SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The trial of the Navy veteran accused of stabbing his wife, then dumping her body into the San Diego Bay, got underway today at San Diego Superior Court. Matthew Sullivan sat quietly next to his lawyers, nearly four years after the gruesome discovery of his wife, 32-year-old Elizabeth Sullivan. "She said, 'Hold on a sec.' And then she said 'I got to go,' quietly, and I didn't hear from her anymore," Calandra Harris said while wiping her tears. Harris described herself as Elizabeth's best friend. The two met while working together at Hampton University in Virginia. She said the last conversation she ever had with Elizabeth was on the day before she went missing in October 2014. Despite living on opposite coasts, Harris said she and Elizabeth talked every day. Harris said Elizabeth often consulted her about her tumultuous marriage with her husband. Both husband and wife filed domestic violence charges against each other, and the couple slept in separate rooms in the same Liberty Station home. So when Elizabeth went missing, Harris said she was worried, especially when she saw Sullivan's new Facebook post. "I noticed that he posted that he was in a relationship with Kay Taylor," Harris testified. "And when did you see that?" Deputy District Attorney Jill Lindberg asked. "Less than 30 days after and Liz was missing," Harris said. In October 2016, on the same day that Matthew was moving to Maryland with his new girlfriend and children, Elizabeth's decomposed body was discovered floating in the San Diego Bay. At this time, Matthew was not a suspect. But after months of investigating, police found blood underneath the carpet, and a knife hidden in the insulation of the Liberty Station home the couple once shared. "They can see blood in some of the crevices, down where the blade comes out of the handle and the bolts on the side," Lindberg said while displaying the knife to the jury. "They checked it, and they found Elizabeth's DNA and blood. A tiny bit of the defendant's, mostly the victims."The defense team agreed that the blood was Elizabeth's. But they said the mother of two, who had infidelity issues and abused drugs and alcohol, hurt herself. "Elizabeth had broken a mirror," Defense Attorney Marcus DeBose said. "Taking a large shard of glass out of the mirror, she inflicted a deep wound. She was bleeding profusely all over the third-floor bedroom."Both the prosecution and defense teams will call on additional witnesses starting Monday. 2504

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This week, a massive Mola mola fish stunned whale watchers in San Diego. The fish is a unique sight, appearing to look like a giant fish head with fins. It's also known as the sunfish. Domenic Biagini, owner and captain of Gone Whale Watching San Diego, says they specialize in giving people once in a lifetime encounters. "Whenever I give my opening spiel, I tell them I'll show them anything that moves," said Biagini.RELATED: Thar she blows! Where to whale watch in San Diego — by land or seaOn this trip, the massive Mola mola stole the show.Biagini says while mola is common here, they're usually 2 to 3 feet long in our waters. He believes the one they spotted was 7 to 8 feet. "When we came across this specific one, we were kind of blown away by the sheer magnitude of it," said Biagini.Biagini happened to have divers on his boat that day, who told him mola is one of the prized fish to swim with. And while usually spotted drifting in the water and basking in the sun, researchers recently discovered they're actually strong swimmers.Mola mola can grow as large as 14 feet by 10 feet. 1418

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The number of San Diegans who spend at least 90 minutes on their daily commute grew nearly 15% over the last decade, according to a recent analysis.Apartment List reports as San Diego County's workforce grew 10.8% from 2009 to 2017, "super commuters" (commuting 90 minutes or more one way) grew 14.9%. Overall though, the share of San Diego's workforce who endure a super commute is only 0.1%.The study showed the trend is much worse in other California counties like San Francisco (110.4% growth since 2009) and Los Angeles (up 22.3% since 2009).Other areas of the state located just outside San Francisco also saw large increases, like Contra Costa and Alameda Counties, which saw a 101.8% and 126.5% increases in super commute workforce, respectively.Rural counties were also more likely to endure a long commute, like Mono County, Calif., which saw a 1166.7% increase."Beyond the super commuters who drive from distant exurbs to work in the downtown offices of pricey superstar cities, we also see high rates of super commuting in some counties that are much closer to the urban core," the study said. "This is evidence of the large number of super commuters who rely on public transit. Super commuting is also common in certain pockets of rural America, particularly those with active drilling and mining industries."Extraction and construction jobs were the most likely to have the longest commute times. Education, training, and library; and food preparation positions were the least likely to have the shortest daily commutes. 1561
