(KGTV) - A disturbing new trend at the US-Mexico border has several federal agencies teaming up, as teenagers are being arrested trying to smuggle Fentanyl into the country."Narcotics smuggling is not a new thing," says Customs and Border Protection Director of Field Operations Anne Marcicich. "But this is."In 2017, agents at the border caught 84 teens trying to smuggle narcotics. But none of them had Fentanyl. Already in 2018, they've made 41 arrests, including 6 for the dangerous drug. That includes five in the past week.Customs and Border Patrol believes enhanced security and screening has led drug dealers and cartel to target teens. They strap packages of the drug to their stomach or backs and walk across the border.In many cases, the teens are US citizens who live with family in Mexico and cross the border every day to go to school."These juveniles, they're being recruited in schools, on public transportation, while they're waiting in line to cross the border, by their families, and also on social media," says Special Agent David Shaw, with Department of Homeland Security Investigations. "They're offered quick money and even electronics for continued success."Now, CBP, Homeland Security, the San Diego District Attorney's office and the US Attorney's office are teaming up to let kids know how dangerous the drug can be, and the impact an arrest can have on their lives."They're being told nothing will happen to them because they're juveniles," says District Attorney Lisa Weinreb. "Nothing could be further from the truth,"Weinreb says the DA will prosecute all kids caught smuggling Fentanyl. And while they may not go to prison, they will be put through the juvenile justice system, which can include any number of rehabilitative steps. The arrest will also stay on their record and keep them from jobs or military service.In addition to the legal dangers, the physical danger can be worse. Fentanyl is a highly potent narcotic. Just a small amount, about the same as 30 grains of sand, is enough to cause a fatal overdose if ingested. Federal agents that confiscate and handle the drugs have to wear protective clothing and masks to make sure they're not exposed.Maricich says the kids don't realize they're putting their lives, and the lives of others, at risk when they strap a bag to their body. The agencies have started adding Fentanyl into their presentations they give at high schools around San Diego. They've been to 61 schools since 2009, but early presentations focused on marijuana and methamphetamine. Now they'll focus on Fentanyl."The message is clear," says Weinreb. SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Authorities are investigating a shooting involving U.S. Customs and Border Protection near the San Ysidro Port of Entry Monday night. The San Diego Police Department told 10News the suspect is a 23-year-old man in a white pickup truck who was trying to drive into the United States from Mexico.Police say he had been directed to a secondary screening area but failed to stop for an inspection and began firing at border agents. The man attempted to drive away, but authorities shot back. SDPD said at least seven CBP officers fired their weapons, killing the driver.According to a witness who was driving to the border from National City, police could be heard telling someone to pull over. The witness added that a police helicopter could also be seen in the area. San Diego Police say they're helping with the shooting investigation, which originally involved Border Patrol and CBP. Marco Sotomayor, Secretary of Public Security in Tijuana, tweeted that CBP closed all lanes of the port during the incident, but quickly reopened them. 1075

SARASOTA Co., Fla. — A brawl between two moms at a school bus stop landed both in the hospital.One of those mothers was Tiffani Cruz. She was recently released from the hospital.“It was self-defense over an incident that made no sense," she said.While North Port Police say it started over an argument about parenting, Cruz claims she and the other mother have had issues before. She says two weeks ago, she confronted that mom for yelling at another child at the bus stop. But Tuesday morning, their verbal arguments went too far.“My heart was racing!” said Eithan Cruz, who is of no relation to Tiffani Cruz. The child and his brother, Bairon Velazquez, witnessed the fight from the back window of their school bus.“Her face was bleeding and stuff,” Eithan said.“I looked away," Bairon said..Cruz admits she hit the other mom with her mug. Police have not identified the other woman. “I went to run and that’s when she picked up the glass, ran at me and stabbed me twice in my arm, once at my wrist and in back of my shoulder," Cruz said.Both parents ended up in the hospital, but paramedics airlifted the other woman to the hospital with a serious cut to her throat.“She got this close to my face nudged me with her nose and when she nudged me with her nose— it was her fist going up so my fist was going up," Cruz said when asked why she felt she acted in self-defense.Sarasota County Schools is offering counselors after several dozen elementary-aged students witnessed the violent fight.“I regret the whole incident, there’s no reason it should have happened. SANTA ANA (CNS) - Two more people in Orange County have tested positive locally for the novel coronavirus, health officials said today, but federal test results are still pending to confirm the diagnoses.According to the Orange County Health Care Agency, the cases are a man in his 60s and a woman in her 30s who had recently traveled to countries with widespread outbreaks of what is officially known as COVID-19. The pair tested positive in Orange County, but test results were sent to the U.S.Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to confirm the results. "The more you look for something, the more likely you are to find it," said Dr. Nichole Quick, the county's health officer. "Now that our Public Health Laboratory is able to perform COVID-19 testing, we expect to see more cases here in Orange County. Our residents should take everyday precautions to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses like covering your coughs and sneezes, avoiding touching your face, and washing your hands frequently."Another person in the county who contracted the virus earlier this year has fully recovered.The news comes as organizers of the second biggest annual convention in Anaheim announced the postponement of the event due to concerns over the virus. (KGTV) - Customs and Border Protection officials tweeted thermal camera video Friday of men climbing the U.S.-Mexico border fence and damaging the concertina wire.The video was recorded by U.S. Border Patrol cameras placed near Border Field State Park in Imperial Beach, opposite from where migrants have been gathering as more members of the Central American caravan arrive in Tijuana.There was no word on whether the incident captured on video led to an arrest.The Department of Defense confirmed with 10News that military troops are at Ream Field in Imperial Beach to assist in Border enforcement. The Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force members here, consist of 400 Marines out of Camp Pendelton, as well as an Army Military Police Battalion. The Marines will be unarmed, focusing primarily on logistical support. The Army Police will help with security.“All seeking to enter the U.S. are urged to do so at one of more than 320 official U.S. Ports of Entry,” Customs and Border Protection officials wrote in the tweet.  1069
