SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two San Diego County schools will receive grant funding from the Jimmie Johnson Foundation, it was announced Friday.The foundation, launched in 2006 by NASCAR driver and El Cajon-native Jimmie Johnson and his wife, Chandra Johnson, plans to award 8,000 in grants to seven public schools in the Johnsons' home states of California and Oklahoma and where they currently live in North Carolina.San Diego's Knox Middle School will receive ,206.37 to improve the school's library and WD Hall Elementary School in El Cajon will receive ,096.71 to add a multi-lingual, digital marquee to the school's campus. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 47-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a woman and threatening to use a Taser on her was arrested Saturday. Police say Phillip Terrell McLeod, 47, was arrested around 4:30 p.m. Saturday on the 100 block of Euclid Avenue. According to police, McLeod drove alongside a 27-year-old woman on the 3900 block of Delta Street Thursday morning. RELATED: San Diego Police release sketch of sex assault suspect who threatened to use Taser on victimMcLeod then reportedly got out of the truck, threatening to use a Taser on the woman if she didn’t comply. Police say he then forced the woman into his truck and drove to an area near 39th Street and Broadway where he sexually assaulted her. McLeod then drove to an area near 32nd Street and National Avenue and let the woman go after she pleaded with him. McLeod was booked into jail on charges including kidnapping, sexual assault and resisting arrest. McLeod’s arraignment is scheduled January 3. 976

SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- Unemployment numbers continue to decrease across San Diego County from a high of 25% in May, a report released Thursday from the San Diego Association of Governments found.The region's unemployment rate is estimated to be 15.9%, the SANDAG report found, 1.8% lower than the previous week and 9.1% lower than this time last month.According to the report, the number of unemployed people in the county began to drop when Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the state was moving into Stage 2 of his four-stage reopening roadmap on May 8. The report also credits local politicians for getting people back to work."Elected officials in the San Diego region have worked aggressively to help businesses reopen as quickly as possible, which contributed to approximately 150,000 workers returning to work in the past month," a summary of the report said. "However, there are still roughly 270,000 unemployed people in the region (down from 425,000 in early May)."San Diego County moved into Phase 3 of reopening in early June, which allowed in-store retail, restaurants, manufacturing facilities, hair salons and barbershops, bars, zoos, movie theaters and hotels to resume operations with appropriate social-distancing rules in place. On June 19, nail and facial salons and tattoo and massage establishments were allowed to reopen.The unemployment rate of 15.9% in the region is still 50% higher than it was at the peak of the Great Recession -- 10.8% in 2009 -- which signals that there is still a long way to go to return to the unemployment levels recorded in March 2020, before the start of the public health crisis.The most affected ZIP Codes remain those in the southern and central part of the region. The five ZIP Codes still experiencing the highest unemployment rates are Golden Hill, College Area, City Heights, San Ysidro and Logan Heights. These areas have an average unemployment rate around 20%.The five ZIP Codes with lowest unemployment rates are Del Mar, Carmel Valley, Rancho Santa Fe, Chula Vista NE and Rancho Bernardo W. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A bizarre series of events led to a woman visiting San Diego with her family, getting attacked in a Hyatt Hotel lobby by a stranger running from a crash scene. Construction workers tell 10News they witnessed a man drive recklessly through a Mission Bay construction zone around 5 a.m., almost striking vehicles.The workers say they jumped in their truck and followed the driver down Quivira Road hoping to get his license plate information.Instead, they say the driver made a U-turn and crashed into their truck and a parked car. The driver’s car immediately burst into flames, but he wasn’t done just yet.According to the construction workers, the man then ran from the scene toward the Hyatt Hotel in Mission Bay.They say they chased him on foot, and held him down in the hotel lobby, waiting for police to arrive.Witnesses tell 10News that’s when the man got away and attacked a woman who was in the lobby checking out of the hotel.The woman’s husband told 10News the man tackled her then put her in the choke hold. The victim’s mother said she believes the suspect was trying to kill her daughter.The victim, her husband and parents were visiting San Diego from Minnesota. They were scheduled to continue their vacation by flying out to Hawaii this morning.They have to reschedule the trip because the victim was taken to the hospital.Police arrested the suspect. They say his motive is unclear.Investigators have not yet determined if the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash. 1547

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A boy found wandering in the parking lot of a Rolando church Monday was reunited with his mother.The pastor of the Fellowship of Love Divine church found the boy around 2:30 p.m. in the parking lot on Aragon Dr., near the Kroc Center.San Diego Police got a call about 30 minutes later from a mother reporting her child missing from a home about a block away."He was clean. Had on a pair of Pampers, and a pair of socks. And he stuffed had a toy car and he seemed to be really happy, you know," said Pastor James Dawson.The boy was returned to his mother at their apartment nearby. There's no word on why he was on his own. 659
