Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell announced Monday that he is running for president, telling "Late Show" host Stephen Colbert that he believes the United States is in "quicksand" where Americans feel they are "running in place and it is not adding up to anything."Swalwell has been contemplating a run for months. The California Democrat has made several trips to early nominating states like Iowa and New Hampshire, telling reporters that he sees a space for a candidate like himself in the race and hinted earlier this month that he was "close to making a decision.""None of that is going to change until we get a leader who is willing to go big on the issues we take on, be bold in the solutions we offer and do good in the ways that we govern. I am ready to solve these problems. I am running for president of the United States," he told Colbert.Swalwell, who also 877

Despite it being an "off year" for federal elections, a grass roots effort to register new voters netted 400,000 citizens to register to vote last week. According to organizers of the effort, last Tuesday's effort shattered a record for it being an off year by nearly three times. The drive included more than 4,000 groups nationwide, which used partners such as Facebook, the United Way and the League of Women Voters to assist. Tom Hanks, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leann Rimes, Michelle Obama and Newt Gingrich were among those who encouraged people to register vote."We are encouraged by the level of engagement this local election year," said Lindsay Torrico, United Way Senior Director of Policy and Advocacy and National Voter Registration Day Steering Committee member. "We are hopeful that this year's success is a preview of what's to come in 2020."Although federal elections will not be held this year -- except in three congressional districts due to mid-term vacancies -- many areas will hold local, county and state elections next month. If you're not yet registered to vote, there is still time to register before next month's elections. CLEVELAND, Ohio —Julianne Moore says she doesn't feel like a hero. She was only following what her parents taught her when she saved her 6-year-old brother from the clutches of a possible kidnapper.Julianne said that a man tried to grab her brother in the early evening hours May 23 while they were playing in the front yard of the their Cleveland home. Julianne said the man grabbed her brother's arm, and she managed to her pull her brother away from him.“He grabbed him like this, so I just grabbed him and started carrying him into the backyard,” Julianne said. The 11-year-old girl immediately alerted her father, Joshua Moore, who ran down the street and confronted the suspect."He was about five houses down, and I said, 'Hey, did you touch my kids?' He just threw his arms at me and just continued walking,” Moore said. "My daughter and I gave a full description to police, and just 10 minutes later they had him in custody. They did a great job."Police arrested 33-year-old Pedro Luyando of Cleveland half a mile from the scene. He is charged with abduction.Moore said he taught his children to use the buddy system when playing in the front yard and is proud of how his daughter took action.“She’s my hero. She saved my son," Moore said. "I told everyone, I truly believe my son wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for her.” 1347
