(CNN) - Most parents feel pretty safe letting their children watch YouTube Kids, the child-friendly version of the video platform.But disturbing videos recently found by some moms show the social media site may not be safe for kids at all.A Florida mother said she has found clips on YouTube and YouTube Kids that gave children instructions on how to kill themselves.Free Hess said the first time she saw such a video was back in July when another mom alerted her to it after she and her son were watching cartoon videos on YouTube Kids. Spliced in the middle of one of the videos was footage of a man in sunglasses telling children how to slit their wrists.Hess, a pediatrician, put out a call to action to different groups to report the video to get it removed from the site. Hess said it took YouTube Kids a week to pull it down.What she saw shocked herBut this month she saw the video again, this time on YouTube. Once again, after the video was flagged by her and others, it took a couple of days for YouTube to pull it, said Hess, who has been writing about the issue on her parenting blog."It makes me angry and sad and frustrated," Hess told CNN. "I'm a pediatrician, and I'm seeing more and more kids coming in with self harm and suicide attempts. I don't doubt that social media and things such as this is contributing."But that's not all she said she found. When Hess went to YouTube Kids and started exploring the site, what she saw there shocked her. She said she found videos glorifying not only suicide but sexual exploitation and abuse, human trafficking, gun violence and domestic violence. One video, inspired by the popular "Minecraft" video game, even depicted a school shooting."There were just so many that I had to stop recording," she said.Hess wants YouTube to do a better job of screening videos intended for YouTube Kids. She said she understands that Google (which owns YouTube) is a business and "they might not have the exact goals that I have, but I do want them to respond better when people report offensive videos, and I want offensive things taken down immediately when reported."In response to Hess' allegations, YouTube said in a statement that it works to make the videos on YouTube Kids family-friendly and takes feedback seriously."We appreciate people drawing problematic content to our attention, and make it possible for anyone to flag a video," the statement said. "Flagged videos are manually reviewed 24/7 and any videos that don't belong in the app are removed."We've also been investing in new controls for parents including the ability to hand pick videos and channels in the app. We are making constant improvements to our systems and recognize there's more work to do."She says parents need to step upHess did say that YouTube is faster about pulling questionable videos from YouTube Kids than from regular YouTube. But she thinks by the time someone reports something, it could have already caused harm."Once someone reports it, it's too late because a kid has already seen it," she said.Hess also wants parents to be more aware of what their children are watching on YouTube and YouTube Kids, and for parents to do a better job in general of keeping up with technology."There is this disconnect between what kids know about technology and what their parents know because the parents didn't grow up with it," she said. "The kids are the digital natives and the parents are digital immigrants."Most importantly, she says, parents need to team up with each other to combat this problem."We need to fix this," she said, "and we all need to fix this together." 3617

(KGTV) - Families who are caught illegally entering the U.S. will likely be broken up under a new border security policy that is now in effect, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.The newspaper, citing a Department of Homeland Security official, reported a new Trump administration policy would separate parents and children in the event a family is detained for crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally.In a news conference Monday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the separation is due to the legal process, adding that citizens in the U.S. are also separated from their families when they're arrested.According to the report, families that are detained for illegal crossings have typically been kept together in the past. (KGTV) — A dog and tortoise had to be rescued from a Fontana property after becoming stuck in a hole together.The odd scene played out Wednesday, after San Bernardino County firefighters responded to a report of a man and dog falling into a hole. When responders arrived, the man was out of the hole but the dog, a German Shepard named Taylor, was still trapped, according to SBFD.Taylor had brought a blanket into the tunnel, dug by 70-pound tortoise named Godzilla. The blanket had wedged Taylor and Godzilla together and prevented them from getting free, firefighters say.Firefighters worked to untangle the two animals, digging away dirt from around the tunnel and coaxing Godzilla out with some lettuce until the two were free.Both animals belong to the property owner where the tunnel started, SBFD says. (KGTV) -- A class-action lawsuit has been filed in Maricopa County against Dr. Mario Almanza, a doctor who performs weight loss surgeries in Tijuana.There are more than 20 people and businesses named in the lawsuit. It also includes an Arizona woman believed to have been recruited for doctors in Mexico. It alleges fraud and negligent misrepresentation.Jessica Ballandby is a plaintiff in the class action lawsuit. She also filed her own lawsuit against Dr. Almanza and his alleged recruiter, Sandy Brimhall.Ballandby, a mother of two, got weight loss surgery with Dr. Almanza back in Tijuana back in March 2014. She said she experienced problems almost immediately.“I woke up from surgery and was feeling the most pain I’d ever felt in my life,” Ballandby said. “You could literally take my hoodie and ring it out and blood was dripping from it.”Ballandby blames Dr. Almanza, who claims to be the leading weight loss surgeon south of the border. After her surgery, she thought the worst.“I’m going to die over here. I’m never going to see my family again,” Ballandby remembers thinking.She admits she did not think twice about surgery in Mexico.“I was thinking long-term effects of being able to support my two kids,” Ballandby said.It is expensive in the United States and the gastric sleeve procedure came highly recommended and referred by Brimhall. In a 2015 interview, Brimhall said she collected 0 for people she sent to surgeons in Tijuana. Brimhall was with Ballandby in Mexico and admitted there were issues with her surgery.“When she crossed the border, she was having significant problems so she went to another bariatric center in Scottsdale and they told her he had nicked her intestines,” Brimhall said.In the court documents, it alleges that Brimhall used “high-pressure sales tactics” on people like Ballandby looking to lose weight and recommended doctors like Almanza.The class-action lawsuit also named Fill Centers USA and claimed Almanza was working with the business. The attorney representing Ballandby said Fill Centers USA would arrange trips to Mexico and aftercare in the U.S. for patients who received the Lap-Band surgery.“It would be a quick in and out. The surgeries would be done by doctors who are qualified and competent and that’s not what happened,” said Ballandby’s attorney, Robert Gregory.A trip to the emergency room delivered devastating news to Ballandby.“Your spleen’s been cut,” she said doctors told her. “He’s like, you’re bleeding internally.”Ballandby said she is now 102 pounds and has trouble keeping on weight. She also lost hundreds of thousands of dollars. She said none of it was covered by insurance because she chose to have surgery in Mexico.Brimhall was a school principal in Arizona. A records request showed she used her district email to recruit for surgeons across the border. Emails showed Brimhall recruited hundreds of people, escorted them to Mexico, used district resources to transmit HIPAA protected medical documents and started a business, making professional referrals allegedly based on her own experience having weight loss surgery in Mexico.Team 10 has confirmed four Americans died after having weight loss surgery with Dr. Almanza. In January 2016 during an interview with Team 10, he said he had performed more than 14,000 surgeries. Currently, his website now says over 16,000 surgeries have been performed.Dr. Almanza told Team 10 in 2016, the only patients he knew who passed away after surgery were the ones featured in Team 10 stories. He believes his unhappy patients were bribed by a disgruntled employee who wants to ruin his reputation.Ballandby compared Dr. Almanza’s operation to a “pig farm.”“That’s what he’s treating human beings over there like," she said.
