellied pig. His name is Dude and he's a 6-year-old Juliana pot-bellied pig. He's the newest member of Bailey Parker's menagerie at her home. He shares the yard with two ducks, four chickens, and occasionally the family's two dogs and cat. "I talk to them all like they're my children. Like, this is my family," Parker said. Dude even comes inside the house, too. Parker said he's more intelligent than her dogs, which the general public doesn't realize. Parker adopted him a few months ago from a goat farm, where he wasn't getting the specific care he needed. According to the City, Dude is livestock and not allowed inside city limits. "I would have never brought him in if I thought he was livestock or swine. A pot-bellied pig is not livestock," Parker said. She's asking the City to amend the ordinance or have the City issue her a special permit. The City refused a few months ago, but Parker and her attorneys returned to the city council meeting on Dec. 17. The City again denied the request and now Parker's attorneys, Tristen Woods and Lauren Kruskall, are taking the City to court in January. If they lose a bench trial, Woods said they will take it further to a jury trial in Leavenworth County. "At some point, we felt as a city we have to draw the line somewhere, otherwise you're going to start seeing people with horses and cows and sheep and everything else saying they're pets," said Brian Christenson, mayor of Linwood. Christenson said he's not against the pig, but laws are laws. The City recently amended the same animal control ordinance to allow pit bulls and chickens, of which Christenson said Parker has taken advantage. "The biggest problem we have, we don't have the resources, the animal control, all the things we would have to start adding these exotic animals," Christenson said. Not long after Parker adopted him, Dude got out of the yard and wandered to the park across the street because her kids accidentally left the fence open. Christenson said it took four people two hours to wrangle the pig, but Parker said it wasn't a big deal and she has since made provisions to prevent it from happening again. "We don't have animal control officers. We don't know what kind of medicines [pigs] have, what shots they're supposed to have," said Christenson. "It's just more work added that we'd have to do." Parker said Dude is well taken care of and isn't a nuisance. "If I have the means to give them something, I want to be able to help them and I don’t think I should be told what I can and can’t have in my backyard," said Parker. Parker has gathered around 50 signatures on a permit from people who support her request. Nearby DeSoto, Kansas, allows pot-bellied pigs as pets. Kansas City, Missouri, allows pot-bellied pigs, too. Bonner Springs doesn't have any language on the books about pot-bellied pigs, but the city council is taking up the topic at its next meeting on Jan. 13. Eudora and Olathe don't have language on pot-bellied pigs, either. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed on a Winnipeg radio station that the Canada-U.S. border would remain closed to non-essential travel until the United States lowers its COVID-19 infections. In September, it was announced that the border would reopen on Oct. 21. However, the steady increase of positive COVID-19 cases – which has reached 7.9 million, according to data from John's Hopkins – has extended the reopening date. There are now over 200,000 deaths due to the virus, the CDC reports. “We have committed to keeping Canadians safe and we keep extending the border closures because the States is not in a place where we would feel comfortable reopening those borders,” Trudeau told the radio station, as reported in Bloomberg. “We will continue to make sure that Canadian safety is top of mind when we move forward. We see the cases in the United States and elsewhere around the world, and we need to continue to keep these border controls in place,” he added.Travel restrictions do not apply to air, freight rail, or sea travel between both countries. From schools to the economy, and now our democracy, the coronavirus is uprooting nearly all aspects of American’s lives. Several states have postponed elections as a health precaution, and voting advocates are calling on government leaders to prepare for voting system adjustments in case the COVID-19 crisis continues into the November general election. “For a lot of our registrars and election officials, they have been through some processes where they’re planning for emergencies. COVID-19 is adding a whole new layer,” said Kathay Feng. Feng is the executive director of California Common Cause, a non-partisan organization dedicated to making voting more accessible. With 30 states in the network, their election protection hotline is being flooded with calls. “State by state, one of the biggest questions is going to be, what are my alternatives? If I can’t get to my polling place, how can I get my ballot in?” said Feng. The organization is calling on Los Angeles County to send all registered voters a Vote-By-Mail ballot in the November General Election. And a newly proposed bill by Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden (D) would give all Americans the right to vote by mail if 25 percent of states declared an emergency related to the coronavirus. If passed, the measure would provide 0 million to fund the vote-by-mail efforts. However, making that change quickly won’t be easy. “You’ve got to print all the ballots, assemble them, make sure the right ballots are going to right people, and mail millions of ballots to people in Los Angeles alone,” said Feng. Carl Luna, a political science professor at San Diego Mesa College, says it’s an issue Congress must address. “Congress should probably have a national response to provide a big pot of money to every state, to be able to adjust their voting systems to deal with the pandemic, the way we’re doing it for economics and other issues,” said Luna. And for the change to be successful, Luna says states would have to do an aggressive campaign to ensure everyone not only gets a ballot but is reminded to send it back in. “Elections have to happen. Congress could postpone the November election, but by January 20, the president, under the Constitution, isout of office, and you need to have a replacement in place,” said Luna. He says if the November general election is postponed, it would be the first time in American history. “If we can do it during the Civil War, we can do it now, we just need the resolve and funding to do it,” said Luna.
