Donald Trump's lawyers want the Washington court fight over Trump's accounting records to slow down.A recent congressional subpoena for the records could reveal financial information about Trump to Democrats in Congress, but the President says a federal judge is moving too quickly. On Monday, private attorneys representing Trump and his companies disagreed with a federal judge's decision to hold a comprehensive court hearing about the subpoena on Tuesday in Washington, according to court filings. The President's attorneys say they are not being given a fair shot in court, and have asked the judge to either narrow the topics covered in the hearing Tuesday or cancel the hearing outright."Because the hearing is tomorrow, the court's consolidation will force plaintiffs to try their case on only four days' notice, with no discovery, with little opportunity to assemble evidence, before Defendants have filed a single pleading, with no idea which facts are actually in dispute, and without a round of briefing focused on the merits," the President's legal team wrote.Congress' attorneys, however, said they are ready for the case to proceed as scheduled on Tuesday and do not want Tuesday's hearing to be canceled. The scheduled court hearing would be the first in a growing set of legal disputes between the Democratic-led House of Representatives and those it has subpoena for Trump's financial records. So far, Trump has sued the accounting firm Mazars USA as well as two banks, Deutsche Bank and Capitol One, to stop them from fulfilling House subpoenas. Separately, the Treasury Department has pushed back against Congress' request for Trump's tax returns held by the IRS.The accounting firm and banks haven't taken sides in the cases. Instead, the House general counsel is arguing opposite Trump to Judge Amit Mehta. In this case, the Democratic-controlled House Oversight Committee initially subpoenaed Mazars for all financial statements, communications and other documents related to Trump, a handful of his companies and his foundation from 2011 through 2018.Mazars became a target in the House investigation after former Trump personal attorney Michael Cohen accused Trump of fudging his wealth in an unsuccessful attempt to buy the Buffalo Bills football team and reduce his real estate tax burden. The committee sought the accounting firm's information on Trump by April 29.After Trump sued, Mehta temporarily halted the subpoena and was going to consider further questions about keeping the documents from Congress as the case progressed. But last Tuesday, Mehta said he was ready to hear the full arguments about the case in court, meaning his decision could come far earlier than previously expected. The House has argued that it has the authority to subpoena Trump's information, and says it is investigating potential constitutional, conflict of interest and ethical questions related to Trump's financial holdings. "The Committee is determining what legislation is required to ensure full public confidence in the officials charged with executing the nation's laws," the House wrote in a filing earlier this month.Trump's attorneys, conversely, say the President is being targeted by the Democrats for political reasons--that the subpoena doesn't have a legislative purpose. They also argue Trump will be harmed if his private information from his accountant is exposed.Generally, federal courts have refrained from limiting Congress' abilities. The House Financial Services and Intelligence committees are also investigating the President's finances and have delivered subpoenas to Deutsche Bank, Capitol One and other major banks.Trump, his businesses, and three of his children -- Ivanka, Donald Jr. and Eric -- are suing in New York federal court to stop the subpoenas to those banks and won't be heard by a judge until next week. 3864

CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. — A historic section of Route 66 runs through western New Mexico’s Cibola County. That’s been this county’s claim to fame for nearly a century. However, over the past year, Cibola has become known for something else. In January, County Sheriff Tony Mace came up with the idea to make Cibola County a "Second Amendment Sanctuary." The people in Cibola voted on the resolution and it passed. In a "Second Amendment Sanctuary" county, law enforcement, essentially, makes a proclamation to refuse to enforce and dedicate resources to newly passed gun control legislation. Legislation like universal background checks that were enacted this year in New Mexico. “As the sheriff I can choose not to enforce that law,” Mace says. “It's called discretion.”It is discretion that is controversial. New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has called Mace a "rouge sheriff." She said in a tweet from March that Mace doesn’t “care who wants a gun, whether it is a dangerous criminal, a terrorist, someone in crisis.”Her strong criticism has received national attention, yet it doesn’t seem to be stopping Mace. “You know, there's enough gun laws on the books currently to be able to do what we need to do in law enforcement to protect people, and so to be enacting more laws ... that infringes on those rights,” Mace said. “Really becomes an issue.”Since Cibola passed its Second Amendment sanctuary resolution, Mace has helped 29 of the other 32 counties in the state follow suit. Beyond New Mexico, over the past 10 months, more than 150 other counties in at least 15 states have also become Second Amendment sanctuary counties. Most of those counties are in the central part of the country. However, there is at least one Second Amendment sanctuary county in Florida, a handful in California and more than a dozen in Illinois. An additional five states have implemented similar resolutions under a different name. Many who voted for these Second Amendment sanctuary resolutions are from rural communities, like Cibola.“We’re not out just gun slinging, being crazy,” said Diane Rowe, a resident of New Mexico. “We just want to be able to keep our families safe and protect ourselves.”“I have had people call and leave crazy messages on my phone, threatening me from other states to say, 'how can you not care?' I do care," Mace explains. "I mean, it's horrible when I turn on the news and I see a shooting in an inner city where I see people having to bury a loved one. It's sad but we need to quit attacking the tool and probably take a different approach and focus more on the criminal element and focus more on mental health issues. Let's try going down that road for once instead.” So far, Second Amendment sanctuary resolutions haven’t been challenged in the courts. However, Mace says, under the current political climate, that could change any day. 2880

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Instead of making a giant jack o'lantern or a massive pie that could feed the whole town, a farmer in Tennessee took his 910-pound pumpkin out for a spin in his pond. It's been Justin Ownby's dream to grow a giant pumpkin. And for the past four years, he has been trying to reach his goal of growing a 1,000 pound pumpkin, his wife, Christin, told CNN.This year the farmer from Cleveland, Tennessee, had an extra special seed to plant in May - a seed from last year's record-breaking pumpkin grown in Tennessee that weighed more than 1,700 pounds, according to Christin."He was out there daily watering it, covering it during the heat of the day and making sure the beetles didn't get to it," she said. When it was done growing, the pumpkin was hauled onto a trailer. With the help of a neighbor, who had access to a large scale, it was weighed."It's the biggest we ever grew," she said. "The largest before was 220 pounds."Justin hollowed out the pumpkin to harvest the seeds and then decided to have some fun with the kids, Christin said. On Monday night, he plunged the pumpkin in the pond on the family's property, climbed inside and with an oar in hand he started paddling around. Christin recorded his adventure and posted it on Facebook. At one point, Justin even tried standing up in the pumpkin before tipping over into the water. 1368
