ATHENS, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Senior Chinese legislator Chen Zhili on Saturday called for the promotion of gender equality through education.Since the Fourth World Conference on Women, society has become more aware that the empowerment of women and the improvement of their status is critical to economic, political and social development, Chen said during a keynote speech at the UNESCO forum on gender equality in Athens.Chen, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said China has witnessed great improvement in the status of women in recent years.With the implementation of the Women Protection Law as well as other national policies on gender equality, the rights of Chinese women in the area of education, work and politics are guaranteed, Chen said.Chen also spoke highly of the efforts made by UNESCO to promote sustainable development through gender equality.During her speech, Chen made several proposals to promote gender equality. The proposals included creating a stronger voice for gender equality that should be heard by all people, especially male decision makers, she said. BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government on Thursday issued the full text of Premier Wen Jiabao's explanation on a proposal that will play a crucial role in shaping the country's development over the next five years.The Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee's Proposal on Formulating the Twelfth Five-year Program (2011-2015) on National Economic and Social Development was adopted at the Fifth Plenum of the 17th CPC Central Committee that ended Oct. 18.Wen's explanation focused on five parts, including China's social and economic development over the past five years, the guiding principle and goals for development in next five years, major tasks in economic development, major tasks in improving social undertakings and people's livelihoods, and major tasks in deepening reform and opening-up.Wen made the explanation on Oct. 15 when the CPC Central Committee session began.The proposal stipulated scientific development as the theme of the 12th Five-year Program, said Wen, noting this is also the first time for a five-year program to include scientific development as its theme.The Scientific Outlook on Development shall be implemented in all sectors of reform and opening-up and the modernization drive, he said.According to Wen, the State Council will make the draft of the 12th Five-year Program based on the proposal. The draft will be submitted to the National People's Congress session next March for deliberation and approval.

NEW YORK, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday urged all parties to seize "new opportunities" to find a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi made the remarks in a meeting on Iran with his counterparts from the United States, Russia, Britain, France and Germany in New York."At present, there are new opportunities in advancing the diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear issue," Yang said."All parties should use the positive elements in the current circumstances to further enhance diplomatic efforts so as to push the Iranian nuclear issue back to the track of dialogue."Yang said that China will continue to play a "constructive role " in the international community's effort to find "a comprehensive, lasting and fair" solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.A statement issued after the foreign ministers' meeting called for an "early negotiated solution" to the Iranian nuclear issue.The foreign ministers are "ready to engage with Iran," the statement said.The six-nation ministerial meeting on Iran was held on the sidelines of a UN high-level meeting on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
