TAIPEI, April 26 (Xinhua) -- Luo Qingquan, Communist Party of China (CPC) chief in central China's Hubei Province, left Taiwan Monday with a one-thousand-strong delegation after an eight-day visit to the island, expressing confidence in the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations."The visit was very smooth and fruitful... I'm expecting Hubei and Taiwan to carry out more exchanges and boost cooperation," Luo said as he departed the island.Luo's delegation arrived here on April 19 for a Hubei-Taiwan cultural festival filled with exhibitions, forums and performances featuring Hubei culture.Luo said the two regions reached a consensus on exchange and cooperation in economic, scientific, technological and cultural fields.He noted Taiwan's advanced farm-products processing technology could be well applied in Hubei, a province rich in agriculture.During the trip, the delegation also visited medium- and small-sized companies, farm and schools in Taipei, Taichung, Yunlin and Hsinchu.The Hubei-Taiwan festival has been held in Hubei's capital Wuhan six times since 2004. It was the first time the event was held on the island.The Chinese mainland and Taiwan have been recently intensifying their exchanges, especially high-level visits to the island by mainland delegations, which is seen as a sign of increasingly solid relations.Earlier this month, a municipal government delegation of about 260 people headed by Shanghai mayor Han Zheng visited the island to promote the upcoming Shanghai World Expo.During the trip, several Shanghai companies and Taiwanese counterparts signed 28 agreements on long-term exchanges and short-term purchases, along with agreements on investments in finance, chemical materials, steel, tourism, intellectual property rights and farm products, among others.

HAIKOU, April 25 (Xinhua) -- China's fishery administration said on Sunday it had started regular patrols of the South China Sea, sending two vessels to take over from two others currently escorting Chinese fishing boats in the area."China Yuzheng 301 and 302 take over from China Yuzheng 311 and 202, which have been patrolling the sea area of Nansha Islands since April 1," said Wu Zhuang, director of Administration of Fishery and Fishing Harbor Supervision for South China Sea under the Ministry of Agriculture.He said the patrol ships were sent to escort Chinese fishing boats in the South China Sea and reinforce China's fishing rights of the waters around Nansha Islands.The two ships set sail from Sanya, a coastal city in China's Southernmost Island Province of Hainan, on Sunday.China's patrol vessels escort the country's fishing boats and help treat fishermen who fall ill, Wu said. HONG KONG, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region held Friday a grand funeral ceremony to say goodbye to well-known businessman Tsui Tsin-tong, who was also a noted social activist, philanthropist and a close friend to the Communist Party of China.Tsui was also a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee before he died of an illness on April 2 this year in the Chinese capital of Beijing at the age of 69.Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC, the country's top advisory body, and Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping had both sent messages of condolences to Tsui's family after Tsui's death.In their messages of condolences, Jia and Xi praised Tsui for his great contributions to Hong Kong's stable transition, smooth handover from Britain to China and Hong Kong's lasting prosperity, as well as Tsui's contributions to Chinese mainland's reform-and- opening-up drive and modernization.Tsui's funeral ceremony was held at Hong Kong's landmark Convention and Exhibition Center in the day. BEIJING, May 27 (Xinhua) -- China and India have agreed to enhance political, economic ties and bolster people-to-people contact during a meeting between Indian President Pratibha Patil and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao here on Thursday.It is the Indian president's first official visit to China and the first visit to China by an Indian head of state in the last decade.In the meeting Wen proposed the two states treat bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term point of view, enhance high-level communication and bolster cooperation, in a bid to benefit the two peoples and the world."Practicing mutual respect conforms with the fundamental interests of the two states and peoples and will spark new hope for human beings," Wen Jiabao said in the meeting.Patil said India and China share broad common interests in the bilateral and multilateral fields.She pledged to boost high-level contact, cement economic and trade ties, promote two-way investment and people-to-people contact, and strengthen coordination on major international affairs with China.In her meeting with Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo, Patil said all the parties of India support the development of relations with China.Wu, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, said to promote peaceful co-existence and common development of the two countries meets the fundamental interests of both sides, and complies with the mainstream trend of peace and development in Asia and the world."China and India do not pose as threat to each other and their common interests far outweigh differences," he added.Wu said he hopes the two sides understand and respect each other's core interests and major concerns, properly handle their differences, and seek common development and a win-win situation."A good China-India relationship makes both winners while a confrontational one makes both losers," he added.Patil said the two countries had conducted sound cooperation not only in bilateral field but also under multilateral frameworks including BRIC and G20.The cooperation between India and China in the Copenhagen climate change summit served as a good example of bilateral cooperation in global affairs, she added.Patil arrived here Wednesday for the week-long state visit.

CANBERRA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Visiting General Guo Boxiong, vice-chairman of China's Central Military Commission, and Australian Minister for Defense John Faulkner have vowed to strengthen exchanges between the armed forces of China and Australia.China and Australia shared common interests and desire in ensuring the peace, stability and development of the Asia-Pacific region, said a joint statement released by Guo and Faulkner Friday.The two sides hailed the development of their military-to-military relationship in recent years and said positive outcomes had been achieved through senior visits and exchanges in education, training and technical areas.Both sides agreed that strengthening open dialogue on defense and security issues between Australia and China was conducive to promoting bilateral relations.The statement said China and Australia were both pleased with the outcomes of the current visit and the opportunity it provided to further strengthen bilateral ties and military exchanges.The Sino-Australia defense relationship was an important part of bilateral ties and both sides would work concertedly to sustain sound and stable development in this regard, it said.Both countries should respect and take into full consideration each other's core interests and major concerns, and develop ties on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, the statement said.
