Victoria gave birth 16 months later. Edward's birth was the zoo's first successful attempt to birth a southern white rhino via artificial insemination and a critical step toward recovering its distant cousin, the northern white rhino. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It is officially Wildfire Preparedness Week in California and federal, state, and local agencies are working together to ensure a safe wildfire season.California’s wet winter created overgrown vegetation across the state, including in San Diego, and once that starts drying up and dying, things could get dangerous.The message is clear: California wildfires have changed and the public needs to adapt.“Our firefighters have been preparing non-stop for the inevitable fires that will happen this year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Inside an MCAS Miramar courtroom Thursday, the military held a preliminary hearing for a Navy corpsman who's charged in connection with the death of a fellow Navy corpsman, HM3 Michael Vincent De Leon. A corpsman is a type of medic.ABC 10News' cameras were not allowed inside, where accused corpsman HM1 Ryan Dini appeared in his military fatigues alongside his private counsel."A cover-up is what I felt [happened] from the get-go," Jose De Leon told ABC 10News just after the hearing. He has suspected a possible cover-up since his 30-year-old son died on the Twentynine Palms military base last year.At Thursday's hearing, the prosecution argued that HM1 Dini should face additional charges related to negligence. He's already charged in part with dereliction of duty resulting in death and drunk and disorderly conduct. HM1 Dini has 19 years of service with the military.The prosecution stated that HM1 Dini and a handful of others service members including Michael were at a house party on-base where alcohol was flowing, and guns were being dry-fired the night of the death.HM1 Dini's defense denied any wrongdoing."[HM1 Dini] being the most senior individual at this going-away party failed to protect not just Michael but everyone there because they were in danger when these firearms came out," said Jose De Leon. He told us in September, "We know that the firearm was dry-fired at Michael. The firearm was put away and it came out again and according to some statements they were horsing around, and the firearm came out again and that's when Michael was killed."He said that the shooting was first called in as a suicide but ABC 10News then learned from a source with close military ties that the death was being investigated as a homicide.A prosecutor named three other service members in the hearing. Their involvement remains unknown.The prosecution told ABC 10News that in about three weeks a judge will determine whether HM1 Dini's charges will be sustained and whether he'll face additional charges.Naval Criminal Investigative Service wrote to ABC 10News on Thursday that the investigation is still open. 2149

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Marty Coyne snags the same prime spot at Campland on the Bay every Fourth of July weekend.He parks his massive RV right across from the water."Wouldn't trade it in for any other place to stay in the summer," he said Friday. "It's beautiful here, safe here, the grandkids can run free and have a great time."This year - however - the celebration is quite a bit different - due the outbreak of Covid 19.Campland on the Bay, on Mission Bay's north end, is like many hotels along San Diego's coastline. It's not totally booked.Elvin Lai, who owns the Ocean Park Inn in Pacific Beach, said he was booked in the high 60 percents at a time when the hotel is usually full. "It doesn't mean that I won't get last minute bookings but we're used to being sold out for the month of July months in advance, so it's different."On Friday at the campland, the mood was festive, but the activities were limited - the skate park and basketball courts were taped off. There won't be any bands for outdoor entertainment, and indoor dining is disallowed.Campland on the Bay also placed yellow cones on the beach to give people a clear path to the water. It's also requiring all tents to be spaced out by eight feet. Masks are required in public areas, and rangers are carrying around extra.Still, not every visitor was wearing a mask."Everybody doesn't follow it," said Barry Homer, who is staying on the grounds with his wife Cindy. "It'a always a problem everywhere in the world, for lots of reasons."Hotels and Campland are still open to last minute reservations."We anticipate it's going to be be like this no more than today and tomorrow, and then it'll go down to quiet as people go back to their normal lives," said Ahmed Aitlahcen, the campland's general manafger.The Auto Club predicts 107 million residents of the Pacific Coastal states will take trips this summer.
